spouses/family & politics

I stopped talking politics/religion with family/friends years ago. My dad and I will get into the occasional phone debate, and I like to think I've reeled him a bit to the left due to that. He's all on board for pot legalization, where 5 years ago, he was at the polar opposite for that. I consider that a win.

Is it too political to talk to or about family members, or their kids, wrt how overweight they have allowed themselves or their kids to become?  While it crosses all party lines, of course, it seems like weight issues can or could have just as much strife if you were to suggest that maybe they or their teenage kids could do with better evercise/diet management?  We have some cousins who are hefty in their own right but apparently didn't teach their daughter or son proper portion control at minimum.

We don't talk about it, or haven't yet,  but holy shit.  What say y'all?

It’s interesting you say that because I’ve mostly turned off political chatter with family.  They used to look to me for insight and suggestions but many Of them went their own way to one extreme.  Now I’m lame and just admit that I play both sides when it benefits my platform.

But one thing that is so hard for us to bite our tongue is my older sister and mom and how they are just fattening up my nephew.  My brother in law is a super guy and heady himself but always wants to do right by his only son.  But my Sister and mother are just destroying this kid.  He’s about average height at 12, but he’s probably pushing 170 or so.  He has trouble academically because my sister has him exclusively focused on private sports leagues, clothes, tech, and popularity because we grew up on free teams, tj maxx clothes, and no cable.  But rest of us keep our fucking mouth shut but I really worry the kid is gonna be bullied as he’s now in middle school and beyond.   But we don’t say a peep.  My cousin and I made one comment to mymother who force feeds the kid crap, about two years ago and she blew up.

anyway thanks for bringing this up.  Nobody ever changed anybody’s mind on politics or religion at the holidays but this is something I’d like to help on but I won’t ever say a fucking word.  He’s a sweet and cute kid but between being really fat and really behind academically; I worry what happens to Him in a few years.  Your peer group influences the first third Of your life way more than who the president is does

Unsolicited parenting advice will always go over like a turd in the punch bowl.  I've dipped a toe in the water with one of my best friends - a guy who I could always tell that he was getting fat or that his girlfriend was lousy without ruffling feathers.  He politely told me to fuck off and I did, will never say anything to him about it again.

It's a bummer because I don't want my kids to see how their kids act and get away with it and that puts a strain on a 30 year old friendship.  I can't abide wilful disobedience or nasty tone of voice while speaking to a parent in a child.

Completely how I feel, and I'd never say shit to a friend or even distant relative.  Granted, she's my half-sister, but her and my mother are completely to blame for this.  I'm not around them a lot, certainly not enough to have opened my mouth in all the years past.  I think I can at least breech the topic with my mother again.  But yeah, it's a lose-lose.  But in the end, do you want to hear from a relative or CPS that you're morbidly obese child is 60 pounds overweight heading into 7th grade?

If it was obesity and one of my sister's kids, I'd have a real hard time not making some side-eye comments every once in a while - "Ole Johnny should mix in a little low-cal salad dressing every once in a while, eh?"

Letting (or encouraging) a kid get overweight is such a horrible thing to let happen to a young child.  Unless there are other health issues at play that contribute to the weight gain, it's something that can be curbed and will create such headwinds for that child the rest of their life.

Again, good points.  Sorry to derail this thread, but it's pretty much related.  I mean, how do we try to convince one another of political or religious shit which is just make believe mental panaceas but we can actually effectuate real change with small humans and we just skip that part because society says it's not okay for that kinda shit but let's totally get drunk and yell about Trump and Pelosi?

I don't think there's any other health issues at play.  I mean, he's obviously got his parents crappy metabolism (I have a touch of it, too).  But they just focus on him being good at football and the kid who hangs out under the hoop the whole game in basketball because he's 2 inches taller than the other kids so they think he's an athlete who needs to "carb up" before practice to the tune of 3,000+ calories each PM.  And if he was smart as a tack, it would be one thing.  But I feel bad for him because he's so far behind in school.  Then you add the weight issue, I dunno.  I just know I ain't saying shit this holiday season, as per usual.  But I think next year, I need to at least tell my mom that everytime she picks him up from school/practice (6 days/week), the Big mac combo at McDonald's should be a one-off reward at the end of the month, not the multi-times-per-month ritual.

Thanks for letting me rant, this is so much more important to me than trying to convince family their voting choices are idiotic.  This kid is at the precipice of being stuck like this for life if he doesn't change soon, he'll end up like his 300 pound parents.  But he's inquisitive and sweet and kind and I don't want that for him.  /rant.

Yes, that's a tough situation for sure.  Like I said, my relationship with my sister is such that I could say something about that situation and know in my heart that I was doing the right thing by the kid.  ESPECIALLY if it involved letting her kids eat McDonald's multiple times per week.  That's borderline child abuse if you have the means to afford healthier options.  The kid would be a much better athlete if he wasn't carrying around a bunch of extra weight, maybe that's the way that you could approach the conversation.  Today's college/professional athletes sure as shit aren't eating McDonald's all the time.

