The Return Of Kaepernick?

RPM

Recommended Posts

Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick will participate in the workout Saturday, and the NFL is making sure all 32 teams are invited.

Kaepernick, 32, hasn’t played in the NFL since the 2016 season, when he began taking a knee during the national anthem to protest racial injustice and police brutality in the United States. He posted a 16-4 touchdown-to-interception ratio in 12 games, hit free agency in the offseason and went unsigned.

Since then, Kaepernick filed a lawsuit against the NFL alleging collusion. The two sides settled that lawsuit in February. Kaepernick has made it clear he would love to return to the NFL, and has been training to stay in shape. Though there are plenty of reasons to question the NFL’s handling of Saturday’s workout, it will mark the first time since the 2016 season Kaepernick will throw for teams.

Given the state of quarterbacking around the league, there should be significant interest in scouting Kaepernick during the workout. Some teams have already confirmed they’ll have people in attendance. Others are keeping their intentions close to the vest.

Below, you’ll find a list of every team that has commented on Kaepernick’s workout thus far, and whether those teams plan to attend the event.

Teams planning to attend Kaepernick’s workout:

Atlanta Falcons - Head coach Dan Quinn told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution said he’s “sure that we will” have a scout at the workout. Starter Matt Ryan returned to action in Week 10 after missing time with an injury. Matt Schaub is the team’s backup.

Cincinnati Bengals - The Bengals plan to evaluate Kaepernick’s workout, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. At 0-9, the Bengals are the worst team in the NFL. Veteran Andy Dalton was benched prior to Week 10 so the team could get a closer look at Ryan Finley.

Dallas Cowboys - Reports suggest the Cowboys will have someone watching Kaepernick on Saturday. Starter Dak Prescott is having a strong season, but his contract expires at the end of the year. Cooper Rush is the team’s backup.

Denver Broncos - Multiple reporters have confirmed the Broncos will send a scout to watch Kaepernick throw. The team lost starter Joe Flacco to a neck injury and draft pick Drew Lock returned to practice Monday after he was sidelined all season with a thumb injury.

Detroit Lions - Head coach Matt Patricia confirmed the Lions would send someone to the workout. Matthew Stafford missed the team’s game in Week 10 due to a back injury. Jeff Driskel started in Stafford’s place in a 20-13 loss to the Chicago Bears. Stafford has vowed to return to action soon.

Miami Dolphins - Head coach Brian Flores confirmed the Dolphins would have a representative at the event. Flores told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel the Dolphins like their quarterbacks right now, but want to do their “due diligence” on Kaepernick. At 68.7, the Dolphins have the worst passer rating in the NFL.

New England Patriots - Bill Belichick answered a question about Kaepernick in his usual brusk manner, telling reporters he wasn’t sure if the Patriots would attend the workout. Though Belichick wouldn’t give an answer, the team is reportedly going to have someone at the workout.

New York Giants - The Giants will reportedly send someone to Kaepernick’s workout. The team has turned the keys over the rookie first-round pick Daniel Jones, but could be looking for a veteran to help Jones out if 38-year-old Eli Manning leaves in the offseason.

New York Jets - Head coach Adam Gase avoided the question, saying he was focused on the team’s upcoming game against Washington. The Jets have gone 2-7 under Gase and have the lowest yards per game among any offense in football. Rich Cimini of ESPN reported the team will have someone at the workout.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Head coach Bruce Arians said he expects someone from the organization to be at Kaepernick’s workout. Bucs starter Jameis Winston will be a free agent in the offseason.

Teams that haven’t given definitive answers about Kaepernick’s workout:

Carolina Panthers - Ron Rivera passed the buck when asked about Kaepernick. Rivera said since it was a personnel decision, reporters would have to speak with general manager Marty Hurney about the matter.

Chicago Bears - Head coach Matt Nagy avoided the question Wednesday, telling reporters he wasn’t sure whether the team would send anyone to watch Kaepernick and that general manager Ryan Pace would make that decision. Pace did not make himself available to media Wednesday.

Washington Redskins - The D.C. football team is sending mixed messages about Kaepernick. Head coach Bill Callahan said he didn’t think Washington was sending anyone to see Kaepernick throw. Sources told the Washington Post a team employee will be there for Kaepernick’s workout.

Los Angeles Rams - When asked if they would send a representative, a spokesperson for the Rams declined to comment.

Guy was given 2 hours to accept or reject an offer that was non-negotiable as far as time and place. What a disingenuous attempt to "let him back in the league".

It’s more than any NFL team has been willing to do for him in the past three years.

I don’t believe the NFL is stopping any team from holding future workouts.

This is a put up or shut up proposition

Oh yeah I am sure you can just skip half the season and training camp and walk right on the field after missing two seasons. I guess this is for an offseason acquisition for somebody?

