Things not going well in Bolivia

Bolivia is 2 entirely different countries. The mountainous raises cocaine. The flat land is rich farmland. Morales kicked out the American DEA and told the coca farmers to have at it. As you would imagine, they got rich. That wealth drove development in the whole country. Not sure that model is sustainable, but they did well to get there.

A CIA op to overthrow a leftish South American leader in a military coup. We tried to do this in Venezuela with the puppet Juan Guaido, but it failed.

It's hilarious that we talk about our country like it's some moral paragon separate from the likes of Russia and Saudi Arabia. An absolute joke.

Meanwhile, what powerful people in this nation are calling this out? Which people in Congress or the executive are calling this out?

- Bernie
- AOC
- Ilhan Omar

Anyone else? Bueller? Bueller?

"South America is a mess." - That we fucking make.

One of the fucking awesome things that always comes from these US-intelligence-agency led/fueled/funded military coups is the increase in racist violence against minority/indigenous populations! Turns out giving cops and troops total power is a bad thing!

This is Bolivian police cutting the whipala off their flag patch. The whipala was added to the flag to represent the massive indigenous population in Bolivia.

If your chosen candidate isn't saying anything, ask yourself why.

This was not a god damn right wing coup.  He was even losing former Aymara supporters.

When you are term limited, but want to run again -  you set up a referendum asking if it is the will of the people for you to run again.  When the people tell you to go fuck off and that you have been in office long enough, you head over to your packed court and get them to change the constitution to allow you to run again.  When you know you don’t have a majority and your only way to win is by avoiding a runoff, irregularities happen.

This is simply people standing up to a potential tyrant.

The cops are literally cutting the indigenous part of the flag off their patches on video in front of your face.

tHiS iS nOt A rIgHt-WiNg CoUp!

The OAS called for him to step down; an OAS dominated by the United States who recently failed in a coup attempt against Maduro.

Evo won the vote. There was no bizarre jump. His win was right in line with polling.

This is a fucking coup, boot licker.

In fairness, NPR did have a lovely little story about Bolivia's high-altitude wines becoming a thing too a few weeks ago.

No one here is an expert in American contemporary domestic politics, what are you talking about?

The standard isn't that everyone has to be an expert before commenting. Reading what experts have to say suffices. Reading about the events on the ground suffices.

The military of a nation pushed out its democratically-elected leader. That's a coup. It's what the word means.

Who could have guessed some of the biggest scumbags on the planet were involved in this coup.  I hope there is a hell awaiting them.

Quote

A series of 16 audios in which opposition leaders call for a coup against the newly re-elected president Evo Morales were leaked through various social platforms.

Local media point out that the destabilizing plan would have been coordinated by the United States Embassy in Bolivia prior to the elections and cites US senators Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, who are said to have direct contact with the Bolivian opposition in the strategy to overthrow Morales.

The plan focuses on the fact that if Evo Morales won the elections on October 20, a civil-military transition government would be established. The new government would allege fraud in the electoral process and would not recognize Morales' electoral victory.

In the audios filtered through social platforms opposition leaders call to burn structures of the government party and to put together a general strike throughout the country and to attack the Cuban Embassy in that country.

The publication of the audios arises in the midst of the political crisis following the electoral triumph of Evo Morales, whom the opposition accuses of committing fraud.

Weeks ago in a speech President Evo Morales had referred to alleged coup plans and that his government had the recordings. Neither the opposition nor the United States Embassy has referred to the leakage of the audios.

Anyone know why Marco and Ted have such hardons for South America?

They want to stamp out any leftist government, wherever it may be.  Successful leftist governments could possibly serve as a model or inspiration to Americans, and we obviously can't have that.

Americans have historically looked to Bolivia for inspiration.

They should.  What Evo has accomplished is remarkable.  Why do you think the right has always been obsessed with crushing every leftist government in Latin America?  It's not all about the oil or lithium or whatever resources may be in play.  They view those governments as a virus that must be killed off before it's allowed to spread.

It's not hard to get a wide range of information very quickly using the power of the World Wide Web. It's free and very easy to get a broad swath of perspectives.

Go read CommonDreams, Salon, FAIR and many other sources. Listen to Democracy Now. Consume media that isn't mass produced by corporate elites. It won't hurt, I promise.

Evo Morales was going to nationalize lithium mining so that the profits would stay in Bolivia.

In a right-wing military junta, those natural resources will just be sold to the highest bidder to exploit as they wish. That will be a Western firm (or set of firms).

This stuff isn't all that complicated if you care to read a little.

Are you telling me that Americans care more about an American election than a Bolivian election?

Yes, but that's not really the point.

Why do they feel the need to jump in and run interference? They actually do care to some extent, but about what?

Given that you don't appear to care, why do you keep posting in this thread?  Surely Trump has said something stupid on twitter today that you can post about.
