The Cars have an underappreciated amount of guitar lines. They were the perfect band to bridge the 70' and 80's.

My 16 yr old son likes "The Cars".  I told him The news and he didn't react, I told him he was the lead singer of "the Cars" and he was visibly bummed out.  Kid has great taste in music, what can I say.

The Cars were my absolute favorite band for several years during the early 80s and remain one of them even now.  Losing Ben Orr sucked, and so does this.

RIP Ric.

Rip man.

My band plays Just what I needed and Dangerous Type. But alas there is no Paulina hanging around backstage.

Just What I Needed is pretty much a perfect guitar song with a perfect guitar solo. And I love that part where the snare and kick drum swap for part of one verse.

The Album "The Cars" was released in the Summer of 1978.  I graduated high school in '79 and the Album was honestly one of the single best first albums ever.  The amount of airplay they got helped make them a big part of my high school sound background.  Just songs that were mirrors of teen life then, "Just what I needed", and in particular "Best Friend's Girl" were just songs that were playing out as we cruised the streets every night. "Let the Good Times Roll" was a teen antherm for partying, and "You're all I've got tonight" encaptures that teen angst for emotional closeness.

Hard to believe Ocasek was like 40 at time of the release, yet the album hit all my teen buttons at the time.  Just one damn fine album!

An absolute masterpiece first album.  And some of the lesser played tracks are amazing.  "All Mixed Up" is one of my favorite Cars songs.  "Bye, Bye Love" is finominle too.  "Substitution, mass confusion, clouds inside your head..."

Well, he was 34, but agreed.  Easily one of my 10 favorite bands of the time and that hasn't changed much.  I'm a sucker for smart, hooky pop.  Maybe because it's really fucking hard to pull off.

Well, he was 40 when he met 18 y.o. Paulina Porizkova.  Ric Ocasek is the poster child of rock stars being able to pull the hottest tail irrespective of their own looks.  He was one ugly motherfucker.  But good work.

I think I heard Patrick Bateman saying the exact same thing to Paul Allen recently.

When Panorama was re-released a year or two ago it contained and additional track, “Shooting For You”. It’s pretty good and scratches the itch for a “new” The Cars song if you haven’t heard it.

The Cars first lp and Candy O were among the rarest of albums, the type where pretty much every song on 'em is kick-ass. I'd guess those 2 albums got the most play of any music in the mediocre cassette deck of my shitty ford mustang. I hadn't really listened to them in a long time but the last couple days I've listened and re-listened. It's really amazing how well those albums withstood the test of time. They sound great even today. I was surprised to learn the other day that The Cars put out an album post-Ben Orr's death, Move Like This in 2011. I gave it a listen and it's shockingly good rock and roll.

Here's a bunch of Ric Ocasek remembrances that Bob Lefsetz published in his newsletter - what various people, most still in the music business, wrote in to share about their thoughts. I thought some might find it worth a read. I'll spoiler it due to length.

I was thinking the same thing - The Cars hit the ground running - along w The Police and Dire Straits. Debut albums were great - in some cases their best work. Then there was Supertramp's Breakfast - about the same time. They were almost the same age as the aforementioned - but they started making albums much earlier - bad albums. So there is something to be said for late bloomers. Anyway ....

Yeah we've had threads about our favorite whole albums, beginning to end, rather than just the singles.  And The Cars The Cars is regularly mentioned as one of the best ever.  It's certainly one of my favorites, along with Boston and a handful of others I'm forgetting right now.
