He ran a freaking 20.79 200m earlier this year. The composite doesn’t even have him in the top 15, which seems absurd. He’s the best athlete in this class by a mile. His athleticism at his size is literally unprecedented.

I wouldn’t say unprecedented, considering UT has a Big XII champion in the decathlon the exact same size.

He is literally about a foot taller than everyone else. The second place dude only comes up to his chest.

The tweet clearly states it’s the 4th fastest time and there are several articles referencing this as well, maybe it’s the 4th fastest indoor time? Also would like to point out he does it without any blocks.

Again, he's a freak athlete, there's no question.

I don't know to what the tweet is referring (perhaps indoors), but many high schoolers have run faster than 20.79.

Here in Texas last year we had a race in which three high schoolers ran faster than that.

Spoiler

The Longhorns had another huge week in Austin coming off of another spring scrimmage and a huge group of recruits on campus to watch the workout and take part in the AllGas23 event. While there wasn’t a name like Arch Manning in town, this weekend was probably a better group of talent than Texas hosted last week with much bigger numbers and some highly-ranked prospects in town.

Horns247 was able to speak with several sources regarding the weekend and are working on connecting with more of the players who came through campus over the weekend. How did the visit go?

In this week’s edition of The Stampede, Horns247’s weekly gathering of recruiting intel, we discuss the weekend with notes on visitors and more feedback on the Texas staff as a whole.

STAFF CONTINUES TO RECEIVE HIGH MARKS
We’ve mentioned in recent weeks that we’ve been monitoring feedback on how the staff is handling big visit weekends. There were some rough experiences last summer where recruits and families would sometimes feel lost in the shuffle, but we continue to hear those issues aren’t popping up so far.

Aside from targets and their families and several 2022 signees, Texas also hosted a few high school coaches for practice. Chris Gilbert’s hire as Director of High School Relations has been a smashing success based on what we hear from coaches. Having a guy like Gilbert who speaks their language and knows what high school coaches want to see has been fantastic for events like these. He’s also been an added bonus on the recruiting trail.

We also heard praise for Jeff Choate and Brennan Marion during the practice portion for the way they handled their position groups and the type of energy they brought to the field. One parent mentioned that the addition of Marion and running back coach Tashard Choice has totally changed the vibe and made this staff younger and more relatable.

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian (Photo: © William Purnell, Icon Sportswire via Getty Images, USA TODAY Sports)

Praise also extended to the support staff and the overall level of customer service from the recruiting analysts, on-campus recruiting staff and student interns. These visits are largely a fire drill and staffs are tasked with making everyone feel special. So far, we feel that’s happening from what we were hearing.

Gary Patterson is a longtime favorite of many older coaches in the state, and while a few mentioned that it’s been an adjustment seeing him in burnt orange, his role as special assistant to the head coach allowed him to spend time with those coaches and recruits during practice.

Most important was something we heard about Steve Sarkisian. The Texas head coach has a gregarious personality, and we were told he worked the practice well getting around to talk to every coach in attendance. One longtime and successful state championship coach compared him to Mack Brown in the way he’s connected genuinely with the coaches. That praise was specific to Saturday, but it was also mentioned on a few occasions that it goes farther than just in-person appearances. We’ve heard that some coaches around the country will turn it on when guys are in front of them but not follow through at other times. Sark was praised as easily accessible, and we’ve heard from a few guys that he was consistent about sending encouraging texts before playoff games.

The Longhorns will host their annual coaching convention next week, so the staff will have another chance to host some of the top coaches in the state.

BIG WEEKEND FOR WIDE RECEIVERS
Brennan Marion had a chance to show what he can do on the practice field in front of many of his top targets.

Johntay Cook returned for another trip and was able to observe practice and spend more time bonding with the staff. Cook was in town last week prior to the Texas Relays and a return this week was important. I don’t anticipate many big shifts in Cook’s recruitment, but getting him on campus at every opportunity will be important. Cook will see Texas A&M next week for the spring game and is setting up a trip to Florida. He talked in the past about returning for the Texas spring game, and that would be another opportunity to impress him. Either way, the Longhorns still sit in a very strong position for the four-star Desoto wide receiver.

Five-star Miami (Fla.) Gulliver Prep wide receiver Jalen Brown made it to town to see Austin for the first time. Brown came to Austin with his father who has a cousin that lives in Austin. Brown watched practice and sat in meetings. He spoke with all of the offensive assistants and met with Steve Sarkisian. One thing we heard with regard to Brown is how much he sees opportunities both on and off the field in Austin. It sounds like the family is already planning a return trip as well. In fact, I was told we could see another unofficial visit followed by a later official trip. Miami is going to be really tough to top, but Texas is now in the race.

Jaquaize Pettaway (Photo: Brian Perroni, 247Sports)

Langham Creek wide receiver Jaquaize Pettaway made it back to Austin this week. This is probably a race where Texas has gone from middle of the pack to the top with the least fanfare. A big reason for that has been Brennan Marion who has been able to connect with the introverted prospect. We’ve talked in the past about how Pettaway isn’t able to make as many visits because of his work schedule and busy home life, so getting back to Austin was big for Texas. While the Longhorns seemed to trail early on in this recruitment, we feel they’ve been able to get to the top of the pack. While schools like Alabama are headliners, I wouldn’t sleep on Oklahoma in this one. That said, Texas has been able to make quite an impression.

