Last Jedi Was So Bad I Only Saw It Twice

Y'all are still being dumbasses.

Just because you don't like a movie doesn't make it a bad movie, and nobody is coming up with a reason why it is bad filmmaking other than "HERP DERP DISNEY PAID OFF THE CRITICS DURRHURRR" all while, I must presume, having to wipe the drool off of your keyboards.

Or "look at Luke drinking blue milk from this gross creature" and going as far as saying "this ends all debate." My God, do you even have synapses in your brain that are capable of firing? Do you still think Tom Herman can coach football? Have you ever been on stage at the Jerry Springer show?

Or pointing out that the physical media sales are off the charts (not even including digital) and folks are trying to spin doctor that shit into "nobody liked it" -- or saying "Oh, just because people liked it doesn't mean it was good because the critics" OH WAIT...

Here's what's going to happen.

Episode IX is going to come out, and people are going to say something infinitely stupid. What they're going to say is something like, "I can't believe that movie salvaged the shit-show that was Episode VIII." It's stupid, because the whole point of Episode VIII was to set Episode IX up, to raise doubts and fears and make the major characters have to get through some bad shit -- much of it self-inflicted -- so that they can become the people they need to be in order to do what they have to do in the final third of the trilogy. And, news flash, Luke isn't one of the major characters. He already had his trilogy.

At the risk of a good nut kicking, I liked TLJ but I see its faults and acknowledge why others didn't like it. I'm confused by the visceral reaction to it but whatever. To each his own. Solo though is a way more enjoyable. People really should give it a chance and it sucked that it got swept up in the dislike others had for TLJ. I'd rather see 10 more Solos than another sequel trilogy movie. It's a lot more reminiscent of a Star Wars movie than TLJ was. It's not Rogue One but it's a very enjoyable movie.

no way rimbo is serious.  no one is that stupid.

saw solo.  the dude who plays han is annoying as fuck.  flick is ok.  kids thought it sucked, not TLJ suckitude, nothing will ever approach that shitbag.  wasn't sold with any of the performances of the actors.  like TLJ, solo is a once only viewing.  i guess fortunately, i don't wish that i could un-see solo like i do with TLJ.

Odd, because I feel the same way about you.

If people were saying "I didn't like it" and left it at that, there'd be something there. But when you take "I didn't like it" a step further to the point of "It was bad," then -- no, I'm not the one being stupid, here.

Now, I'm being an idiot by being an asshole in this thread, yes. Granted, guilty as charged. But this thread started with a stupid idea, and echo chambered itself into even further stupidity. I'm just joining the chorus of stupidity y'all already began.

Now, if y'all were interested and capable of discussing the movie intelligently, I'd be happy to engage in that with something approaching intelligence. But this doesn't seem to be the thread for that sort of thing. This is a thread where stark-raving mad idiots froth at the mouth about how "dislike" = "bad", and I come in and laugh at you for making the same kind of brain fart that most of us outgrew when we turned 14.

I rewatched some of the red letter media review and it reminded me of what I was thinking as I watched the movie.  I picked up on the “subverting expectations” thing as I was watching but ended up confused by this:

“Oh. Interesting. The rebels are being led by someone clearly incompetent.  That’s interesting and something that hasn’t been done before. ...

[fast forward 20 minutes in the movie]

... wait I was supposed to think Holdo was good at her job?”

Its like my subverted exectations were subverted.  Nice one Rian.   My brain couldn’t quite put together her nonsense motivations and actions and interpreted that as some element of the story.  Then it just disappeared again by the end.

what is there to discuss intelligently?  it was a shitty script directed by a shitty director.  you're the only fanboy on surly who loves this movie.  most everyone fucking hates it.  so either you're the genius or you're the fucking idiot.  we all know the answer to that.  again, you're not the smartest guy in the room, but you keep up the schtick.  so it has to be trolling at this point.  no other explanation.

I was thinking Holdo was a spy that helped track the ships and was there to sabotage things while Leia was down. You could have had Rose, Finn and Poe figure it out together. Maybe Finn get accused because he was a storm trooper, or something interesting like that.

