2019 - 2020 Dallas Mavericks: Eastern Bloc > Western Conference

Dallas coaching (zero rim defense) limits the greatness of Mavs players. A healthy KCP might help, but the coaching philosophy remains unproven.

Wut

1. Dallas has objectively one of the best coaching staffs in the league.
2. How the fuck does coaching limit the rim defense?
3. The rim defense hurts with the 7’3 Latvian being out. Powell/Kleber have been really good in his absence.
4. Kentaviois Caldwell-Pope is not our 7’3 Latvian.

Good game by Dallas v. Portland last night. Portland started off hot and Dallas just rained in 3's to overcome.

Doncic was fantastic as usual.

2 out of 3 usually ain't bad, but that coaching take.....peeeeeeeyouuuuuuuu

It was curious to me that they chose not to double Carmelo when he posted up, or help when lillard kept blowing by whomever for layups. Afraid of open 3s I guess. Ended up working well enough since Dallas was hitting its 3s but Portland shot like 70% from 2 and points in the paint were as lob sides for Portland as points from 3s were for Dallas (though ESPN only chose to highlight the 3 pointer differential)

No need to be defensive . . . the Mavs certainly aren't.

Good team, but the D weakness is glaring. At present, Mavs in that 5-7 pack behind LAL, DEN, HOU and LAC.

The post-up player is effective against the Mavs - perhaps because the coach thinks it is an outdated mode of scoring. That may not be how the Mavs run their offense, but they are vulnerable to it and it has created losses. Not last night, but the Lakers will run that all day. The Nuggets and Rockets will run it to beat the Mavs. Hell, Carmelo did it last night with surprisingly good results. The threes prevailed last night, but that was Portland.

Mavs are one player away to being in contention for the West. Perhaps that player is a healthy Portzingis? Doncic is amazing. The perimeter game is played well with the long rebounds. But the D is soft right now for a championship run.

At present, the Mavs are in the 2-6 pack with only 2.5 games separating those teams.    They have a 4 game lead in the standings over the 7th place team.

For the record- the Mavs have the 16th best defensive rating and are 7th in defensive rebounds, to go with the best offensive rating and third highest net rating. The Mavs need KP to protect the rim and stretch the floor, but this is a good team and still good enough defensively without him for a bottom third seed in the playoffs

Carlisle hates doubling or playing help defense.

Yeah that Coaching take is horrible.

They won't be mistaken for the Clippers, but they are not horrible defensively.  They give up more rim points right now because their one Rim protector is out.  That isn't a coaching issue as much as a personnel issue.  But by adding a big to defend the post more takes away from the elite offense AND what pieces are you giving up to get that player.

Unless you're lucky enough to find a guy to defend the post more AND will replace some of the shooting that they'll have to give up to get that guy, you're just not fixing that right now.

BTW, why are you acting like they should be title contenders right now?  They were supposed to be a fringe playoff contender.  Challenging for the 8 seed before the season.  Being on the cusp of a Top half the Western playoffs means they're at least a year, maybe 2, ahead of schedule...STILL with time to improve in the next year or two.

They could be title contenders with how Doncic has taken off. They need one more guy.  Maybe Capella? With GSW back to form next year, strike while the iron is hot.

Dallas plays more zone defense than anyone else in the league. Or has in previous years, I know more teams are playing it more.

You think Houston is going to be sellers?
