Sources: 1 of college football's youngest coordinators is headed to Ole Miss

Dane Stevens set to reunite with Lane Kiffin, Charlie Weis Jr. in key passing game role

Dane Stevens already had work for the Ole Miss Rebels and USC Trojans on his resumè.  The 28-year-old Marietta, Georgia, native added offensive play-caller to his growing list of accomplishments this past season when he triggered the offense for West Georgia.

Now, multiple sources tell FootballScoop, Stevens is set for a return to The Grove.

Stevens is returning to Ole Miss as a passing game specialist for head coach Lane Kiffin and offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr., FootballScoop has learned.

The move to Stevens's home-away-from-home comes just a year following his exit from Ole Miss to become West Georgia's and coach Joel Taylor's first-ever offensive coordinator at the FCS level.

The result of Stevens calling plays for West Georgia amidst its transition from NCAA Division II into full FCS participation?

At nearly 260 passing yards per game and more than 30 points per game, the Wolves would have been in the top 20 and top 30, respectively, in passing and scoring offense. Despite the uptick in competition, the West Georgia offense boosted its passing offense by roughly 80 yards per game over the 2023 campaign and also elevated its scoring offense by three points per game.

West Georgia won four games in Taylor's first year and its first as an FCS competitor, including a stunning, season-opening upset of perennial Southern Conference and FCS Playoffs contender Samford.

Changes within the last year to the NCAA rules regarding staffers being able to coach on the practice field -- and not just the 10 assistant coaches -- also mean that Stevens will not only be a passing game specialist for the Rebels but continue to hone his coaching techniques.

Kiffin guided the Rebels to a second-straight 10-win season for the first time in school history.

Ole Miss is scheduled to open its 2025 season at home against FBS program Georgia State before diving directly into SEC play with back-to-back league tilts at Kentucky and home against Arkansas.

The Rebels also face Tulane and Washington State in non-conference play in addition to further SEC contests against LSU, Georgia and Oklahoma among others.

Ole Miss Makes Major Staff Change After Back-to-Back 10-Win Seasons

J.C. Shelton...   Mar 4, 2025

Ole Miss and head coach Lane Kiffin are undergoing changes to the Rebels' personnel department ahead of the 2025 season.

Kiffin and Co. are coming off a second-consecutive season of at least 10 wins (10-3) after setting a program record with 11 wins in 2023.

A key factor for the recent surge is the success via the transfer portal, as Ole Miss has hauled in top-two transfer classes over the last three cycles, including the nation's No. 1 class in 2024, per 247Sports.

The personnel department, led by general manager Billy Glasscock, recently lost assistant director of player personnel DJ Mann to Texas A&M. However, the open role is expected to be filled by longtime Texas high school football coach Marvin Nash, according to On3's Billy Embody on Tuesday.

Mann's departure was marked as a significant loss in regards to his recruiting connections within the state of Texas. But Ole Miss appears to have addressed the question with Nash, who spent 15 years there in the high school ranks.

Nash spent the last two seasons with Rice as director of recruiting operations, his first role at the collegiate level.

He previously was recruiting coordinator and offensive coordinator for San Marcos High School and helped lead Denton Guyer to three state championship appearances, two state titles (2012-13) and five semifinals appearances.

Now, Nash has the opportunity to work with a major SEC program on the rise at Ole Miss.

The Rebels will open the 2025 season at home against Georgia State on Aug. 30.
