I think he’s going to need a good combine showing to solidify a first round selection. I could see him slipping into the second day.

There are recent mocks with him going 19 to the Giants and 27 to the Browns.  The combine is going to matter but a mid to late 1st shouldn’t surprise anyone.

So who starts next year at position for UT? Does the DL take a downgrade? Just wondering.
Also, if he makes it in first round, does that show the Herman reign to have underutilized talent on campus?

The highest ceiling guy would be Prince Dorbah. Really versatile guy at Highland Park but long term ceiling as an edge rusher. Similar profile to Ossai coming out of HS, and no Todd Orlando to waste him for two years. Marquez Bimage opted out this year and was expected to play as a senior, so I’d also expect him to get snaps if he’s back. If not, I’m not really sure who they slot there. Dorbah was pretty lanky coming out of HS, not sure he’d be ready to be an every down, all season guy as a RS FR.

You don’t lose a first round talent and not feel it but Texas has a lot of DL talent and Giles, for as much flak as he gets as a recruiter, is a good DE position coach. I’d expect Texas to maintain good DL play next year.

The answer to the second question is obvious. He’s a likely first round pick after one year as a full time edge player after two years of Orlando trying to use him as a coverage LB, and Herman not overruling him.

I think we need to get Sweat to drop about 25-30 lbs. He made some great plays but he also stood up a lot before he moved. He needs to get quicker and have more endurance. I'd like to see him and Coburn in at the same time on occasion, especially against running teams. We won't have an Ossai, but with Ojomo, Bimage, and the two freshmen, we should be OK and get some sacks next year.

Ossai is just starting to scratch his potential.  Imagine Orlando using him at LB for another year, hindering his development.  So happy we actually got to see him utilized properly under Ash.  Not only is he badass player that gave maximum effort, he's also a great representative for this University.  Go make us proud Joseph!  Hook em!

Not even slightly mad at this news. Dude balled, and pretty much earned every second of playing time, and earned whatever level he gets drafted at.  Hope he goes as high as possible in the 1st..... but wouldnt be sad if he fell to the 6-9th pick of the 2nd round when Dallas could pick him up

He’s gonna wind up in Houston. Draft him early, put him with Omenihue and Watt and trade Watt after a couple of years because he’s the most injury prone badass on the face of the planet.

Pretty sure Boob traded away all the Toxins picks for the next couple years

No unfortunately -- Houston's 1st round pick for 2021 was traded to Miami...

Joseph Ossai makes Texas history with latest All-American nod

By   JEFF HOWE 6 hours ago

Joseph Ossai missed out on one of three chances to be the 61st Texas player to be named a consensus All-American, but a second-team nod as a defensive lineman on the 2020 AFCA?FBS Coaches’ All-America Teams announced Thursday by the American Football Coaches Association allowed him to make history. A starter in nine game at the JACK position, a hybrid defensive end/linebacker in coordinator Chris Ash’s scheme, Ossai becomes the first Longhorn since Michael Huff in 2005 to named an All-American at two different positions (Huff was an All-American at both cornerback and safety) after earning first-team All-American honors at linebacker from the Associated Press and the Football Writers Association of America at linebacker.

Ossai joins Huff, Nathan Vasher (cornerback and punt returner in 2001 and 2003), Russell Erxlebean (punter and kicker in 1976, 1977 and 1978) and Tommy Nobis (guard and linebacker in 1964 and 1965) as the Longhorns to earn All-American recognition at multiple positions in the same season. If Ossai is honored by as a first-team selection by the Sporting News or the Walter Camp Football Foundation he'll be the first consensus first-team All-American for the Longhorns since DeShon Elliott was a unanimous selection at safety in 2017 and would join Elliott, Malcom Brown (2014) and Jackson Jeffcoat (2013) as the most recent consensus All-American Longhorns on defense.

Ossai is one of five players in the Tom Herman era on the Forty Acres to earn All-American honors from an NCAA-recognized publication. Along with fellow 2020 honoree Samuel Cosmi (third-team AP All-American offensive tackle), Ossai is in a group with Elliott, punter Michael Dickson (consensus All-American in 2017) and linebacker Malik Jefferson (second-team All-American in 2017).

