A BRITISH schoolgirl has been savaged by dolphins on a family holiday in Mexico with her mother recalling the terrifying moment the mammals dragged her daughter beneath the water.

Lexi Yeo, 10, was left bloodied and bruised when two dolphins attacked her during a holiday swimming experience in a closed-off pen with the creatures. Horrified mother, Laura, 40, watched in horror as the pair of bottlenose dolphins made an attempt at “dragging” her daughter beneath the water while ramming, biting and gnawing at her despite pleas from their trainers to stop. The mother, from Barkingside, East London, said: “It was terrifying. I thought she was going to die.

“But I’ve not even had a card, flowers or teddy bear for Lexi from TUI. They have washed their hands of us.

“More concerning, the dolphins are still swimming with tourists and TUI are continuing to work with the company.

“How long before this happens again — with even worse consequences?”

Lexi was saved only by clinging onto her bodyboard before one of the trainers dragged her to safety, The Sun reports.

The screaming youngster suffered bite marks, cuts and puncture wounds as well as bruises to her legs and feet.

Bosses at the “ethical” Dolphin Discovery experience in Cancun have since claimed the bad sea conditions had caused the dolphins to become distressed.

They also blamed the incident on a rogue male that “shouldn’t have been in the pen” at the time, causing changes in the other two dolphins’ behaviour.

The attack cut short the family’s £7,000 October holiday booked through holiday operator TUI.

TUI said they are in the process of investigating the incident.

They added they will contact the family immediately.

The family received a letter from the holiday company.

The letter read: “We are writing in regards to your Dolphin Gimmee All experience yesterday 18.10.

“Once again we would like to apologise for your experience, as this is not the usual standard of the day and not what we expect for our guests.

“We have passed all your comments and feedback onto your supplier, and are still waiting a response in regards to a refund for you.

“We are working out the logistics with the supplier as we wish to get you the most money back as possible.

“As soon as we have an answer we will get in touch, you can expect this from us by the end of the day tomorrow at the very latest.

“I have also attached the letter from Callum, sent to your old room regarding the air conditioning compensation.

“We thank you for your patience and understanding, rest assured we will have this resolved by tomorrow, as this is of urgent prior for us.”

It added: “We hope Lexi is feeling better soon!”

Dolphin attacks on humans are extremely rare.

There has only been one recorded instance of a dolphin killing a human.

This was Tiao, a male bottlenose dolphin spotted in the town of São Sebastião in Brazil around 1994.

He was widely known to be friendly with many tourists flocking to the area to see him.

This soon turned into harassment of the animal, with many grabbing his fin for rides and even instances when some tried to stick ice cream cones in his blowhole.

He became aggressive when tourists tried to restrain him to have pictures taken with him before he later killed a male swimmer and left the area for good having joined another group of dolphins.

You have to understand their history.  It's complicated.

Dolphins are only swimming with tourists who voluntarily choose and pay to swim with them.  If you're gonna put your kid in a tank with an animal don't blame some else when the animal does animal shit.

Everything I read says 90% of the industrial tuna industry (which includes tuna in a can) kills dolphins but don’t really care to argue about it.

Well next time, when we're actually talking about tuna attacking swimmers, you can throw in your little factoid to feel all relevant and shit.

Dolphins are too intelligent to do this randomly.  This little girl was "chosen" for whatever reason.

this.  mid-90s, sailing from the harbor due south of tallahassee.  at dusk, missed the buoys for the channel to the harbor and wedged on a sandbar.   everyone got out and tried to push off the sandbar, and 2 dolphins poke their heads straight up out of the water to watch the comedy..  no more than 15 feet from us.

at 3am the 2 dolphins are back, splashing their tails 2 feet from the back of the boat.  the tide had come in and we were floating again.

It's for a whole family and typically all-inclusive.

Although yes, typically they go to Spain or Spanish islands to save money

I would think Seychelles would be much cheaper than Cancun. Or hell, they could enjoy their own beaches. It can't be much worse than the low 60s they would experience in Majorca this time of year.
