IT - Best Class Scenario for the 2023 cycle

  Reveal hidden contents

The Texas Longhorns have designs on signing a second straight top five class. If that is to transpire, the Longhorns will have to hit on a number of prospects that make up the initial “Best Class Scenario” for the 2023 cycle.

The Best Class Scenario will be fluid as the Texas targets change, and the prospect rankings change that would alter the trajectory of the best class possibilities.

With that said, here is the initial Best Class Scenario for the 2023 cycle headed into the spring evaluation period.

Quarterback (1)
Arch Manning, QB, New Orleans (La.) Isidore Newman
On3 Consensus ranking: No. 1

Comment: It goes without saying he’s in the best case scenario class. He’s the tip of the spear for the Texas class. Texas is a battle with Alabama, and possibly Georgia. Everyone else is a long shot currently. Official visits will be decisive on the current timeline.

Running back (1-2)
Rueben Owens, RB, El Campo (Texas)
On3 Consensus ranking: No. 25

Comment: A battle with A&M looms, but landing Manning would go a long way to landing Owens. A big first recruiting battle for Tashard Choice.

Wide receiver (3-4)
Jaquaize Pettaway, WR, Houston (Texas) Langham Creek
On3 Consensus ranking: No. 34

Comment: He’s a must-get and certainly a winnable recruitment. Texas in the hunt with LSU, Oklahoma and Texas A&M. An Alabama offer would serve as a recruitment changer. Pettaway is a favorite of Brennan Marion early on.

Johntay Cook, WR, DeSoto (Texas)
On3 Consensus ranking: No. 55

Comment: The same thing goes for Owens as it does Cook. Land Manning and UT is the favorite. Texas also needs to show good QB play on the field this year. This is a Texas vs. Texas A&M battle at the end of the day barring a shift.

Kyle Parker, WR, Lucas (Texas) Lovejoy
On3 Consensus ranking: No. 463

Marion has been all over Parker since he was coaching at Pittsburgh. The offer after arriving at Texas shows how much Marion covets Parker’s skill level. Punt return ability adds to value.

Jaden Greathouse, WR/TE, Austin (Texas) Westlake
On3 Consensus ranking: No. 122

Comment: Fans worry about his position, the staff wants him in the class and views him as an offensive weapon.

Tight end (1-2)
Lafayette Kaiuway, TE, Arlington (Texas) Sam Houston
On3 Consensus ranking: No. 388

Comment: Jeff Banks got a good jump on this recruitment. Kaiuway can play in-line or flexed. Has the ability to become a do-it-all TE.

Offensive line (4)
Jaydon Chatman, OT/IOL, Killeen (Texas) Harker Heights
On3 Consensus ranking: No. 152

Comment: Kyle Flood was Chatman’s first offer and that helps UT’s cause as other national powers have jumped into the fray. Tackle ability adds to Chatman’s value. Texas will battle Oklahoma, Baylor and others through the whistle.

T.J. Shanahan, IOL, Austin (Texas) Westlake
On3 Consensus ranking: No. 97

Comment: Westlake influence on the Florida move-in should help UT’s cause. A push from Alabama or Georgia will make this one tougher.

Harris Sewell, IOL, Odessa (Texas) Permian
On3 Consensus ranking: No. 69

Comment: A national battle looms for the Permian mauler. Landing Manning is probably a prerequisite here. Texas is recruiting from behind, but Kyle Flood will recruit through the whistle.

Defensive line (3)
Zalance Heard, DT/OT, Monroe (La.) Neville
On3 Consensus ranking: No. 104

Comment: Bo Davis is all over the ultra-talented Heard. His upside is on offense but he prefers defense. The big question surrounding his recruitment will be which blue bloods offer on offense vs. defense.

Markis Deal, DL/IOL, Garland (Texas) Naaman Forest
On3 Consensus ranking: No. 88

Comment: It’s an interesting cycle in that so many players whose ceiling is O-line prefer D-line. Texas will have to recruit and allocate room accordingly.

David Hicks, DL, Allen (Texas)
On3 Consensus ranking: No. 5

Comment: Well, we told you it was a best case scenario class. Oklahoma and Texas A&M are ahead of Texas.

