I didn't think Mike Bloomberg was going to get much traction.

I underestimated what flooding the airwaves would do.

Now I'm pretty sure it's going to come down to Bloomberg and Bernie.

Bloomberg wins that easily......

Here's what happened:

1.  Most of the Dem voters assumed Trump was easily beatable and that any of the final candidates were an easy win

2.  They tuned in to watch the debates around the same time.  They were horrified.

3.  Trump beat impeachment.  (This really doesn't matter much.)

4.  Trump's poll numbers started to hit 50%.  (This was YUGE.)

5.  Voters realized for the first time that yes, Trump could actually win again.

6.  Enter Bloomberg who had been dumping a shitload of money on ads and is imminently electable.  (He knew the support for the final candidates were weak.)

Sorry, should have worded that better.  "Perceived as a moderate."
People are stupid and perception is far more influential than reality.  Regardless of how true it is, right now Bloomberg is "perceived" to be a moderate compromise candidate for the Dems.

Seeing all this “Rise of The Bloomberg” and the positioning of him as this compromise candidate makes me absolutely SICK that Beto dropped out so early.

And Amy must be feeling extra bitchy watching this - an actual lifelong moderate Democrat whose been in this race from jump and she’s just getting passed over by another loud rich old white New York businessman.

Conventional wisdom when Bloomberg entered late was that he had no chance because he entered too late and the other candidates were more established and had more time for the voters to get behind them.

When it actually turned out to be a brilliant move. The average person is fickle and bored easily. The candidates who declared early weren’t getting to bond with the voters - they were around too long and the voters got bored with them.

Bloomberg jumping in late made him the new shiny toy and also hadn’t been shitting on the other candidates for months and didn’t have very online stans alienating other supporters. So when Beto and Kamala and Booker dropped out, they didn’t have bitter feelings about Bloomberg and they weren’t bored with him.

So given the chance to back an automaton asshole (Pete), the schoolmarm who makes them feel a little dumb (Warren), the other woman with the funny name who makes mom jokes (Amy), the frumpy grump with asshole supporters who laughed at them when their first choice dropped out (Bernie), or the guy who has been touted as “The Guy” but has been uninspiring and coasting on his Obama association (Joe), the supporters of former candidates were left feeling meh or pissed off about who their choices were.

And in walks a shiny new guy with ads running all day, every day. And there’s no built up hard feelings. And, hey, Republicans and Independents like him too!

And that’s how we got Bloomberg at 15% nationally and with what appears to be some momentum.

This is going to be an easy attack ad against Bloomberg even as he wants to try and distance himself from his Stop and Frisk policy.

Tell us how you feel Mike. Tell me again how I should vote for someone like Mike or Joe. Tell me again how a Bernie Bro would react. Did you listen to the audio?

Bloomberg is just taking over the spot a younger , less fried Biden would occupy IMHO. The blacks will go to Bloomberg as long as the other alternative is Bernie because Obama will stump for him. There will be all kinds of stop and frisk backlash but when Obama forgives and forgets, all will be ok.

They will never go for a gay young white dude because they don’t like the gays and they can’t overlook it. He’s gay married, 1, and it’s not like a gay older lady. They look the same as regular old ladies so you can’t tell / you don’t care. Non-hot and not-butch lesbians are socially acceptable. Think Annie’s Parker from Houston.

And I don’t think they trust Bernie. Vermont? He might as well be from the moon.... not in that they don’t know him or agree with a lot of the policies. It’s just that he is not one of them and it’s obvious.  Neither is Bloomberg, but somehow the NYC mayor helps him with southern blacks more. The coastal ones maybe not. But he’d win those states anyway.

these are my opinions as a white dude who has done no research and is going off my experience.

Bloomberg would shred Orange Shrek in the debates.  Seeing him make fun of trump's "business acumen", with trump completely unable to intelligently respond, would be glorious TV.  Glorious.

Trump would also probably drop dog whistle-my anti-Jewish stuff as well which would spice things up a little more!