This is actually important, two of my younger cousins are very fat, and seems to have no drive in them. My aunt who just had heart attack last year is morbidly obese. She seems to not care about thier physical well beings.

My aunt told me a few days ago how the younger one of the two is actually showering and brushing her teeth since she started doing some office job thing at her highschool. It's gross, and I don't understand why she let it happen.

No offense, but some football coaches aren't nutritional wunderkinds when it comes to advising youth. The triple chin is a thing at my youngest child's school. Some schools have athletic trainers that are more savvy (if you can stay away from the ones that sell supplements on the side-not talking steroids here but the regular supplements). It's a tricky age for appropriate dietary restrictions because he is still growing, but his nutrition needs to be smarter. Perhaps the suggestion that under the guise of an athletic trainer (that is up to date on nutrition) he could improve his athletic prowess?

An anecdotal reference: a young man that was part of a group I volunteered with had a similar physique. We had quite a few chats and I discovered he liked to think of himself as 'strong,' because he was big and in some ways, it had kind of boxed him in (mentally). I steered him towards thinking about field events (he was in middle school) because I knew the T&F coach from my kids and knew he was very diligent about having the athletes eat healthy and have anaerobic and aerobic conditioning. Hardly recognize the young man now, he is still a big fella and was always going to be big and tall, but he is solid. The HS coach was pretty happy how that turned out.

I don’t understand.... are you saying that your cousin is NOW showering and brushing her teeth because of a job (implying that she didn’t before - barf) or that your aunt now has a job and your cousin is showering her (your aunt - barf again) and brushing her teeth (your aunt - less barf, more sad / why?)?

None of these situations are good and I await your answer in disgust either way.

We have no need to talk politics in our family. In my youth I held youthful ideals learnt from the dueling society layabouts, such as "Free the Peasants." "Free them from WHAT," crowed Grandmother, "If they become free, they'll only drink, which they accomplish magnificently as matters stand." I resented it at the time, but several years with private tutors (hard men, fair men, Prussian veterans, several of them) whipped such whimsies out of me.

Father, of course, died wenching, and not from a bear. Mother's phrenologist diagnosed her with depressed sublimity, leaving me in charge of her priests, mummified monkey-dolls, and the workings of the entire estate. Brother was blinded in his laboratory-- who could have known he'd light a bunsen burner next to the parcel of 76.2mm mortar shells?-- and therefore could not inherit. Sister spent a month of her Grand Tour "working" as an actress in Baden-Baden, and though later properly married off to a chinless apothecary, seems unlikely to conceive.

So no, politics are quite settled in our family.

RDC posts always comes through.

If it's the company of everyone, that shit'll get shut down at our house faster than the NFL can tell they Cowboys they trippin...

If they don't want the family correcting their kid, don't let them act like little shits.   And yes, it IS the parents' fault, so the shame game is in play there...

I feel like the big news here is that people actually seek out TheCruiser/Lobo for guidance and insight.

Assuming he doesn’t corner the relative, start pontificating about something useless, name dropping as he goes, and ends his pointless humblebrag with an obscure movie quote.

the discussion went from family politics to fat kids.

which reminds me of how Michelle Obama was savaged, including right her on this very board (by some that are posting on this thread) for trying to make school lunches healthier and for trying to get kids from in front of the TV and outside moving around some.

Politics of fat kids.

But hey, "Be Best", that's better than improving school lunches, right?

I am married to an ignorant Trumper.  She eats up crap on FB & re-shares along with her older sister, Dad & mom + any other Trumper on her friends list.

& I am not joking here, she adamantly believes the Clintons were part of the pizza parlor basement child porn dungeon thing.

She will hop onto anything on FB without even the slightest regard to fact checking, yet if quizzed probably cannot tell you which of the bicameral bodies is based on population vs. X per state (& couldn't tell you how MANY = X).

I usually only have to accept 2 or 3 idiot offhanded comments from her family @ Thanksgiving.  Saturday during the Longhorns debacle @ Baylor, my FIL made a "Who cares, that's just 2 n - - - - - s hitting each other" type comment.  I don't recall the context because that's not the important part.

A side comment like that could go over worse than a heart-to-heart talk about it. I would think that spending more alone time with the overweight kids would be the best option. One, you can control their food choices somewhat, and two they might open up if they are concerned about their own weight. The latter invites you to educate them on choosing lower calorie options.

Sister and BIL are full blown Cowboy Churchers which translates to Trumpers. We haven't talked much the last year or so and I don't have their current take on impeachment, but whatever is on Missouri AM talkradio is likely their pov. Sis thinks Hillary is the Devil incarnate and is huge into Facebook. BIL is a Duck Dynasty wannabe. They're successful and I love them. I just worry about them and what they may be capable of.

Fat families don't think they're fat.  Their self awareness is almost zero on the subject.  They're not fat, they're just a "little overweight."  It's genetics, too, they say, as they shovel more pie down.

