The greatest Thanksgiving movie of all time

Obviously there’s a dearth of thanksgiving films. It’s not for everyone but the recent slasher flick “Thanksgiving” is actually great. If you like horror films you should check it out on Netflix. Starts on a Black Friday sale that goes wrong and gets nuts from there.

Somehow I’ve been with my wife for 25 years and tonight is the first time I’ve made her watch Dutch.

I haven't seen Dutch in decades, but remember when I first saw it enjoying the film, but thinking what a blatant ripoff of Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.  And by John Hughes no less.

I watch PTA on Sunday - such a great movie.  It was on cable opposite Christmas Vacation.  At first I was flipping back and forth, but PTA is just a better movie.  I like Christmas Vacation, but Chevy Chase doesn't come close to the duo of Steve Martin and John Candy.

Probably an unpopular opinion but Christmas vacation is my least favorite of those first 3 vacation movies.

Same. And for me, there’s a little room between 2 and 3.

Edit: oh hell, who am I kidding. I’ll take Vegas over Christmas too.

I'm 20 minutes into Dutch... I am just not liking it.  It's a straight ripoff: a couple of quotes, musical choices, forcing the rental car issue, character roles, etc.  But it's not just that.  Doyle is a detestable little shit from everything he's shown so far.  Might switch over to Pieces of April or Home for the Holidays if things don't improve soon.

Born '83.  Never heard of it till this thread just a few posts ago.

There was nothing entertaining on in the first games other than what's going on with Ol Miss/UF right now... so, being a glutton for punishment I finished the damn movie Dutch... it just got worse.  So many more ripoffs.  And stupid 90s humor (including 11 year olds being able to fight an adult).  But as low as the movie got, it still made the pathetic redemption in the last act somewhat enjoyable.

I kept a complete list of all the obvious PTA ripoffs.  Can someone remind me how to do spoilers?  I don't think I've done one in a long time.

lol - I was just trying to save space for people that didn't really care to read about it.  Here it is:

Chicago (because Hughes, so this is the least of all evils)

"Trouble on the homefront"

"The only thing you see on the interstate is concrete (interstate)"

"Anecdotes"

Nasty hotel room gets damaged.

Rental car gets destroyed.

Riding a Greyhound bus.

Instead of a ride in a car with pictures of nude girls, driving around with call girl/strippers.

Wallet theft and subsequent related car issues.

Riding in the trailer of a semi, unconventional way.

Breaking/ruining a bed.

Anxious wife/mother who is on the outs with her husband/son waiting at home.

Driving in a car unfit for the road near the end (Can't believe they made that homeless family drop them off at that mansion)

Final shot ending closeup on the loveable goofy guy's face.

Article on why they cut Candy’s long monologue:

Apparently it didn’t test well and made Del look manipulative.

I can see that. I think the ending is great without that last bit in the original script. Neal doesn’t need to hear the whole backstory. He finally feels empathy and just knows he needs to give Del a home for Thanksgiving.

Tomorrow night will be Charlie Brown, then Thursday we feast.

Just watched this for the first time in years.  WTF is with Peppermint Patty, Marcie, and Franklin inviting themselves to Thanksgiving dinner?  Don't they have families?  This was funny though:

Just finished watching planes trains and automobiles for the 20th time. Love this movie. Final scene is a great ending. The after-credit scene where his boss is sitting in his office with Thanksgiving turkey dinner and still trying to decide which shot to use in the add is perfect

I watched PTA with my wife and kids earlier this week, as per tradition. Probably seen it 10 times now and didn’t realize there was an after credit scene. I need to remember that next year.

This year was my kids first time watching it. They're 9.   They loved it. Loved the F word scene at the rental desk. Cracked up when she said "you're fucked"

Last 5 minutes gets me every time.

I can't believe Candy's been dead for 30 years.

I'll take it a step further and say that I can't stand Christmas Vacation.