I mean presuming he can still play, hard to take this much time off in your 30s in this sport.

Lol at this "he just wasn't good enough anymore" narrative. Just stop it. He took a political stance that made people uncomfortable and made everyone not wanna employ him.

Just like Morey in the NBA. Still interested to see if they find some BS reason to can him.

Well he was a backup at the time. It has been awhile so I don't remember how that came about.

For some reason I have a modified version of a Mark Morrison song in my head.

I care more about if you remembered Mark Morrison or did you have to google it? Guess the artist sure made road trips seem much shorter except when we realized my dad had the entire playlist from Jack fm memorized.

Pretty much, but he falls in an interesting category. If he were a little bit better, it wouldn't even be a question -- help your team win, you can get away with anything from unpopular opinions to murder-that-the-DA-is-having-a-hard-time-pinning-on-you.  If he were a little bit worse, it wouldn't even be a question -- he wouldn't get a tryout at all.

But no, he has to be somewhere in the middle ground:  Not a top tier QB, but obviously better than some of the trash they've got starting on a half-dozen or so pathetic franchises. At least it makes media outlets happy.

I apologize for being a disappointment, google was my friend.

Did he get injured or was he just not integral to the Niners success?

He lost his starting job to Blaine gabbert didn’t he? He wasn’t doing shit and got benched. Then started this shit. Fuck his sorry ass. If he’s been “working out and staying ready” as he claims, then the workout should go pretty good for him. But again, no one wants to give top dollar for an average at best clown show qb to be a back up. If he’d swallow his pride and say fuck it, I’ll sign for the league minimum or go to the CFL, he has a better chance.

I looked up his numbers, not great. Seems like he was a pretty good scrambler when needed but wasn't terribly accurate though he wasn't a turnover machine. Probably a decent game manager but not somebody who'll take you too far.

In 2015, he was benched for Blaine Gabbert 8 games in.  That team ended up 5-11.  2-6 with Kaepernick as the starter.

In 2016, the year he started kneeling, Gabbert was the starter at the beginning of the year.  Niners ended up 2-14 that year.  So he started the year as the second string QB on the shittiest team in the league.  He ended the year as the starter for the shittiest team in the league.

I'm not so naive as to believe this is all about football, but perhaps, if he had gone out on a little more of a high note, there might be more demand.

To whom would one address a poorly grammared racist ranting letter to express outrage? Asking for a bunch of fake "patriot" wannabes.

I think you could probably leave out the racist parts of the rant and still attract a good number of individuals who would affix their mark. Because America - love it or leave it, there's nothing wrong here.

But he's been trying to redefine the game, becoming a specialist similar to a closing pitcher in baseball.  He'd be perfect for running out the clock with a lead, but how do you quantify that in a stat?

I'm all for free speech. I'm also for mocking those who exercise it in silly ways.

Ray Lewis: Ravens backed off on Colin Kaepernick after girlfriend's 'racist' tweet

Former Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis said that his former team was close to signing quarterback Colin Kaepernick before the free agent's girlfriend posted a tweet ridiculing Lewis and Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti.

"We were going to close the deal to sign him," Lewis said on Showtime's Inside the NFL on Tuesday night. "Steve Bisciotti said, 'I want to hear Colin Kaepernick speak to let me know that he wants to play football.' And it never happens because that picture comes up the next day."

The Aug. 2 tweet by Nessa Diab, which Lewis described as "racist," compared a picture of Lewis hugging Bisciotti to a scene from Django Unchained

"(Diab) goes out and put out this racist gesture and doesn't know we are in the back office about to try to get this guy signed," Lewis said.

This would be the equivalent of someone wearing floral flip flops to a honky tonk.

I'd be fine with him as a backup to Dak. Cooper Rush would struggle in the arena league (if it still existed) because he sucks.

It would top off a season in which the Cowboys sugned Michael Bennett.  And kept Jason Garrett.

lolz.  That ain’t glory hole by any stretch, Jerrah.

Last I heard, he wasn't signed after leaving the 49'ers because he wanted starter money and nobody was even willing to discuss that for someone who would come in as a backup (maybe a backups backup)
Unless he is willing to sit somewhere and wait for an injury or a starter to suck, like really suck, then nobody wants to pay him what he wanted from the 9'ers.

Kaep fucked himself when he opted out of his final year in SF where he would've been paid 14.5 million dollars. Nobody was going to break the bank for a controversial backup QB plagued by accuracy issues. I personally have nothing against the guy, I'm just tired of hearing his name relentlessly the last three years. He's 32 years old and hasn't played in years, I don't know what he could even bring to a NFL franchise at this point in the season. I wonder if this is a publicity move by the NFL, if it was part of the settlement or if Nike's money was talking, but this is a very bizarre turn of events.