Nah see he apologized for it so it's not a liability at all once this gets cut up and used in an attack ad.

Trump will refuse to debate and Bloomberg will replace it with something in front of one of Trump's abandoned casinos in Atlantic City.

I did see Bannon on Maher.  He was screaming about Bloomberg being a billionaire.  I guess Trump isn't a billionaire anymore.

The gop twists every narrative.  Remember how John Kerry was the bad guy because he fought in Vietnam’s while Dubya was allowed to pretend to serve in Houston learning how to fly a jet.

We’re already hearing how billionaire oligarchs are bad.  As another poster says, I fully expect some anti Semitic dog whistles as well.

Counterpoint: Trump would be pissed that Bloomberg would be getting publicity that he feels is his.

Remember, Trump thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room, and the best debater.  His ego will push him to show up at the debates.

Not sure if he's done this, and I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't want to, but if Trump doesn't want to debate, Bloomberg could just hammer and hammer him the way Trump thinks he's so adept. Release his Taxes early. Point out he has nothing to hide. Call himself a "Real Billionaire." Point out that he earned it all himself, as opposed to just being a big trust fun baby who's businesses keep going bankrupt. Just hammer and hammer him on his business acumen in an "anything you can do, I can do better." Trump will go insane. "Hey, listen, I'm pretty sure you dont want to release your taxes because you're a criminal, and because people will see that you aren't a real billionaire. My money is on both."

Agreed that the a stick (tax) approach won't work.  Rich Americans need a carrot, even if it's not very tasty.

This is where all the infrastructure and renewables buildout come in to play.  If, as a matter of policy, the US provided liquidity (a la Fannie/Freddie) by buying infrastructure and renewables debt, that would really lower the cost of capital for those projects and let the private sector do what it does best with capital allocation.

It would also provide a backstop to asset values, as Fannie and Freddie are for home ownership.  The yield for the equity side of the investment would flatten, as risk is lower, but it can't go any lower than the debt.  That creates a very natural rev limiter on asset values and prevents too much speculation (so no terrible bubbles).  There would be a ridiculously high volume of very low-interest debt in the market.  Wealthy people are then faced with the choice of continuing to inflate asset prices in the stock market, which carries a ton of risk, or funnel money to into a safe haven, which just so happens to accomplish another policy goal for Ds.

You should post more.

Bloomberg's money is showing that you can start some buzz with ads even if the media is basically ignoring you. And I don't blame them for ignoring Bloomberg because the story over the past few weeks is Iowa, NH, the debates and the impeachment. All of which had nothing to with Bloomberg. When he is actually on the ballot for the next primary, they will spend more time on him.

I think he's got a pretty good chance. Black voters already like him more than Bernie Sanders.

We'll see, Biden has been shedding support and Bernie is going to have a massive volunteer army to knock on doors rather than Bloomberg just spamming ads. I may be dead wrong, but Bloomberg is getting a lot of attention only because he's ran so much advertising in the south, like where in live, when no one else has yet. I think that changes as the primaries get closer and I seriously doubt he's going to have a ton of people signing up to volunteer and go knock on doors for him.

The party is looking for anyone who can knock Bernie out. Bloomberg might be their guy.

Bloomberg's new ad is all about him getting fired at 39 and then inventing his computer gizmo, getting super-rich, and creating 20000 jobs at his company. It's narrated by a semi-familiar voice, one that kinda sounds like he's drunk. Turns out it's Michael Douglas, who then says "I've played presidents on TV" and says MB is who America needs etc. (He's also going around saying "Bloomberg for prez" are among the last words his dad ever spoke. )

The ad is airing on Country Legends radio in Houston and is most likely aimed at regretful Trump voters / stay-at-homers in Houston's outer ring exurbs.

Don't disagree with you, BUT I have also read that a lot of people in the DNC hate him too because he's just trying to money whip his way into a nomination.

The DNC (wrongly, I think) believes Bernie Sanders is the best way to lose to Donald Trump. I think the DNC will choose Bloomberg over Sanders no matter how much they might dislike him.

