Don Cherry went and got himself fired.

https://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2019/11/11/don-cherry-fired-from-sportsnet-following-toxic-rant.html

Don Cherry is going off the air.

The long-time host of Coach’s Corner will not be back on Hockey Night in Canada following inflammatory comments he made over the weekend regarding new Canadians.

Rogers Sportsnet confirmed the decision with a statement Monday afternoon.

“Following further discussions with Don Cherry after Saturday night’s broadcast, it has been decided it is the right time for him to immediately step down,” Sportsnet President Bart Yabsley said in a statement released on Twitter Monday afternoon. “During the broadcast, he made divisive remarks that do not represent our values or what we stand for.

“Don is synonymous with hockey and has played an integral role in growing the game over the past 40 years. We would like to thank Don for his contributions to hockey and sports broadcasting in Canada.”

oJge5ieE_normal.jpg

I want to sincerely apologize to our viewers and Canadians. During last night's broadcast, Don made comments that were hurtful and prejudiced and I wish I had handled myself differently. It was a divisive moment and I am truly upset with myself for allowing it. (1/2)

I have worked with Don for 30 years, and we both love hockey. But last night, I know we failed you. I see hockey as part of what unites us. I have the honour of travelling across our country to celebrate Canada's game, and our diversity is one of our country's greatest strengths.

Though he has been branded xenophobic, his comments had not come back to hurt him until Saturday night when he went on a rant during his first-period intermission segment, saying he’s seeing fewer people wearing poppies to honour fallen Canadian soldiers, singling out those he believes are immigrants in Toronto and Mississauga.

“You know, I was talking to a veteran, and I said, I’m not going to run the (annual Remembrance Day montage) anymore, because what’s the sense? I live in Mississauga, nobody wears, very few people wear a poppy,” said Cherry. “Downtown Toronto, forget it, downtown Toronto, nobody wears a poppy. And I’m not going to, and he says, wait a minute. How about running it for the people that buy them?

“Now you go to the small cities and you know, the rows on rows, you people love — that come here, whatever it is — you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey, at least you can pay a couple bucks for a poppy or something like that. These guys paid for your way of life that you enjoy in Canada, these guys paid the biggest price. Anyhow, I’m going to run it for you great people and good Canadians that bought a poppy.”

It quickly became controversial, with even his broadcast partner, Ron MacLean, apologizing during Sunday night’s Rogers Hometown Hockey broadcast.

“I want to address what happened last night on Hockey Night in Canada,” MacLean said. “Don Cherry made remarks which were hurtful, discriminatory — which were flat out wrong.

“So, I owe you an apology, too. That is the big thing that I want to empathize. I sat there. I did not catch it. Did not respond.”

The NHL has also pushed back against Cherry’s comments, calling them “offensive” and saying “Hockey is at its best when it brings people together.”

Kind of always felt he was going to have a Cosell exit but still, what a bunch of pussies.

Huh.  Ok--you want to defend his comments?  Please go ahead.  I can't wait to hear this.

For the record, we all always knew Don Cherry was a retrograde racist.  He's like your retrograde racist uncle who is nonetheless fun and endearing.  But you don't let him express his racism in front of you without comment.  And you damned sure don't let him spout it at your place of business where his comments can be imputed to you.

He was a loudmouthed racist bastard with a bullhorn. I am not going to miss him. He never saw a Euro player he liked. He could have apologized, even halfheartedly, and might have kept his gig. But no that would have offended his ego. He would never back down from a statement, unless of course he contradicted himself in the very next broadcast.

He could have said a lot of things about honoring veterans and spending a couple of bucks to get a poppy, but nope he had to say it was YOU PEOPLE that ain't from around here that are messing up Toronto.

He made his own bed and shit in it.

How about Babcock?

I know there are some Leafs fans on here.

I've always liked the Leafs as my EC team. Sharpest uniform (all blue) in pro sports IMO. Surprised to see the firing but they've been pretty pedestrian this year and have high expectations.

This fucking sucks for the youngster.

Philadelphia Flyers forward Oskar Lindblom has been diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma, a rare type of bone cancer, and is expected to miss the rest of the 2019-20 season, the team announced Friday.

Lindblom, 23, will undergo further testing and evaluation next week and then begin treatment. The cancer was diagnosed by specialists at the University of Pennsylvania.

Ewing's sarcoma grows in the bones, or around the soft tissue around the bones. It primarily affects children and young adults.

The Flyers said they "will do everything possible to support Oskar and assist him in securing the best care available."

Lindblom has 11 goals and 7 assists in 30 games with the Flyers this season; he is tied with Travis Konecny for the team lead in goals. Lindblom missed the Flyers' last game with what the team called an upper body injury.

He had 17 goals and 16 assists last season, his first full campaign in the NHL. Lindblom, a native of Sweden, has 30 goals and 27 assists in 134 career games, all with the Flyers, who drafted him No. 138 overall in 2014.

Fuck Jeremy Roenick...meathead.

Former NHL forward Jeremy Roenick was suspended indefinitely by NBC Sports on Monday for his inappropriate comments about coworkers.

Roenick made a series of questionable remarks about fellow hockey broadcasters Kathryn Tappen, Patrick Sharp and Anson Carter during a recent appearance on the Spittin' Chiclets podcast. An NBC Sports spokesman said the suspension is without pay and the network would have no further comment at this time.

On the podcast, Roenick discussed a vacation to Portugal with his wife and Tappen. He made repeated references to the NBC Sports anchor's appearance and joked about the possibility of the three of them having sex together.

