Cameron U. is in Lawton, there's no university in Metairie, and Rexburg is home to BYU-Idaho.

So... yeah.

Yeah I had to look them up too. I'm guessing they are saying UNO for Metairie, but it really isn't in Metairie but closer to Lakeview. Rexburg, ID is 95% LDS according to Wikipedia so I'm going to have to pass on that one.

UNLV laughs at this. Reno is a shithole.

UNLV is a massive commuter school with next to no on campus housing and it is not like any decent student there is out in the casinos or the over priced clubs every night

any college student that can afford to live the "Vegas lifestyle" while in school can afford to go to some other better university with a much better atmosphere and academic reputation and then go to Vegas on the weekends and holidays for "Vegas baby"

and Reno has a lot of outdoor activities and things like that much more so than Vegas and much more of what an average college student would be doing

and Reno and Vegas are the only two choices in Nevada  unless you are going to count Henderson

I bet they excluded any "town" where there's literally anything else going on other than college.

Not even that really. Madison, Reno, Honolulu, Knoxville, Flagstaff, Anchorage, SLO and Providence are all more than just a college town. It's really a terrible list with no rhyme or reason. I'm surprised they didn't put Beaumont for Texas.

Elko?   I spent a week there one night.
some of those cities are literally the second or third largest cities in those states.  You can’t call that a “college town”

there’s about ten on there I think we could all categorically agree on, another 20 you could debate in circles and the last 20 are just unabashed pieces of shit that have no business hosting colleges, let alone people

There isn't even a college worth mentioning in Rochester, MN. Yes the U is trying to mooch in on Mayo's expansion plans, but other than the tech college, there's nothing there.

I was wondering about Rochester. I've been to Mayo for family members and had a cousin go to medical school there, but I never noticed a regular college.  Sioux Falls has a couple of small private schools and the city officials bitch about not having a public university there.  The story is that the city leaders in the 1800s had a choice between the first public university and the state prison.  Naturally, they chose the prison.

Are you fucking high or do not know that Charleston is in South Carolina.

Yeh, I'm vaguely aware of its presence. Charleston isn't really a college town IMO.  There are colleges there for sure, but Charleston is the draw, not the colleges.

My metric is a college town that dominates the scene. Blacksburg, and Charlottesville fit that bill better than Charleston. I've had some great times in Charleston for sure, but I've had better college days times in Columbia.

Methodology

We gathered a list of college towns and narrowed it down to cities with fewer than 250,000* residents. We kept in mind that the metro areas surrounding the smaller towns would also include the student population.

Using data from the United States Census Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, we analyzed overall population, student population, rental costs, college education rates, transportation access, unemployment rates, and bar availability.

From there, we narrowed it down further by weighing the cost of living, unemployment rates for 20–24 year olds, and easy access to the city.

*Maine, Hawaii, and Alaska did not have college towns with a population of less than 250K that met our criteria, so they are the exceptions.

That explains a lot.

Uh, CofC is the dominant feature of Charleston's social scene.

Columbia's biggest feature is being the capital of the state, it's less of a college town than Richmond is.

Five points is a great college bar scene.  Group therapy is one of the best college bars I've forgotten what I did.

Damaged ?  Oh hell yeah, but I expect different things from different venues.  I'm not going to Charleston for the college town experience   Cofc have a football team  ?  No football, no great college scene.  We all have our metrics.

State College over Pittsburgh/Philly?
aggy made this map.

Is Pittsburgh and Philly college towns? I get they have Pitt and Temple but I don't think of those as college towns. Or any really huge city for that matter.

Precisely. NYC has colleges, but it's not a college town. A great college town is the town that lives thru the school it surrounds IMO.  Pittsburgh is an NFL, NHL town anyway.
