The Longest Winning Streak at DKR Since 2009 Is Active & Oklahoma State Owns It

To me, this is chance to overcome another obstacle to make me believe more in the Herman Era. Last year it was winning at Kansas State and beating TCU. This year, we're not playing down to competition like Tulsa and Maryland last year. Now this is another monkey to get off our back.

We are better than Okie State. We have the prove it on the field though.

This is where I'm at. The last demon to exorcise before hardware starts getting engraved.

Spencer Sanders is an athletic QB but he's young and manageable as a defense.

Our garbage walk-on QB beat you last year, so I don't think this matters that much. But if it makes you feel any better, I think Texas wins this one. I just don't have a good vibe about our team this year. Should be a good game, Horns pull away late.

Are they going to task Kobe Boyce with guarding Tylen Wallace again?

Three Kobe Boyces couldn't cover Tylan Wallace.

We're just gonna hafta score a shitload of points.  Fortunately, Okie State probably can't do much to stop us from scoring a shitload of points.  If we don't turn the ball over, we should win a shootout.

Texas 45-35.

Is he expecting us to bleat back like a bunch of aggy? A few dumbass new money pokes might say something stupid, but most of us understand that our team has been terrible for most of its existence. We are rightfully pretty proud of our recent record against UT but we don't pretend to "run your state" or any stupid shit like that nor do we pretend that the previous 100 years didn't happen.

Looks like he's trolling BOTH fan bases to me. :)

I think it's going to be a tough game.  Your Pokes obviously know they can beat Texas and won't be intimidated.  If Texas wants this game, they're going to have to go out and TAKE it.  We'll see what happens on Saturday night.

I'll spoiler this since it's long as shit and I don't want any of you spraining a finger scrolling past it and use that as an excuse for the ass whippin' we're abou.....I can't even finish that sentence.  Much like last year, I see absolutely no way we win this game.  I'm almost always wrong, so we got that going for us.

Bullet points from Gundy's presser about the UT game

Spoiler

• Everyone knows who Texas is.

• Kevin Henry is doing “just fine.” Gundy said Henry feels better now. Henry practiced most of last week and should practice all week this week.

• On Texas: “Same as they’ve always been.”

• Texas defense is big, strong and fast.

• Sam Ehlinger is “considerably better than he has been.”

• “Just from what they’ve done this year, they have changed, in my opinion. They’re throwing the ball much more than they ever have been. Traditionally when they came in the league a few years ago with Coach (Herman), they were rushing the ball, more of a power team. I don’t see that now.”

• “I see (Ehlinger) as a better throwing quarterback.”

• Ehlinger’s experience helps with that.

• On having to come from behind against Tulsa: “If you battle back, you should be a little bit better team.”

• On Texas: “They’re still all big, strong, fast and can run. They’re all four and five star players. The difference is Ehlinger, in my opinion, is more comfortable and is playing well and is throwing the ball really accurate.”

• Gundy said it’s the same for his team each week whether it’s a big game or small one when asked about his win streak in Austin.

• On if he expects Devin Harper to play against Texas: “I hope so.”

• “I’ve said it every year, people talk about one conference or the other. In my opinion, you have six or seven teams a year that have an extremely high talent level that have a lot of money in the organization and their athletic department, and they kind of work in a different area. And the difference now is you can take the seven or eight, nine teams through about 50, throw them all together and anybody can win the game.”

• It’s common for competitive athletes to get frustrated as Spencer Sanders did Saturday. He said Mason Rudolph and Josh Fields did the same thing.

• “Spencer’s game hasn’t slowed down yet, and it won’t for another 10 games in my opinion. … It should start slowing down for him about this time next year.”

• “Supporting cast is huge for a young quarterback.”

• Golden story about Gundy going to Nebraska as a young quarterback: “When we went to Lincoln, I think it was 10 degrees and sleet and ice. Those guys up there that were on some really good, natural supplements. When I came up to the line, I’ll never forget, you remember they used to wear those jerseys with the big holes in them back in the day? And they were half shirts, and I was like the guy on A Christmas Story (with a lot of layers on) because I was cold. I was only 165 (pounds). I walked up, and the defensive line, they didn’t even have undershirts on. They had just their pads and their jerseys. I remember that clearly.

• Gundy said he got through those times because he was surrounded by great players, and he just did what they told him. “I knew they took the guy out in front of me for throwing interceptions, so I knew no to throw an interception.”

• The offensive line was between its Oregon State performance (good) and McNeese (average) against Tulsa.