Ossai has raked in the honors from various publications since he played his final Texas (6-3, 5-3 Big 12) game, a 69-31 win over Kansas State on Dec. 5 in which he recorded three tackles, two tackles for loss and one sack (Ossai opted out of the bowl game and declared himself eligible for the 2021 NFL Draft as an underclassman on Dec. 14). A first-team All-Big 12 selection by the league’s coaches at linebacker and a second-team All-Big 12 pick by the AP at both defensive end and linebacker, Ossai has also been named a first-team All-American linebacker by CBS Sports/247Sports and ESPN in addition to being a semifinalist for the Chuck Bednarik Award (nation’s top defensive player) and receiving honorable mention for both Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year.

Ossai finished his junior season with 55 total tackles, a conference-leading 16 tackles for loss (No. 10 nationally), five sacks, three forced fumbles, one recovery, two pass breakups and two quarterback hurries. Ossai’s most memorable performance over nine games was historic in nature when he racked up 12 tackles, six tackles for loss, three sacks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery in helping the Longhorns score a 41-34 overtime road upset of unbeaten, then-No. 6 Oklahoma State on Oct. 31.

In the win over the Cowboys, Ossai became the first Power Five defender since Ndamukong Suh in a loss to Texas in the Big 12 title game in 2009 to record at least 12 tackles, six tackles for loss and three sacks in a game. Ossai concluded his monster afternoon with a walk-off sack of Oklahoma State's Spencer Sanders on fourth down in overtime to end the game.

Joseph Ossai becomes latest Texas consensus All-American

ByJEFF HOWE 12 hours ago

Joseph Ossai became the 61st player in the history of the Texas program to be named a consensus All-American with his selection to the Walter Camp Football Foundation All-America Team Thursday. Ossai was previously a first-team selection for the Associated Press and the Football Writers Association of America with his three first-team honors coming as a linebacker, making him the first Longhorn to be named a consensus All-American since Michael Dickson and DeShon Elliott were named unanimous All-Americans in 2017.

A starter in nine games at the JACK position, a hybrid defensive end/linebacker in coordinator Chris Ash’s scheme, Ossai is the first Longhorn since Michael Huff in 2005 to named an All-American at two different positions (Huff was an All-American at both cornerback and safety). Ossai joins Huff, Nathan Vasher (cornerback and punt returner in 2001 and 2003), Russell Erxleben (punter and kicker in 1976, 1977 and 1978) and Tommy Nobis (guard and linebacker in 1964 and 1965) as the Longhorns to earn All-American recognition at multiple positions in the same season.

Ossai, Elliott, Malcom Brown (2014) and Jackson Jeffcoat (2013) are the most recent consensus All-American Longhorns on defense. In the Big 12 era of the program (since 1996), Ossai and the three aforementioned Longhorns join a group of Texas consensus All-American defenders including Casey Hampton (2000), Quentin Jammer (2001), Derrick Johnson (2003, 2004), Huff (2005), Rodrique Wright (2005), Brian Orakpo (2008) and Earl Thomas (2009).

Ossai is one of five players in the Tom Herman era on the Forty Acres to earn All-American honors from an NCAA-recognized publication. Along with fellow 2020 honoree Samuel Cosmi (third-team AP All-American offensive tackle), Ossai is in a group with Dickson, Elliott and linebacker Malik Jefferson (second-team All-American in 2017).

A first-team All-Big 12 selection by the league’s coaches at linebacker and a second-team All-Big 12 pick by the AP at both defensive end and linebacker, Ossai has also been named a first-team All-American linebacker by CBS Sports/247Sports, ESPN and Phil Steele in addition to being a semifinalist for the Chuck Bednarik Award (nation’s top defensive player) and receiving honorable mention for both Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year.

Ossai finished his junior season with 55 total tackles, a conference-leading 16 tackles for loss (No. 10 nationally), five sacks, three forced fumbles, one recovery, two pass breakups and two quarterback hurries.
