Houston ship channel closed as Cirque de Greenpeace hangs from the Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman bridge

I think they're protesting something.  Some lanes closed on the bridge between Baytown and La Porte.  Not sure why they are quoting the Galveston County Sheriff's Office when this is entirely within Harris County and the tweet is from the Harris County Sheriff's Office.  Media not Mensa?

Are you telling me that every tanker that goes under that bridge is cutting that close?

No, but they can't risk them dropping something onto any ship or otherwise having a chance to harm the traffic or the channel below and make it worse.

hey, if you are gonna protest, make sure its a pointless gesture where no one has any idea why you are fucking up their commute today,.

Protesting oil in Houston seems a bit of a pointless gesture, probably with a negative return considering most of the bridge and highway traffic in that area is just people trying to get to their jobs.... in the energy industry.

Harbor pilots won't run a ship underneath a spectacle such as this.

Nice of them to clarify it is indeed a channel and not a sound.

See, if they were protesting something like trawler nets messing with the migration of pilot whales or something similar then this protest would work symbolically. As it is? Nope.

Give them thier 24 hours to hang out but let them know if not up after 24 hours and 1 minute, cables get cut. Its screwed up traffic bad. For the oil industry thats pretty good. All the care, trucks stuck in traffic burning fuel now have to go top off again.

That's a heck of a good point. Let's protest "oil" by making people burn more of it while we are in their way.

They are saying on the radio news that every now and then the "protesters" at the top of the bridge are wandering into traffic and stopping cars just for the hell of it.

HCSO says that as soon they hit 24 hours tomorrow everyone on the bridge is getting arrested.

And what if they don't come up after 24 hours??  Local sheriff guy has already said they weren't going to risk life or limb to get these loons.

So, loons going to be loons and maybe they just stay for awhile longer than 24 hours.

They never worked with law enforcement over this. They drove there. They are using cell phones. Thier Saftey gear is made from foss fuels. everything about this protest is counterproductive. Fossil fuels is used in almost everything. "Big oil" isnt making thier money from gasoline sales, its from byproducts used in the making of gasoline. I believe the ring leader up there Piper (perfers she and her as her pronouns) needs to be arrested immediately.

If they don't voluntarily get off the bridge tomorrow, then the CEO of ExxonMobil gets to tie a rope around one of the protestors on the end...

Meh.  Those saps in Houston are still JV material when it comes to this.

Austin knows how to work traffic in the right fashion.  We were all disappointed that the bus didn't make a right turn.

Where is this Fred Hartman bridge?

Never knew it was called anything other than Houston Ship Channel Bridge.

The obvious solution here is a few HPD helicopters hovering under them and slowly climbing.

These are the situations which make me regret giving up Falconry.

Shit, Falconry, just let loose a couple dozen pigeons.

Send in PETA, tell 'em the Greenpeacers are wearing animal pelts. Or maybe get some of them monocle sneks and let 'em snek slither down the ropes and do what monocle snek do. If they're using nylon rope get the Californians involved, tell 'em there's a danger of getting plastic into the waterways.

I’m in the Bay Area right now and can confirm 100% these fuckers don’t truly  care about plastic/garbage getting in the waterways. The homeless population’s volcanic-like explosion has tons of waste flowing into the waterways. It’s astonishing how rapidly this place is going down hill.