At this point anyone with the ability to sidestep the whims of the DNC is a fucking positive, in my mind. These guys seem intent on fucking up a bowl of soup, so lets go ahead and remove their ability to self-sabotage.

In regards to another poster, I'm not sure that other campaigns will be able to compete for ad time later on in the process. Bloomberg will simply out spend them for spots and lock them out. Radio stations buy in bulk, and this guy is selling.

He's launching "Mike for Black America" at Houston's Buffalo Soldier Museum Thursday. (Not sure if that's the national kick off for that sub-campaign or just part of it, but it's billed as the launch.)

To paraphrase an old thread, When Mike Bloomberg makes his move for black voters, Joe Biden should look out.

The problem is that he is not going to have the canvasser army that Bernie has, all he is doing is running ads but he's not going to hire enough people to out compete people going to door to door who truly support Bernie (and yes I know I'm a biased Bernie supporter). I really think he's a placeholder for undecided voters and that he has a ceiling. I hope like hell I'm right, I hate the DNC too but Bloomberg is the last person I'd like to vote for against Trump.

In my entire life, I have never once encountered a door-to-door canvasser for ANY politician.  I've seen 20+ Bloomberg ads just this week.

Where do you live? I had several in 2018. Ads are one thing and can get him support, but that's not the only thing that would guarantee success otherwise he's be clearly at the top of the big Super Tuesday states.

Color me a cynic, but I'm not sure canvassing is going to be all that effective. I'll admit that I'm ignorant the details involved, but when someone political knocks on my door, I don't want to hear it. I don't want to waste my time on it. Who are the people who welcome in canvassers for a cup of tea? Old people? Good luck changing their mind to Bernie Sanders, at least in the South. And I'm also not sure Bloomberg can't buy guys on the street to knock on doors anyway. Door to Door Sales is a wildly corrupt and successful industry (that typically preys on the fucking old), he can hire those guys in every major city and they'll be thrilled to meet some quotas and repeat a sales bitch for fucking Hitler Reborn if you pay them. Sanders canvassers will win on straight passion, and knowledge of their candidate's ideals and policies, but I'm not sure the audience he needs to win over is receptive.

This is an honest question. Show me the last presidential election that was won on the backs of grassroots canvassing? I'll take radio ads, facebook ads, things that show up on phones and tablets, television and email. That's where I'd bet.

If Bloomberg starts looking like the guy, and keeps gaining and gets momentum, I assume the DNC will shut the fuck up and get out of the way. I assume. Who knows. That being said, the cries from many posters here of him co-opting the Democratic party even further will be interesting reading.

I mean this is literally the focus on Bernie, I don't know the last one because it's probably been a very long time. Canvassers are not going to older white folks who they know are less likely to change their minds about Bernie, they're going to go to the underrepresented and disenfranchised (see satellite caucuses going overwhelmingly for Bernie in Iowa, lots of people on the ground in SC where the narrative is Bernie supposedly can't get black support). Just search on twitter, you'll see a lot of examples. Yes I'll concede this may not work, but it's the only other way to fight against someone who worth, what, $52 billion who can easily outspend you?

I mean, yeah man, shoot the shot you can take. I get it and I'm all for it. But none of this exactly counters my hunch that Sanders might not be well positioned to beat out Bloomberg, or Trump. I'm all for ideals. But at this point, I'm not interested in a Try Hard, I'm interested in the best chance to fucking win. I don't care about college spending. I don't care about healthcare. All of that is moot until you get that criminal out of the office. In fact, they're liabilities.

As somebody who has knocked on a lot of doors, good GOTV is exactly that:  Get out the vote.  You identify your supporters and strong maybe's and stay on them to make sure they show up.  Just mindlessly banging on doors hoping to convince somebody is really pointless, and can be counterproductive.

Most well run campaigns do voter ID over the summer so their supporters can have productive GOTV in the fall.  You aren't trying to convert people, you are making sure you get every one of your yes voters to the ballot box.