That's where I thought they were going with it. I thought she was put there by Hux and that's why he was so confident in his plan. Unfortunately, that is not where they were going with that.

or you can have had Holdo fatally stab Rose in the cunt and then Rey shows back up and slices Holdo's head off, Dooku style, and throws it down the garbage chute...win win

You should have known the moment she stepped on screen that she was going to be the wise responsible female in the face of the reckless male. That was the least surprising reveal of 2017.

Doesn't Holdo say something like "He's cute" to Leia talking about Poe and his space mutiny?

She says, "I like him" moments before his half-assed casino plan leads a blatantly duplicitous hacker to give up the location of their escape pods to the Empire/First Order (something to the effect of "I pushed the de-cloaking button on our scanners, Admiral Hux") and slaughter 99% of the republic/rebellion/resistance/whatever.

It's okay though, Leia gives him total command control soon after.

Solo was fun to watch, but very choppy. Definitely felt like different directors had say over different scenes. It wasn't terrible, but nothing too memorable. I kind of wish they had gone with the original director's idea and just made it funny instead of half funny, half serious and kinda dark. It was muddled due to rewrites, reshoots and changing directors, and it shows.

Rimbo, everyone knows you're trolling because, even if you are legitimately one of the few people who found enough positive virtues to enjoy this film (which would be fine), you and I both know that it's not a movie worth dying on a hill over.

I like some universally panned movies more than the masses (Terminator Salvation is the first that comes to mind), but I wouldn't go all out defending it because I'm smart enough to see the many, many, many faults that put everyone else off and simply appreciate it on my own despite its shortcomings.

The only people going all out in defense of TLJ are trolls and people looking to laud their superior progressiveness over the "fanbois" who clearly must hate this movie for all the womenz and minorities, not because it's an objectively poorly directed, edited, produced, and written borefest of plot holes and stupidity for the sake of story progression. I guess troll is the better option?

Finally watched Solo. Enjoyed it. Could have been better, but it was more enjoyable than The Last Jedi. They could have done a better job casting Han. Every time I looked away from the screen and heard his voice, I thought, "Is that Ed Helms?"

Just gonna leave this here.

https://www.indiewire.com/2018/10/oscar-isaac-star-wars-episode-ix-break-at-eternitys-gate-1202011808/

Quote

“The way they’ve been shooting it right now is looser than it’s been for the last two times,” he said, clarifying that Abrams has been allowing more improvisation on the set. “It does feel like a relief to get on set and feel like, ‘Oh, we can try things.’ It’s a testament to J.J. coming back and feeling confident. There’s less pressure for it to be right. We just want to make a good movie and have a really good time while doing it.”

He joked that the improvisatory quality of the production was like “Cassavetes in space,” but said it came naturally to the production. “Often, you do feel like you’ve got to find your way to make something more alive, but this time, it’s been the opposite,” he said. “There’s no need to smuggle anything in there.”

Wait...the reason a lot people didn't like TLJ is because Johnson "tried new things".  He didn't feel the need to stick to the status quo of SW movies.

Johnson can’t grasp the fact that a shit ton of people went to see the movie, and a shit load of people thought it was shit.

He equates sales to quality. It can’t be bad because it made so much money. I’m awesome and everyone is a hater.

His ego won’t let him see that Jimmy Fallon could have directed and the same amount of people would show.

That's a basically oversimplified version of it. But at this point, I'm the wrong person in this particular echo chamber of stupidity to express that there is, at its core, a good reason for the hate.

It's not that an actual GOOD reason doesn't exist for people to dislike it. But you won't see it expressed here, on this thread, by these people.

I didn't like it because the ending sucked and didn't feel like star wars. Everyone went from serious in TFA to morons. Po was the not the same Po from TFA. Fin was about the same. HUX lost all respect between the 2 movies and was a joke.

The worst part is all the mystery from TFA was GONE. Where did snoke come from? The lightsaber? Who are the knights of ren? Who was that old dude at the beginning? The republic? C3P0's red arm????