Dekaney wide receiver Jonah Wilson made his first trip to Austin since being offered, and we were told he was one of the recruits observed as having a great time at every stop of the trip. Wilson told Horns247 he felt love from the staff and said that even though there were a lot of top guys on campus. Wilson was a guy we had an eye on for a possible commitment, but don’t believe anything is coming soon. He did confirm that he’s working on a return trip for an official visit.

Austin Westlake wide receiver Jaden Greathouse seems to be on campus as often as he can be. We’ve been bullish about Greathouse and his chances of landing in this class, there’s nothing to make me change my tone on that. Greathouse is an Austin kid, and Texas is treating him like a priority at the receiver position. He talked about taking a bunch of other visits during the spring, but the fact that he keeps making the short drive to the UT campus bodes well for Texas.

LONGHORNS NET A COMMITMENT AT LINEBACKER AND ARE LOOKING FOR MORE
Texas landed a commitment from S'Maje Burrellwhich was key with a huge need at linebacker. Jeff Choate will now turn his attention to targets like Anthony Hill, Brad Spence, Derion Gullette and Johnathan Hall.

Hill made his way to campus and had the red carpet rolled out for him. We’ve mentioned that the praise for Texas in his recruitment continues to rise. This staff had to make up some ground when they got here, and it appears they’ve done that. A key source near Hill told Horns247 that as of last fall, they didn’t see Texas as a real contender.

Hill is a football nerd at heart and loves discussing scheme and technique. He met with Jeff Choate to go over the way the defense works and looked at some of his own film to see how he can fit and how he can improve in areas. Choate also showed him video of drills that could help sharpen some of his skills and how they translate to the field. From what we’ve been told, Texas is coming on strong, but there are some who feel Hill is waiting to see what the results on the field look like this fall.

2023 Derion Gullette (Photo: Brian Perroni, 247Sports)

There is still quite a ways to go, but that source said he no longer feels that way. This will be a heavyweight fight between some big time programs as the five-star heads into the summer.

Derion Gullette made his way to Austin before the weekend and before a trip to Tuscaloosa to see the Crimson Tide. Texas has been heating up in this recruitment, but Alabama will be a tough opponent. While Gullette talked a lot last week about his desire to possibly play close to home, his family is originally from Alabama. Obviously the Crimson Tide is a huge dragon to slay anytime you come face-to-face with Nick Saban in a recruitment, but we expect this to take some time to play out. Like Hill, we feel Texas has been able to do a strong job establishing footing with Gullette and his family but results of the fall could play a part.

FIVE-STAR BACK ENJOYS VISIT
Rueben Owens made a return to campus after missing a few previously scheduled trips. We’ve mentioned in the past that Texas is positioned well in this recruitment with running backs coach Tashard Choice and Brandon Harris on staff. Owens also spent time with several players including Xavier Worthy and Jahdae Barron along with Johntay Cook who he’s talked about playing with at the next level. Like Cook, I don’t expect there to be many major shifts in this recruitment throughout the spring. Texas just needs to keep putting in the work and they will be in the picture when this thing is ultimately decided.

AUSTIN KEEPS JORDAN MATTHEWS COMING BACK

Jordan Matthews (Photo: Nick Harris, 247Sports)

It hasn’t even been a year since Jordan Matthews was offered by Texas, but he’s already made four trips from Baton Rouge to Austin. The four-star cornerback got to see a different type of visit this weekend as he met with Terry Joseph and the team in meetings and walked through the process before and after practice. Matthews said that the experience allowed him to see what life was like for a Texas athlete and made him feel like he was already part of the program.

Terry Joseph has been putting in fantastic work in this recruitment, and we feel Texas is in a power position for the long cornerback. He said he’s seeing a summer decision timeline and already working on setting up an official visit to return to Austin. We will have a lot more on Matthews this week, but you have to love where things are trending right now.

LONGHORNS HOST IMPORTANT EDGE PROSPECTS
The Texas staff hasn’t been shy about adding pass rushers on the edge and they hosted three of their top targets over the weekend.

South Oak Cliff EDGE Billy Walton made his first trip to Austin after being offered during the winter, and he told Horns247 that he loved every minute of it. Walton was a key force for South Oak Cliff in their run to a 5A D-II state championship last season who used his length and athleticism to produce 12 sacks and 21 tackles for loss. Walton is a unique fit as he has experience playing with his hand down, as a stand up edge and an off-ball linebacker. That versatility would allow him to play in space and cover at times giving the Longhorns more flexibility on defense. It sounds like Texas made a strong move with Walton who plans to decide in the next few weeks.