Roenick said they went on vacation together because his wife, Tracy, and Tappen are good friends. When another resort guest asked about the situation, he recalled, "I play it off like we're going to bed together every night, the three of us."

"If it really came to fruition, that would really be good, but it's never going to happen," Roenick said.

Roenick subsequently praised Tappen as "one of the most professional sports personalities I know."

Later in the interview, Roenick called Sharp "so beautiful" and said: "I'd have to think about it if he asked me. ... I wouldn't say no right away." He then seemed to contrast Sharp's appearance with his and Carter's.

"It's good to have a beautiful face that talks well that knows the game because it's totally the opposite when me and Anson get on there," Roenick said.

He also called Sharp, a former teammate, "one of the greatest, greatest guys on the planet" and said, "I think he's been great for NBC."

Roenick played 20 NHL seasons with the Blackhawks, Coyotes, Flyers, Sharks and Kings before moving into television. He has been an analyst at NBC Sports since 2010.

Gritty should have punched dad.

Quote

Police in Philadelphia are investigating a complaint that Gritty, the Flyers'  mascot, punched a 13-year-old following a photo shoot at a November event for season-ticket holders, a police spokesperson told The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Chris Greenwell told the Inquirer that his son, Brandon, playfully patted Gritty on the head after the photo was taken and walked away. Greenwell said Gritty left his chair, "took a running start" and "punched my son as hard as he could."

A police spokesperson described the incident as an alleged "physical assault" during a photo shoot, adding that the investigation is "active and ongoing," according to the Inquirer.

The Flyers have denied any wrongdoing by their mascot.

"We took Mr. Greenwell's allegations seriously and conducted a thorough investigation that found nothing to support this claim," the team said in a statement.

Greenwell provided the Inquirer with documents from a chiropractor saying Brandon was diagnosed with a back bruise.

Greenwell said he reached out to the team to request an apology and ask that the team do something special for his son. In an email Greenwell shared with the Inquirer, a Comcast Spectacor official told Greenwell it found no proof that Gritty hit his son, though the official offered to make up for the "bad experience."

After a disagreement over what was said in a follow-up phone call, Greenwell, who said he hasn't hired a lawyer, filed a complaint with police on Dec. 21.

The Flyers unveiled the orange mascot with bulbous eyes to mixed reviews in 2018, but Gritty quickly became a fan favorite and was described as "the toast of the sports world" by ESPN hockey analyst Barry Melrose.

When both of the Carolina Hurricanes goaltenders left Saturday's game versus the Toronto Maple Leafs with injuries, 42-year-old Dave Ayres came in as the emergency backup goaltender -- and stopped eight of 10 shots he faced to seal a 6-3 win for the Canes.

Ayres allowed goals on the first two shots he faced before stopping the final eight in succession.

Ayres, a Zamboni driver and arena maintenance worker for the Maple Leafs' AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies, has been the regular practice goaltender for the Marlies and has appeared at Maple Leafs practices and skills sessions this season.

"It was awesome, I had the time of my life out there," Ayres told the Sportsnet broadcast after the game. After he was named the No. 1 star, the crowd in Toronto gave him a loud ovation.

Per NHL rules, Ayers was paid $500 for the game, and was allowed to keep his game-worn jersey.

Carolina had a 3-1 lead when Ayres took over. James Reimer started in goal, but left 6:10 into the first period with a lower body injury. Petr Mrazek left in the second period after he collided with Toronto forward Kyle Clifford.

Ayres, a Whitby, Ontario, native, came into the game with a No. 90 Hurricanes jersey, but was wearing a helmet featuring Toronto Marlies decals. Several Toronto players came to give him stick taps after the second period.

Ayers' own hockey career was derailed by a kidney transplant in 2004. Ayres' mother, Mary, was his kidney donor. Ayres' last competitive action was an eight-game stint with the Norwood Vipers of the Allan Cup Hockey League. He allowed 58 goals, had a .777 save percentage and a 0-8 record.

The Canes mobbed Ayres after he made a save at the final buzzer. Ayres is the second backup goaltender to gain notoriety over the past three years. In March 2018, Chicago-area accountant Scott Foster was called on in a Blackhawks game and made seven saves over 14 minutes to seal the win -- and achieve viral fame.

The health status of both of Carolina's goaltenders is unclear. The NHL's trade deadline is 3 p.m. ET Monday.

Zamboni driver fills in as emergency goaltender. Gets the win.

I love this.  In what other major sport does something approximating this occur?  Closest thing I can think of was the 40+ year old Texas school teacher who eventually made it to the bigs for the Rays in MLB, but that was a process that took years.  This guy gets the call on a moment's notice.  Kudos to the crowd for giving him a great ovation even though he helped beat their team.

I came here to ask a question about the emergency goalie.  It's a great story, but is there something about being a goalie or hockey in general that some local rec league guy is better off than just padding up one your other actual players between the pipes?

He had been a minor league goalie in past and has been their practice target for years. He's used to NHL shots coming his way. I'd bet he was way more suited for the task than some rando off the team

Thanks.  I missed the part that he practiced with the team.  That makes a little more sense.  I still wonder how effective an actual non goalie NHL player between the pipes would be.  I guess it's just a completely different skillset that nothing really transfers other than being on ice?  Similar to how in football you have kickers/punters and the rest of the team not having a single lick of skill/knowledge of how to do that?
