Yes I think you’re right. John McCain has the balls to stand behind the truth when that one elderly supporter called Obama something something Muslim. McCain easily could have said nothing like most politicians would. Why waste your breath if it doesn’t help you. But McCain praised his opponent as being a good man and fact checked a supporter which did not help his 2008 candidacy but it showed who he was.

The vitriol with which the right turned on McCain posthumously was especially fierce. It is as if the man held no positive character traits at all to listen to the loyal Trump supporters. They (QAnon believers) are turning on Kevin McCarthy now that he has made the statement about there being no place for conspiracy theories in the GOP. I'm not sure if his exact quoted words used conspiracy theories or QAnon, but those folks are steamed at him.

You have to wonder if Mitt Romney had to eat lunch at the table by himself (before DC began to shut down due to the virus) since the others were following orders, but I'm not going to hold my breath that the party will fracture in the run up to November. I kept thinking that some would crack during impeachment proceedings and Mitch shut that down, so this is all circus to me. Kevin will heel when he's told.

Their is no GOP without the insanity/racism/nutbar wing.  Those aren't "wings" anymore -- they're the whole fucking bird.  Get with the program, or GTFO of the party.

No disagreement here; I mean if it wasn't the whole United States of America going up in flames, it would be fascinating. But being in the middle of it is horrifying, depressing, sad, and a a big reason why the ledge looks so inviting.

I mean the part of me that isn't say F U Kevin, is pondering what is going on in his brain right now? Is he scared? Is he confident? So much of that depends upon if strategy is deliberate vs. seat of the pants decision making and just how much he knows about what rigging/info is going to take place/be dropped. I haven't forgotten that Barr said he has something he's going to reveal before November. Now, Rudy says that and I'm "Pfft, Rudy is all hat no cattle," but Bill. Bill can do things. Bill doesn't seem to care about whether those things are legal. Bill can make things happen. Make things appear or disappear. Bill Barr is a damn magician.

This is correct.  The modern Republican part is a three legged stool of:

1.  White grievance/victomhood

2.  Conspiracy theories

3.  False equivalency.

What the fuck does that even mean? Are they trying to say "one for all, all for one" but have to give it the dumbfuck twist so that it suits them better?

I think the bolded says it all. I mean give the person that started the whole thing some credit for having the good sense not to go with the Musketeer phrase because if you give these people shiny swords, the ER is going to be full of COVID patients and missing limbs.

You  defend your choice in politics in a manner that is similar to this choice in religion:  you argue why a particular Christian denomination gives you pause because of its stance on female pastors and whether the Host is real or symbolic - and you refuse to support that denomination even when the other choice is a child sacrificing Baal cult..

You seem stuck on this idea that we have to force a dichotomy.  We don't.  We need to move to multiparty democracy. It will require real structural change. The further you engage the two party system the harder that change becomes.

I remember that one.  The old did not call Obama a Muslim, she called him an Arab.

Good listen on NPR from the Atlantic journo who has done the most digging.

How come no one can figure out who this person is? Seems like if the FBI really wanted to they could track them down.
Thanks for the link. My older brother has been big on conspiracy theories for a while, but now I'm convinced he's a QAnon believer. He posts all the key talking points mentioned in that interview. So damn sad to see someone be so completely consumed by this bullshit.

One interesting thing I’ve noticed on social media: I have seen an uptick in Q-related posts, but it’s not from any of the conspiracy theory types. It’s the super “religious” Republicans that weren’t originally in on Trump but voted for him anyway. I really think there’s a psychological study to be done on these people: I think subconsciously they know he’s a piece of shit, so they have to invent this story about how he’s out there saving kids from pedophiles to justify (in their minds) voting for him.

Bingo.  Abortions weren't enough.    And communism is an old trope no one buys anymore.

Abortions and socialism are pretty consistently the talking points brought up anytime I question any of my family or friends on how they could still support Trump. The pedophiles angle is definitely gaining momentum though.

100%.  99% of people could hear the extreme Q ideas like” JFK Jr. isn’t really dead” theories, and they would laugh them off as crackpot ideas.  But less crazy Q theories are starting to take hold. Or perhaps it’s Q and slightly more reasonable people just coming together.

The very worst part is that expert advice is tossed aside because one “expert” disagrees and even the source of expertise might be questionable. Like when trump says the cdc or fda is wrong, or that he read that others disagree.

I really wonder how much of the Q stuff is being stirred up by Putin and company. I do not doubt that people believe that garbage, but I bet much of that is 'useful idiots' being manipulated. It is 100% sure that 'idiots' applies, so it is not so far to add the 'useful' prefix and what goes with that.