Billy Walton (Photo: Andrew Hattersley, 247Sports)

Friendswood EDGE rusher Braylan Shelby was also on campus and spent a lot of time with Kwiatkowski and the staff talking about a potential role in the defense. Texas has been turning up the pressure on Shelby and treating him like a priority with Pete Kwiatkowski running the recruitment and Steve Sarkisian heavily involved. We should have more from Shelby in the next few days, but Texas is in a good position with opposition expected from USC and a few other schools.

Upper Marlboro (MD.) Charles Herbert Flowers EDGE Desmond Umeozulu made his first trip to campus. The cousin of 2022 Texas signee Neto Umeozulu is one of the top edge rushers in the country. We haven’t been able to connect with Umeozulu yet, but in talking to sources from the weekend, it sounds like he passed the eyeball test. Multiple people we spoke with commented on just how impressive Umeozulu looked in person. Those we spoke with felt the visit went well enough to warrant a return trip and a possible official visit in the future.

SAN ANTONIO SAFETY GETS BACK TO AUSTIN

COMMENTS
San Antonio Brennan safety Tyler Turner was offered by Texas at Junior Day in January while he was committed to Baylor. After decommitting a month ago, Turner returned to Austin once again. The visit was unique for him as it was the first college practice he’d ever seen, and he loved the behind-the-scenes look at how the team prepares. Turner also got a campus tour and was able to see what the dorms look like. With Turner out of his commitment to Baylor, Texas is in a good spot among the schools recruiting him. Turner is setting up an official visit for the summer and the Longhorns check a lot of boxes for him along with being close to home.

Well, “athleticism” isn’t just a 200M and there’s a bunch of NFL DEs at that size with freakish “athleticism” so it literally is not unprecedented

BeastTexas is correct, it’s the 4th fastest HS indoor time of all time. (That’s on me, I should’ve specified). Indoors has a shorter straight away and tighter turns, so it’s a harder race for the 200m and the time’s aren’t the same. I think the fastest HS indoor time is 20.62.

And also as beast pointed out, Harbor did it without a starting block, which is a disadvantage. He can run even faster.

Standish tldr confident Bama taking Holstein

Spoiler

Mike posted a loaded Stampede this morning with the latest scoop following a massive Texas Longhorns recruiting weekend this morning. While there wasn’t a name like Arch Manning in town, this weekend was probably a better group of talent than Texas hosted last week with much bigger numbers and some highly-ranked prospects in town. Here are some additional notes we heard from the weekend with more to follow throughout the week.

–Texas extended an offer over the weekend to Wichita (KS) Heights RB John Randle Jr. who is ranked as the No. 184 player in the nation according to the 247 Sports composite. The 6-foot, 180-pound running back blew me away when watching tape, and if he posts better testing numbers than his 11.71 100 and a 22.69 200 as a sophomore I could see him getting a bump in ranking across the industry. Randle is the son of former Kansas running back John Randle and the nephew of former Oklahoma State and NFL running back Joseph Randle, and when watching him play it's easy to see the similarities and influences from those two.

I caught up with a source to get up to speed on Randle Jr's recruitment and here is what he had to say, "The visit to Texas went really well for him. The family loved coach (Tashard) Choice and it meant a lot that Bijan Robinson spent quality time with him on the visit." The source mentioned that Arkansas was a school in a great spot with Randle but if Texas continued to push they could make up ground and cement a place in his top schools. Mike and I still believe that Texas will take two running backs in the 2023 cycle and should have more on Randle Jr. later on.

–One of the recurring themes we're picking up on visit weekends is how well the Texas staff is connecting with recruits across a wide range of backgrounds. Two major reasons for that are new additions Tashard Choice and Brennan Marion who have brought a surge of energy that was desperately needed. Marion, Choice, Gideon, and Banks were coaches that were highlighted as elite relationship builders while credit was given to Bo Davis and Jeff Choate for blending relationship building with scheme-related pitches to prospects. All in all the feedback we're getting is that the Texas coaching staff and off the field staff are firing on all cylinders and starting to complement each other's strengths and weaknesses.

–Lastly, I caught up with a source plugged in with Alabama recruiting that feels like it's a near certainty that Alabama winds up taking former Texas A&M commit Eli Holstein as their QB take this year. That's not to say that Alabama did a poor job on the visit with Manning, but word out of Tuscaloosa seems to be that Texas and Georgia are the runaway favorites for the No. 1 player in the nation.

Erriyon Knighton ran 19.84 as a 17 year old last year and made the Olympic team.

Does that not qualify for high school top times?

Knighton had already turned pro by then, so no. But it does count as the under-18 record. In fact, it’s also the under-20 record. That kid is amazing.

He’s like 50-60 pounds lighter than Harbor though. So he’s just a little less of a physical anomaly.

He ran a freaking 20.79 200m earlier this year. The composite doesn’t even have him in the top 15, which seems absurd. He’s the best athlete in this class by a mile. His athleticism at his size is literally unprecedented.

His 100 at his size and weight essentially matches DK Metcalf. Of course he’s 17 and plays edge. Wow.

Hi. I’d like to address these 200 meter times by talking about the old 220 yard dash, which was actually longer than 200 meters. I could regularly lay down a 22 second 220 yard dash back in the day. See if you can pick me out in the picture
