After that 2nd goal they got their ass whipped. Great game by Khudobin, great D down the stretch.

Would have never believed this team was capable of this before the shutdown.

And I watched the game and we didn't fuck it up, so maybe the jinx was overplayed.

This team is getting better and better.  They're just a blast to watch.

I'm starting to wonder about this team.  They look like they might be better than we thought they were.

I know. I feel like I'm figuring out that a girl I have a huge crush on is into me. Just have to play it cool and keep expectations in check.

So if Bishop is ready to play Wednesday, what do you do?

I keep him on the bench without a second thought.

Maybe the better question is What would it take to play him again?

Yep. Sorry Ben. Khudobin is a freak.

Just finished watching delayed. Fucking fantastic D. Esp the 3rd period. Absolutely suffocated the Avs. What a backbreaker for them, lol.

Same. Took a break after first period to shower and take care of a few things. That was a goddamn 40-minute hockey clinic. Wow!

Hard for me to believe we can outplay them that badly and get rung up for five or six consecutive penalties.

Yeah, that was rather, uh, unbelievable. I couldn't believe the Avs were able to be that clean. Neither could Bowness...

This has been a hell of a little stretch for DFW sports (excluding Rangers - have already stopped watching that shit show).  I can only imagine what the AAC and Hero/Happiest Hour pre and post-game would have been like.   Sigh..

It's becoming clear this team was built for the playoffs. All the time spent shifting our focus from offense to sound defensive play is paying off in spades right now. I know I'm eating crow with this statement but players like Perry (ew) and Pavs are just tailor-made for the playoffs. Dobby too, apparently. Man has he looked calm and cool back there. Getting the first line going like they should and having the FCC line gel again at the right time is just sublime to watch. As Mr Wonka put it:

Colorado Avalanche

Better than expected: Nathan MacKinnon
Expected Win Rate: 4.51 wins
Playoff Win Rate: 7.85 wins

It’s extremely telling how otherworldly a player is playing when he’s on a list for “exceeding expectations” and the initial expectations were “one of the absolute best players in hockey.” That’s MacKinnon’s playoffs so far where he has 16 points in nine games and is running roughshod over opposing teams at 5-on-5, demolishing any player that dares challenge him. The Avalanche are getting two-thirds of the expected goals with MacKinnon on the ice, a ludicrous mark that’s well above his normally strong numbers. It’s led to a 10-2 advantage on the scoresheet and a win rate that would translate to nearly eight over a full season, an exceptionally high number (usually the best players over a whole season are around four-to-five). MacKinnon’s playoffs have been so absurd that there’s now legitimate debate as to whether he might actually be the best player in hockey. With how complete his game is and how he’s elevated it further during the playoffs, he definitely has a solid argument.

Worse than expected: Valeri Nichushkin
Expected Win Rate: 1.18 wins
Current Win Rate: -1.17 wins

During the 2018-19 season, Nichushkin was essentially a nobody – a top 10 pick who came back to the NHL after a two-year stint in Russia only to go scoreless over 57 games. But in 2019-20 Nichushkin finally began to flash his potential. He became an efficient point producer, putting up 1.9 points-per-60 at 5-on-5, and showed strong responsibility in his own end. He became a gifted defensive player with the Avalanche doing a strong job of suppressing chances whenever he was on the ice. Those two elements turned him into a strong middle six player, a solid depth piece that helped Colorado ascend up the standings. That defensive game is still apparent during the playoffs, but Nichushkin’s offence is back to being non-existent. In 10 games he has zero points and has found himself demoted to the fourth line in recent games as a result. The offensive ineptitude has led to Nichushkin being badly outscored at evens and it’s something he needs to address to make his defensive game count.

Dallas Stars

Better than expected: Miro Heiskanen
Playoff Win Rate: 2.05 wins
Playoff Win Rate: 5.47 wins

These playoffs have been a coming out party for several young, elite defencemen and Heiskanen is leading the way scoring 13 points in 10 games, an absurd rate that unsurprisingly leads all defenders. Through his first two seasons, Heiskanen has mostly been known for his smooth-skating and elite shutdown capability, but in these playoffs he’s beginning to really flex his offensive might. The offensive performance has been insane and the key to the Stars finally figuring out their scoring troubles – he’s been a real difference-maker in that regard, regularly turning the team’s forwards into the best versions of themselves. Most importantly though is his defence remains intact allowing just 2.05 expected goals against per 60 during the playoffs, a nearly identical mark to his regular-season rate. It’s hard to be that good at one end of the ice, let alone two, but Heiskanen has made it look easy in these playoffs. There’s a Norris Trophy in his future and it’s coming sooner rather than later. My model had him on the cusp of the elite tier before these playoffs, but his performance has left very little doubt that he’s already there.

Worse than expected: Andrej Sekera
Expected Win Rate: 0.14 wins
Current Win Rate: -2.35 wins

Dallas’s top two pairs have been incredible, both headlined by a superstar defenceman who’s capable of taking over games by himself. The team’s third pair? Yikes. That’s on Sekera who had a strong bounce-back season in 2019-20 but has failed to live up to that in the playoffs so far. Going into Game 2 against Colorado, Sekera had the worst expected and actual goals percentage on the team among defencemen and his pairing has been a huge problem at 5-on-5.

Cool stuff. Where does that come from?

That was from the Athletic.  It's fun when the advanced stats match the eye test perfectly, isn't it?

Also, saw this:

I don't remember seeing this angle last night, but you can tell it's in there.  I still think the ref called it a goal based on the players' reaction because you can't see that from the side of the net.

The logic I arrived at was, if it wasn't in the goal, you would have seen it on the line.