I’m starting to see more of the religious republicans positioning themselves as persecuted (even more so than the typical persecution complex). It all feeds into the insane feedback loop.

I’ve seen people that I was close with, that were generally normal and reasonable people disengage from reality and go down these crazy paths over the past few months. The next few months will be wild and will likely rip us apart.

There is hardly universal support inside the party for QAnon. Many of its leaders in Congress and powerful donors are privately horrified at the spread of the movement’s themes.

There's your problem. Anybody keeping their horror private is complicit. They keep it private for the worst reasons: personal gain.

Fuck them all.

It is unsettling to say the least (the folks that seem pretty regular going round the twist). We learned about the "Burned-over district" in one of my history classes (link to a Wiki article below if you're unfamiliar) and I would say the fervor is similar (except there were a number of groups also in that area that were socially radical for their day) but like @Brisketexan has said about cults, they really go further until I get this creepy feeling I'm in eighth grade again and reading The Lottery or learning about the Salem Witch Trials or something. This hive mind and sense they have of anticipation, of looking forward to something certain adds something and is one of the topics that is discussed in the explanation for the popularity of conspiracy theories, but the manipulation in the months to the election has me worried beyond belief. I don't care if Mark Meadows says, 'nothing to see here.' They are a ticking time bomb, many have taken that bizarre oath as a test of their loyalty and while most of us shake our heads and think they are kooks, someone else thinks they are useful matches for a conflagration set to ignite from coast to coast.

Yeah, the moral panic about child trafficking has been brewing in churches since before Trump announced he was running, but really took off the last couple of years when evangelical support swung to Trump. They need something to fall back on to make themselves feel righteous when they start questioning whether they're really the good guys, and most of them deep down don't really think abortion is as bad as they say it is. They needed more, so they convinced themselves that the people they hate (which is basically everyone else) were cannibal child rapists.

Drove to the coast this weekend.  Going through small town Oregon saw the exact 'save our children from pedophiles' signs and folks gathering.  And they were getting supportive honks from their fellow small town nutjobs.

Wife had no idea what it was about.  I got pissed that I was purposefully taking a break from all the bullshit only to have it thrown in my face.  Geezus.

It's a pretty solid strategy really because who doesn't want to protect children from sex trafficking? You'd have to be a real asshole not to support that movement!

My sister is as well, which I thought was just unbelievable.  I don’t follow social media posts closely so I hadn’t seen everything she’s throwing out there.

Then I sat down and talked to her.

And I have to say, related to me or not, That bitch is fucking nuts.

The beauty of it is that it's never anything local.  It's something going on in some Blue country, like New York, or California.   So they can make up whatever shit they need to.

One of my neighbors posted some Q shit on FB the other day. This is a guy I met on the first day of kindergarten for our kids 9 years ago. His son is one of my son's best friends and they live down our block. We used to do all kinds of shit together. Neighborhood bbqs, big group dinners out, I've had them up to the ranch for a boys weekend to fish and shoot guns and shit...stuff like that. In that time he's gone from your basic right leaning suburban dad to posting rants against libtards, to all lives matter, to back the blue, and now he's posting Q shit on facebook. I responded and said "dude, come on. You're smarter than this". He told me he's "done the research" and I need to come over and have a beer so he can tell me all about it. I told him I'd rather him try to sell me Plexus or some other pyramid scheme. Then he started sending me all kind of shit through FB messenger and I just stopped responding. Honestly, this has been like watching my high school best friend go from pot and beer to pills, to coke, to heroin, to dead from an overdose by 26. It's just...sad.

In my time in Oregon that tends to be California and Portland, in that order.

Jokes aside, didn't pizza gate get someone shot?  That's going to happen again, if it hasn't already.  Edit: wikipedia says shots, but I guess nobody actually hit.

Happened to my older brother when he got on Facebook. He was a very late adopter of smartphones (still very anti-technology) so he was essentially disconnected from all of the bullshit out there on the internet. Once he started down the rabbit hole that was it. I'm able to have short phone conversations with him and BS about normal things, but anything more than that inevitably goes off the rails. It's sad shit and I'm not sure there's any going back.

Deep Thoughts:

In a world where everything Trump accuses others of is really a confession

  • and QAnnon says that there is a group of left-wing Child Sex Traffickers attacking Trump
  • and Trump repeats the message and accuses Clinton of being in the group
  • and he defends Ghislaine Maxwell.

Then reality is that Trump is the head of a child sex trafficker ring out to get the Democrats (or he's its agent sent to distract everyone from what they are doing)

I think I made a strong case.  :)
