From HORNSPORTS -- Louisiana Game

"One of the biggest moments of the game was Keondre Coburn blocking an extra point to keep it a 21-12 game and then BJ Foster recovering the ensuing surprise onside kick. Sarkisian mentioned after the game that special teams coordinator Jeff Banks had a feeling the onside kick might be coming and alerted Foster. All-around great coaching and execution."

What might have been. A marginal block in the back from (correction: Keilan Robinson, not Kitan) erased a 83 yard Jamison punt return touchdown. If you watched Kitan Crawford as a gunner when Texas punted, he did excellent work. Worthy had a nice punt return as well when Texas went to a two man return strategy to offset the Cajun punter's directional sneakiness. I think we'll make some hay in the return games soon.

Dicker went 1 for 2 on a pair of high 40+ yard field goals. One looked perfect and the other was terrible. He punted very effectively. The fat Cajun kicker was a never ending source of joy to me. Terrific football awareness and discipline from BJ Foster fielding the Cajun onside kick when they fell down 21-6. BJ kept his eyes on the kicker and fielded a high pressure kick very cleanly. Clean up a few things and Texas should have plus special teams this year.

Scipio Tex -- 2021 Texas-Rice Postmortem: Special Teams

Jeff Banks must have identified that Rice's right-footed kicker was drifting a little too much and that their outside offset protector weren't very physical. Solution? Line up a very physical dude like Ray Thornton on the edge with Keilan on his outside hip and have Ray mesmerize and destroy the Rice outside protector (notice that the Rice guy flanking him inside has no one to block) while Robinson sprints in on the soft corner and takes the ball off of the punter's foot. That's how you draw it up. Safety.

Dicker had 5 touchbacks on 5 kickoffs and Texas punt returners averaged 11.3 yards per return. Texas never punted.

(Scipio Tex) 2021 Texas-Texas Tech Postmortem:   Special Teams

Keilan Robinson had another impressive block that would've made it 21-0, but he was a shade into the neutral zone and that helped create a new set of Tech downs that ultimately led to a Raider score. Learning point there, but Banks needs to keep bringing it when he sees shoddy protection. At no time does he coach guys to line up (barely) in the neutral zone and it's pretty clear that Robinson has a real knack for this role. Let's not back off of our aggression here.

One reason is that punt teams that are overly concerned about the block will set up max protect and will be slower to actually cover punts. To that point, later in the game, Tech had to punt from deep in their end zone. Instead of predictably going for the block against Tech's max protect punt, Banks set up the return for Jamison who had an easy 43 yard scamper up the sideline. Texas started with the ball on the Tech 7. Two plays later - touchdown. Texas 49-14.

Jamison took out a couple of kick offs that he probably wouldn't have tried to return in a competitive game, but I'm sure the coaches will have a word with him about that. Dicker kicked off 11 times (!!!!) and 8 of them went for touchbacks.

Scipio Tex postmortem on tcu game

Who Forted? Texas notched its first win in Ft Worth since 2013. It didn't look pretty and TCU isn't a particularly good football team, but when a Texas game starts like this on the road against an opponent who has been a bugbear in the Longhorn psyche...

...and the team takes the blow, shrugs it off, and grinds out the W, I will take it, thank you very much. Better to learn through an ugly win than a loss that grants Patterson another year of prima nocta and the right to lodge an irritating ear worm in the brain of every recruit that he can get on the telephone. I've seen Texas fold too many times against the Frogs like the cheap laundry that the referees were throwing all over the field Saturday to not value the win.

Special Teams

The 87 yard TCU kick return is posted above. Watch it, then never look upon it again. Gia's Dad isn't going to be happy with either the lack of aggression or the lane indiscipline on that coverage. Props to Keilan Robinson for finishing the play and tackling the Frog kick returner on the UT 15. Dicker was 4 for 4 on field goals, but one of them was just a little too close for comfort.

Texas did a solid job returning kickoffs, averaging 26.2 per, but D'shawn Jamison's failure to field a pair of punts cost Texas about 30 yards in field position and the Horns also had a personal foul that subtracted 15 yards from a return. Overall, not the dominance we've seen over the prior two weeks. Texas will need this unit firing against the Sooners in Dallas to create some momentum shifts.

(Scipio Tex) 2021 blOU Postmortem:   Special Teams

Special Teams

A terrific punt block early led to a huge swing of momentum and easy points. The punting game was also influenced by wind, as both punters notched massive punts when it was in their favor. Both field goal kickers were also on point. Obviously, the game swung when Xavier Worthy fumbled a late kickoff that he fielded 5 yards deep in the end zone trying to make something happen. Stud freshman try to make things happen no matter game context. That’s why they are studs. Coaches exist to inform true freshman studs that he’ll make his play on offense in the passing game and that he needs to fair catch that. Did that piece of instruction occur?