Jayden Wayne, DL, Tacoma (Wash.) Lincoln
On3 Consensus ranking: No. 30

Comment: Wayne grew up watching Pete Kwiatkowski produce a stellar defensive product as well as NFL talent.

Ansel Nedore, DL, Round Rock (Texas)
On3 Consensus ranking: NR

Comment: Just scratching the surface, Nedore has some Moro Ojomo to him. It was obvious on a school visit to Round Rock how much Bo Davis covets Nedore.

EDGE (2-3)
Ashton Porter, EDGE/DL, Cypress (Texas) Cy Ranch
On3 Consensus ranking: No. 233

Comment: A PK favorite similar to Justice Finkley in 2022. How badly a staff wants a player is a good indication of how good their long-term chances will be.

Colton Vasek, EDGE, Austin (Texas) Westlake
On3 Consensus ranking: No. 293

Comment: Texas is in great shape for both Vasek and Porter. Vasek doesn’t possesses the athleticism and frame upside of Ethan Burke, but is a solid player.

Derion Gullette, EDGE, Marlin (Texas)
On3 Consensus ranking: No. 369

Comment: Texas has the most detailed pitch for Gullette, and it’s a compelling one given how raw he is as an ILB. A Texas vs. Texas A&M battle looms unless Marcus Freeman can change that.

Linebacker (2-3)
Anthony Hill, EDGE/LB, Denton (Texas) Ryan
On3 Consensus ranking: No. 13

Comment: Texas versus A&M and OU, barring some outside interference. A very winnable recruitment but you know A&M will go the extra mile.

S’Maje Burrell, LB, Fort Worth (Texas) North Crowley
On3 Consensus ranking: No. 293

Comment: ‘Our kind of guy’ personified. Burrell fits the mold for the modern linebacker with his intelligence and movement skills. Texas is battling Baylor with Oklahoma expected to make a move March 5. USC and Ohio State will also get spring visits.

Jayven Anderson, LB, Houston (Texas) North Shore
On3 Consensus ranking: No. 583

Comment: Given linebackers are hard to find, one route to go is to grow a safety into the position. Anderson will be 6-foot-1, 225-230 pounds, and run in the 4.5’s with safety ball skills. Gary Patterson approves. The Texas staff shouldn’t overthink this one.

Defensive back (5-6)
Dalton Brooks, S, Shiner (Texas)
On3 Consensus ranking: No. 59

Comment: One of the big Texas vs A&M battles. Texas needs a high-quality pure safety in the class and that would be Brooks.

Jamel Johnson, S/N, Arlington (Texas) Seguin
On3 Consensus ranking: No. 171

#AllGasNoBrakes

Bravion Rogers, DB, La Grange (Texas)
On3 Consensus ranking: No. 40

Comment: Texas took numerous versatile DBs in the 2022 class, but none had the speed of Rogers. Rogers’ ability to back pedal will determine where he plays in the secondary long term.

Javien Toviano, CB, Arlington (Texas) Martin
On3 Consensus ranking: No. 24

Comment: He’s one of the top defensive backs in the country and really good corners are hard to find. He’s also an unbelievable kid. Sounds like a professional when interacting with him. That will increase demand. UT is in a solid spot and it doesn’t hurt Toviano has two former teammates at Texas in Morice Blackwell and Trevell Johnson.

Jayvon Thomas, CB, Dallas (Texas) South Oak Cliff
On3 Consensus ranking: No. 118

Comment: Has strong athletic traits for the position. After the last cycle, pure corners are a need in 2023. Malik Muhammed is the better player today, but Thomas has the athletic upside. Dad played at Notre Dame.

Jordan Matthews, CB, Baton Rouge (La.) Woodlawn
On3 Consensus ranking: No. 113

Comment: Texas landing a stud from Baton Rouge won’t be easy, but if there’s a time to do it, it’s now. UT is better equipped to recruit Louisiana than at any other point we can recall, especially on the heels of a coaching change at LSU that saw Corey Raymond depart.

Athlete (1)
Mikal Harrison-Pilot, ATH, Temple (Texas)
On3 Consensus ranking: No. 89

Comment: Steve Sarkisian is involved in this one, which tells you quite a bit. MH-P has significant safety upside, but he’s good enough to play receiver at Texas even given what Sark selects for.

