Just re-watched the game (was at the game last night, so couldnt see it as well). Can someone please explain to me how in the ever living fuck the officials ruled the Jake Smith fumble a recovery by the KU defense?

what am I missing? I thought it was easily the worst call ive seen in a few years

The only explanation I could see was that the KU guy got to the ball first and had a hand on it, then Brewer got there and grabbed it and twisted away but the KU defender still had his hand on the ball, so they ruled he had possession before Brewer.

KU guy had it, Brewer wrestled it away, then KU wrestled it back after the fact. Probably should've been Texas ball, but KU did end up with it last. I've always thought they should award it to whatever team can emerge from the pile and hand the ball to the ref. Would be brutal a lot of the time but it would take all the guesswork out.

Worth noting that Smith get fucking popped on that play. Ball security could've been better but there wasn't a whole lot else he could do there. You're not in Arizona private school ball anymore son.

Have you not seen Big 12 refs before?

Essentially this. If you took every single big 12 ref and combined their brain power, it would equal exactly 17 aggy. And that is why they didn’t overturn the call. Also see the call they made in the tech vs Baylor game for further proof.

I could see it either way, was confused though as it appeared the ref tapped Brewer on the back as if indicating to the other refs that this was the guy who recovered

These are both wrong. Ku guy got a hand on it when Brewer took it into possession. A ref came in from ku sideline e yelling “white ball” And somehow they do not overturn it.

exactly.  the KU guy never had, even remotely, full control of the ball.  Brewer took it, had full control, and then was down by contact. the big 12 booth review refs are horrible.  no reviews on the helmet to helmets in the OU game.

I just figured some KU kansas city faggit fingered Brewers anus and that made him let go of the ball.

Wait, that's Missouri, isn't it?

It's both. Most of which is on the Missouri side if I remember my geography correctly.

Whatever the case, Smith needs to work on his ball security if he wants to stay on the field.

This. But he looks like he’ll be a damn good one if the can get it under control. You can tell he wants the big play, but security is lackluster so far.

Credit to Lee, the KU safety, he put all of his force exactly on the ball. Hell of a tackle.

I mean, technically it was an illegal tackle, but hell of a tackle nonetheless.

Even the best can fumble when the helmet his the ball.

Hate to quote Lane Kiffin, but I feel like it applies to Big XII refs more than just about any other conference (although it seems like the Pac-12 guys seems like they're close):

The replay was weird - I couldn't see the ball at all. They weren't going to overturn that no matter what the original call was.

The best view was obscured by a player moving through the line of sight at exactly the wrong time. A ref (?) blocked the view from another angle. Frustrating as hell because you could tell Brewer was securing it.