• “I think we gave it to (Chuba Hubbard) 32 times Saturday, would prefer not to do that again. But if we have to, we will. He wants the ball.”

• He won’t know much on injuries until Tuesday. OSU didn’t have any injuries against Tulsa.

• The sweet spot on touches for Hubbard is 20 to 25.

• That number is more than Justice Hill’s number last season because of their bodies. “One guy is 185, and one guy’s 210.”

• Tyler Lacy has done much better. He was the team’s defensive player of the game against Tulsa.

• He didn’t see Mason Rudolph play yesterday, but he talked to him. He said Rudolph was excited.

• Gundy thinks Rudolph will be successful.

• Hubbard is “very serious” about football.

• “LD (Brown) needs to run. He’s chopping his feet, looking around, he needs to run. That’s his strength. He’s fast. He’s not as comfortable, in my opinion, as what Chuba is right now. … He should be preforming better than he is, and I think he will. He’s just a little unsure right now. We need him to stick his foot in the ground and go north.”

• Defense determines where OSU’s offense goes with the ball. That was how Tylan Wallace got so many targets.

• On Dezmon Jackson: “Hopefully he’ll be out there this week.”

• On previously blowing leads against Texas: “Some of those leads we had were against Vince Young, and in the second half, he turned into Superman.”

• “In order to win the Big 12, you gotta knock off whoever has been winning the Big 12. Over the history, in most times Oklahoma has been there. Early Texas was there, and they faded for a few years. Obviously now they’re playing much better. They’re in a position to compete for that title. So, our goal each year is to win the Big 12 conference because we feel if you win the Big 12 conference, you have a chance to get to the next round.”

• Someone told him this morning that his team has the country’s leading rusher and receiver.

• Sanders didn’t run as much in the first half because of the way Tulsa defended.

• On the five-game win streak in Austin: “We’re proud of that. We all know this, there’s certain programs that you look across the country and people recognize the name, and that’s one of them. That’s a great accomplishment for the organization and the guys that were here before and that we can compete with teams that essentially get their pick in recruiting and fluctuate on an annual budget of $235 million. It’s good for us, but we don’t see them as any different than anybody else. We have respect for them just like we do other teams we play.”

• Gundy doesn’t know why they played better on the road in recent years than at home.

• “Ambien? I double on ambien. You do ’em? Ten milligrams? I do 10 milligrams during the season.” “Helps you sleep, huh?” “I think so. I don’t remember. I don’t take them in the offseason, but I take them in the season. My mind spins a little bit during the season.”

• He expects to have air conditioning in the locker room against Texas.

• Texas never called Gundy when looking for a head coach. He doesn’t know if UT ever called anyone representing him.

• OSU will do the same thing in practice despite the jump in level of opponent.

• On horns down: “We’re not into all that. I’d rather just score touchdowns and celebrate together.”

• Gundy said he imagines the players get more excited for this game than the first three.

• Calvin Bundage status is the same as it has been. “He could come back in 10 days and be full speed, that’s what I’ve been told. Or maybe a month. I’m not sure.”

• He didn’t get to the bottom of the unsportsmanlike penalties against Tulsa: “I wasn’t able to find it on tape. Both of them happened about 45 minutes after the play, so I couldn’t find them on tape to find out evidence of who was guilty.”

• He’s unsure if the Texans on his team are more fired up for this game.

• He held up a 0 with his hands when asked how many of his guys Texas recruited.

• On if he was motivated to play OU as a player: “I guess. That’s been so long ago. I like to play every game. If you and I went over here and pitched pennies on that wall, I didn’t want you to win.”

• On what a win would do for confidence levels: “Make them feel pretty good. Make all of us feel pretty good. Then we’d have to get back down to earth to get ready to play the next one.”

• Sean Gleeson seems to be further along than other guys Gundy has had. Gundy said it hasn’t phased Gleeson much. “I will say this, I think Sean was more mesmerized by the police escort for the buses. He thought that was pretty cool because I think where he had been, he was actually driving the bus with the players there.”

• Gleeson is calm on game day.

• Gundy can tell if a playcaller is calm by listening on the headphones. “The guys that have coached here before and called plays here, there’s not enough machines to push beepers.”

• They let Sanders be who he is in terms of personality. Gundy said they’ve done that with all of the quarterbacks because if they are trying to be someone they aren’t, they’ll be seen as artificial and teammates won’t follow them.

• “(Sanders) needs to stay away from the referees when that mic’s on.”