If we don’t land this exact class Sark has got to go.

no, not at all. Hey, people should go and live their life. But if someone is into closeted, self-hating self esteem issues with maybe a sprinkle of penis envy and 2nd tier academic standing, I can’t think of a better place to go.

If that is the 370th best player in the country, then there is a lot of insane talent out there.

I love that run that begins at the 1:23 mark.  At the 1:32 mark he straight arms some poor kid like "get that weak shit out of here."

It's hard to tell because he apparently is playing among 7th graders but that appears to be the definition of man against boys.

The two defenders at 2:24 tackling themselves. :D

3:37 You sit down here while I run over this way and score a TD.

Rushing- 238 carries, 1817 yards, 28 TDs
Receiving- 15 catches, 181 yards, 2 TDs
Also had an 85 yard passing TD

In this world of hudl, when i look down at the 5 minute mark of the video and the kid is still breaking long touchdown runs, then the kid is a baller.

The list of schools under consideration for Arch Manning grows

Spoiler

The list of schools under consideration for Arch Manning grows
STEVE WILTFONG

A recent report that 2023's No. 1 recruit Arch Manning is down to two schools is not true, his father Cooper told 247Sports on Wednesday.

In fact, because of regime changes at a few SEC schools, you can add two more programs to the mix for the five-star quarterback: Florida and nearby LSU.

The 6-foot-4, 220-pound Manning still has a keen eye on Alabama, Georgia, Ole Miss and Texas, schools he visited during the summer and returned for games during the fall. It's a good bet that those four plus the twosome of LSU and Florida will get Manning on campus in the spring or summer.

Clemson is the only program Manning has visited that is no longer under consideration.

When college coaches were on the road in January recruiting, Alabama's Nick Saban, Georgia's Kirby Smart, Florida's Billy Napier, LSU's Brian Kelly and Ole Miss's Lane Kiffin all came by the school to chat with New Orleans (La.) Isidore Newman head coach Nelson Stewart about Manning and his teammates. Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian used his allotted trip during the season for a game.

As a junior Manning threw for 1,947 yards and 26 touchdowns to four interceptions with another seven rushing scores. In his prep career he’s thrown for 6,307 yards as a three-year starter with 81 touchdowns passing and 19 rushing.

The Top247 regards Manning as the No. 1 prospect in the class of 2023.

Looks like Manning is #1 overall on ESPN now that Overton reclassified, so should be a composite 1.0000 on 247 once they update

It’s early, but it wouldn’t be absurd to go ahead and light the cigarettes on the 2023 class now, fellas.

Stuff to think about for this cycle at this early-ish stage. :

1) People who know their shit on the recruiting front do not like the outlook for Texas with the 2023 class. I mean, UT is starting from way, way behind in a lot of spots.

2) It's a down year in the state of Texas overall.

3) Texas shat itself and then rolled around in it on the field in the most critical year for this group of recruits.

4) ATM's cadre of money men and coaches decided over a year ago that they were going to make the push to win a national title, hell or waters high. That push will continue for two more cycles and only NIL may interrupt that, barring something otherwise surfacing in a Hugh Freeze-esque manner.

Here's what could stem the circumstances:

A) Bringing the full brunt of the UT alumni base and corporate base to bear on the NIL front. I mean setting a $50k floor for every position and then pressing down fucking hard with bigger bets for the premium roles and positions.

B) Arch Manning.

C) 9-4 or better on the field. This won't hurt, but don't kid yourself regarding the limits of its impact unless Texas wins the conference makes the CFP (LOL).

The good news is that no matter where there 2023 class ends up, you'll be able to refer back to a post from 2/3/2022 and say, "I told you so".

He gives zero fucks about your angle, he’s faster than you and knows it… but the play where he does cut back and puts the DB on his ass… I didn’t need to watch any more. Damn.

Ok, I just read the rest of the comments, seems like I need to keep watching…

I'm with Cooper on this one

- Sounds like they're considering eliminating the limit of 5 visits per recruit

- Are they also considering increasing the limit of 56 per year, for the school? Else, not sure how Cooper's second comment makes sense.  (But guessing they will consider at lease increasing that - if they aren't already doing so - else, highly sought-after recruits would end up taking visits away from lower-rated kids ... not sure they would want that to happen.)
