Texas Recruiting Notes 2023: Strippers, Monkeys, and 5-Stars

Texas seems like the logical choice.  If he goes to Bama anything less than a NC and many if not most of their fan base will consider him a failure and the same at UGA.   Add that to the fact that he will get better QB development at Texas and all the connections and friends that will be here.  I won’t be shocked if he chooses Bama or UGA but I will be surprised if he doesn’t choose Texas.

Lost in the hype of Arch Manning’s visit, there’s a good group of defensive players on campus.

We’ll start with defensive lineman Hunter Osborne. The former teammate of Texas freshman Justice Finkley had a great visit. That was a common theme for all the visits, but now we feel good about saying UT is in it with Clemson. Osborne will go to Tennessee next. Florida is still in this recruitment. We are fading Auburn as a threat, which is good because it’s the instate option. Every cycle has its own quirks and this one is providing some interesting UT/Clemson battles. We’ll see if UT can get a win.

Sydir Mitchell’s demand is greater than his ranking would indicate. That means Georgia and A&M are legitimate threats. Texas did what it needed to do to stay in this recruitment but this looks like one that will play out a little. This doesn’t seem like a recruitment that Texas would traditionally win but they are still in it.

We’ll get a Malik Muhammad update a little later. The family is set to see Sark momentarily.

On weekends like this, the recruits tend to spend more time with the players while the staff spends more time with the parents. Jeff Choate apparently knocked his portion of the visit out of the park. He basically gave the parents a free clinic. One person joked to IT he could probably be a high school defensive coordinator.

The staff is selling some interesting scheme changes. If you wanted to handicap who would lead the team in sacks, DeMarvion Overshown would be the best guess based on what the coaches think. He’s going to be on the edge quite a bit. Recall spring practice reports mentioning Overshown on one side Ovie Oghuofo on the other. They like his initial step and flexibility. The staff is also high on Jaylan Ford.

Gary Patterson clarified his role at Texas. Basically it was his job to evaluate the whole program. He was clear he‘s in Austin to provide an honest, candid assessment. If you want sugarcoating he isn’t the guy for you. Of course he’s also helping on coverage concepts, specifically helping to marry the front and back ends.

We have to finish with Arch, right? He’s currently with AJ Milwee. It sounds like he and Cooper had fun last night. This family is aces — it’s not really germane to the story but everyone who interacts with them comes away with a favorable impression.

We don’t know of a single credible person who thinks this dude is going anywhere but Texas. Maybe everyone, including IT is wrong, but I don’t think so.

Texas has had the perfect storm in this recruitment.

Our linebacker coach leaving the impression that he could be a high school defensive coordinator is not, in fact, knocking it out of the park.

Yea I don’t know what was up with that but it was a stupid joke

even more stupid to include that tidbit. I would hope a university of Texas positional coach could fucking coordinate plays at the HS level.

IF Arch is smart, he should never start posting on twitter.  He doesn't need more notoriety, he's gonna want more anonymity.

Better yet, he could have his agent take care of his social media to build his brand while he maintains his anonymity.

Actually just a really stupid comment. The guy was a FCS head coach and listed as Co-DC.