I'm a little worried that he was upset at a couple of 15 yard unsportsmanlike penalties against Tulsa, then kind off blew of the question about horns down. I'm sure in his mind we shouldn't do it, but he needs to hammer into the players to not do it because its just something that players like to do, it seems. If we get penalized for that shit it'll be on Gundy.

I see the common refrain coming out with other programs about Texas where "same as they ever were. they've always been big, fast, and strong. a bunch of 4 and 5 star recruits" and, well, that's not accurate. Texas was undertalented from 2010 to now. Hell, Texas is still young, but for the first time in a very long time, the reputation of the program's talent is on par with the truth. If he's telling his team the same stuff, Gundy's guys are in for a surprise. This will be the physically toughest team OSU plays this year, and there are now a bunch of young guys running around that can also play.

I assume Patterson will reference the same premise, which is great, as far as I'm concerned.

I watched the OSU/Tulsa tilt last night and the Cowboys really underwhelmed in all facets of the game. Chuba something or other broke an early long run and the Pokes got up 17 before falling behind 21-20 at halftime or close to that.

Tulsa defense was able to shut them down and turn them over from that point on save for a jump ball to Wallace and Sanders sprinting free to the single side in an empty set look for a TD. The latter was not unlike Burrow going around the left end for yardage when Orlando decided to blitz the kitchen sink willy nilly up the gut early in the game.

Tulsa ran the ball at will for about two quarters and had numerous big  pass plays called back for OL blocking downfield. Sanders looks pretty average with some very frosh QB like plays and Chuba only did damage after his big run when Tulsa’s LBs overran their fits. The Tulsa DL named Player generally shat all over their OL.

We should comfortably win this one by 21, but the last decade of scarring and Orlando’s can’t figure out his defense until midseason routine makes me think this will be uncomfortably close with our DB’s single handedly keeping OSU in it by standing flat footed while Wallace hauls in jump balls.

I don't think that's what he means.  I think he's disregarding the last decade and really meant "same as they were prior to Mack Brown losing it".   I'm sure our guys are well aware of what they are about to walk into.  I know I am, but fuck it.  I'm going down to tailgate, watch as much of the ass whippin' as I can stand, and then go back to the tailgate and drown my sorrows.  Shit, I need to find a designated driver.

I think you're underselling us just a bit.  We really only played one bad quarter against TU and it was a doozey.  I like to think we were looking ahead to UT and not concentrating on TU.  The halftime adjustments our DC made were great and we completely shut them down in the 2nd half and the offense played a little better. We're all hoping Gleeson hasn't opened the playbook up, so you guys will probably see some things we haven't been doing yet.  Wallace would have had 4 TDs if they hadn't tackled him before the ball got there three different times.  Still, I think you guys should win easily if you play well.   We aren't getting any pass rush at all, we have no one at RB after Chubba , nobody has jumped up and claimed the WR #2 roll, and our QB has played only 10 quarters of CFB.

I'm underwhelmed by Sanders at this point. All I've heard was how he's got the strongest arm since Weeden but his deep balls against Tulsa were all underthrown. If he hits Wallace in stride, there'd be no PI. Plus he stares down the WRs too much, never looks at his progressions. I don't think we can get it done on Saturday if he plays like that.

OSU basically had two one play drives after halftime. Tulsa handled you offense without much issue otherwise after your one good offensive quarter.

I understand being a little flat and the playbook closed in anticipation of Saturday’s tilt. Texas looked pretty lackluster against Rice with regard to intensity and some execution busts. The difference is that Texas put the Owls away quickly. Tulsa is the better team of the two, but they’re still borderline terrible, and played toe to toe with OSU.

Also, Sanders underwhelmed. I can see him being a turnover machine if Texas gets up a couple scores and he has to press.

just went back and looked...looks like this is it.

we went four games without a win against smu from 1935 - 1940 (but one was a tie).  until 2016, we were 0-4 in austin against notre (losses in 13, 15, 52, and 96)  there are a few teams we lost three straight at home to...agros from 84-88, colorado from 90-97, arky from 33-37.

so yeah, captain mullet (now a perm'd mullet) solely owns the longest winning streak in the history of texas football for any opponent in austin.

unreal.

thanks for the research.

I had no idea Oklahoma Aggy owned us over the past nine years or so. Maybe I just blocked it out to deal with our repeated wandering in the desert of mediocrity over the last decade.

Can we please go back to the days when we would spot them 3 or 4 scores in the first half and then come roaring back to rip their hearts out in the 2nd?