Good luck bringing that up.

Yeah, I had a friend who would complain about how hard it is to lose weight and then stop at Dairy Queen for a blizzard immediately afterwards on the way to wherever the group was going to hang out next. Like, seriously? Maybe losing weight isn't easy for everybody, but maybe cut back on the crap like that and see what happens. I think it's kinda a teaching an old dog new tricks thing where they never had anybody really teach them self control and healthy eating, so they have to completely alter their lifestyle in order to get into shape.

I’m too lazy to google. What is a cowboy church? Is it a church for rednecks? Is that it?

Or do you have to abide by a certain set of principals / dogma?

Is it a distinct branch of Protestantism....

In a fractured body politic, it's the one thing we can all come to the center on. Fat kids are too damn fat. It's especially fun to think about at a harvest feast.

A while back I was sitting near two young women, maybe 19-20 years old. (The judge made me relinquish cameras as part of my deal, sorry.) They seem kind of typical suburban-acting-a-little-country. One is on the razor's edge of going from healthy to chunk, the other is halfway to potato already, beady eyes receding into her face. Reconstructed conversation:

Razor's Edge: "I decided I could eat Mac and Cheese all day. I don't want green stuff."

Beady Eyes: "The only food I like is mashed potatoes. I never eat any other vegetable."

Razor's Edge: "Do you like salads? I'm not crazy about salads."

Beady Eyes: "Nope, just mashed potatoes. Maybe chicken nuggets."

Razor's Edge: "Mmm, chicken nuggets."

I had to get up, leave the room, and walk outside. Truth is, those two probably eat healthier than half of America. Since then, Beady Eyes is running stable (maybe tried mixing beans or corn into the mashed potatoes), and Razor's Edge actually came back from the precipice, looks like she hits the gym some. Hope she's not sick.

Honestly, the idea that someone could be married to a Trumper or even a Republican is just baffling to me, which has caused me to rethink how open minded I really am.

I think 20, even 10 years ago, I could see marrying a Republican, but I couldn't fathom living with someone who hasn't written all that shit off by now.

*And yes, undefeated, but that has to be some rose smelling, go to the gym everyday non-sagging undefeated.

You have to take into account the two grand illusions of relationships:

1. Women think they can change the man.

2. Men think the woman won't change.

So in your case, she wouldn't be a Republican when you meet her. Her parents would, but she hates them. She's all Patti Hearst minus the crime scenes, smoking your pot, dragging your ass to music festivals, getting kinky with you which is why you tolerate her couch-surfing friends. Then a bell rings, she chops off all her hair so she looks just like her Reaganite mom, and BAM all this old shit that you like has to go on the curb while she hires contractors to commit atrocities to the house that you paid for because that's what her Instagram feed showed her.

The GF voted for Trump.  She's now 100% aware that he's an unfit asshole, and claims she'll never vote for him again.

Mom and Dad, despite being dems for as long as I can remember, voted Trump.   Mom is in her 80's and spends all day on facebook.  She's becoming meaner and racist as she ages.  She's still on the Trump Train.

Dad (Marine) has turned on Trump since the thing with the Kurds, and now the war criminal thing.  Kids in cages didn't do it.  5000 lies didn't do it.  Finally, something did it.

I'm honestly worried about them.  My mom absorbs disinformation and takes it as gospel, and spews it at my dad, and some of it sticks.  I get so fucking pissed about it.  They take the local paper in their town, and it's Pro-Trump.  I got them a subscription to the L.A. Times, hoping a dose of real news could help, but my Dad only read the sports, and my mom the insert ads from the stores.

The best example I can give of my mom and her facebook  BS:  She's convinced that Obama ordered the flags to half-staff after Whitney Houston's death.  Seriously.  Like most facebook lies, there's a tiny grain of truth.  Chris Christie ordered them lowered at state buildings in NJ, where she was from.

Meanwhile, GF's mom, a lovely woman, thinks Trump is an asshole, but she will vote for him again, because "the economy".  She thinks it was horrible before Trump was elected (she's been retired 40 years).  I  have tried to tell her about the massive improvements under Obama, but she thinks I'm either making it up or sadly mistaken.  She lives in FL.  She was out here recently, and mentioned something about watching a new channel called OANN.    She's not on social media at all.

These last few posts bring up some things about olds and the internet.

When I was trying to teach my 80-something year old Dad how to google things, I could not stop him from paying attention to the ads and dreck in the margins.  I began to understand how people that grew up with the internet learn to ignore commercial and other crap to get to the real information.  And also how we learned to take things with a grain of salt and to deduce or estimate the veracity of any given chunk of information.

Olds don't have the mental flexibility to do that anymore.  It's hard enough to get them to learn to use the internet or a computer, let alone to perform the filtering that internet veterans do subconsciously.

Facebook probably makes it worse because all the "information" is formatted more or less in the same way and there are fewer tipoffs that it's utter bullshit as there may be on the internet at large.

Just an observation, carry on.

I’m sorry your GF’s mom is Swam