I feel like it's a big FUCK YOU from Disney. TLJ didn't explain shit. It just glossed over all that shit from TFA. What is 9 gonna be about anyway? Kylo vs Rey again? Thats all that's left to tell and felt like a huge waste similar to TFA.

I don't even give a shit what happens next but I'll still go see 9 first viewing because why not.

Well that was a bit of an overreaction, but okay.

Also, to be fair, there were a shit ton of people who went to see the movie and didn't think it was shit either.  It's divisive for a reason.

IX will probably define how a lot of those people feel about TLJ.  Abrams didn’t leave notes or anything for the TLJ director about where he intended characters and arcs to go, and it sounds like Abrams is being pretty loose with IX, so I don’t hold out much hope.

i get that Abrams is a safe choice, or was at the time, but I still don’t see how they could just start making 7-9 without a concrete plan for all three.

Marvel has been able to plan out 20+ movies, while giving numerous and varied directors plenty of room to do their thing, so that they all feed into a major movie every few years.

Kennedy really needs to be fired for not being able to have a serious roadmap for three films.   Abrams should of have been brought back for not having anything planned after TFA.   Leaving it up to the next director to figure out was never going to work well.

Say what you want about the prequels,  Lucas had a starting point and ending point, even if he threw a lot of filler in, and didn’t know how he wanted to get from Point A to B.

Yeah, I think Rian totally shit the bed and I will never be ok with Luke being a pussy and a quitter.  That being said, I think he might have done a better job if Kennedy didn't have her head completely jammed up her ass.

You need a coherent vision for a trilogy.  Especially for one that has as deep and rich of a backstory as Star Wars.  Marvel, like the Russians, don't take a dump without a plan and it has paid off for them in spades.  Instead of following that model, Kennedy handed the reins to JJ and let him do his thing.  Which is to copy the crap out of stuff we've seen before while throwing in his mystery boxes.  That would have worked if the next guy she brought in was under strict rules to pay all of JJ's stuff off and keep the train on the tracks.  Instead, she let Rian go hog wild.  He didn't do a good job AND it didn't match up with TFA.  You don't hand the keys over to a guy like him smack dab in the middle of your trilogy if you're going to let him veer off into crazy town.

Of course then you tack on the Trevorrow firing, rehiring JJ (too little, too late), the nonsense with the original directors on Solo and its subsequent bombing, etc., and I just keep wondering why Kennedy still has a job.

Though really, what is anyone really expecting at this point?  You aren't getting the magic of the OT back.  Star Wars is now a corporatized cash cow and ain't no one doing it for the love of Star Wars (except maybe Filoni).  Disney certainly ain't.  The best you can hope for is a movie that is above average and "feels" like Star Wars.  Except w/ TLJ those folks have shown they don't give a shit about that, either.  Luke Skywalker is one of the most iconic characters in film history and they just shat all over him.  Chewbacca is there just to boost toy sales.  Any interest in the main storyline movies I have is over.  All I hope is that occasionally a really talented director will get the chance to make a spinoff that shines.

Lengthy documented bullshittery has been given. Contorted logic and bizarre attempts to ignore facts have been written. Strange personal attacks have been justified. Plot holes that really aren't plot holes have been expounded upon endlessly. But the big picture is largely being ignored in a weird, cult-like attempt to justify the nonsensical conclusion: "It is a bad movie because I did not enjoy it."

In short, almost zero "good, in depth reasons" have been expressed here. The one or two that have, have not been agreed to by this weird particular corner of Star Wars fandom on the internet that by and large insists that Kennedy is some vile demon determined to SJW the franchise, cackling at us while peering over a copy of Our Bodies, Ourselves.

It's very simple: Movies and other works of art are not bad or good based on whether or not you, me, or anyone else enjoys them. And no amount of "here's a link to some guy who agrees with me" or "here is some lengthy tautology" changes any of that.

I can find plenty of other corners of the internet where there is equally-ridiculous levels of love of Episode 8, who would portray those who didn't like it as being WRONG. (And they are wrong to say that.) And I can find a handful of corners of the internet where actual, intelligent discussion of the movie happens. This is not either of those.
