It was called a fumble on the field when watched by the refs at full speed.

And then it was clearly a fumble when watched via replay.

So it was not a bad call, that's true.  But it was a terrible reversal of the correct call.

Anyway, as Dabo clearly stated, God hates the Buckeyes so it all worked out for the better in the end.

About that first part, yea maybe.  I get the sense more and more that officials just let shit play out.  If they whistle it there the play is for SURE dead.....hence one of the issues with "that's the way it was called on the field".   think in a lot of those turnover score situations more and more if there is a question they just let it play out and then let replay deal with it.

This. Let it go and let the replay tell the tale. Never possessed it IMO.

In slo-mo it looks like he caught it, but in real time that 3 steps was about 0.5 secs.  No real possession in that short of time.

you realize if he caught that in the endzone and got stripped after those 3 steps it would have been called a TD- right?

so if its a TD if caught and 3 steps taken in the endzone, its a fucking fumble if caught and 3 steps taken in the field

Although he did take three "steps," they were more like staggers while he was falling and trying to possess the ball.

Regardless, either way that comes out, it's a flukey play.  The TD had they had it would have been a windfall, not a super-strong football play that the refs took away.

Not the kind of thing a coach should really be bitching about.

I am not even in the conversation. The team I follow is in it. One would be stupid to want the competition to get a leg up. You are a moron, if you would feel different when it comes to your favorite team.

You realize you fumble it at the 4 yard line, nobody recovers it and it rolls out of bounds at the 1 it's your ball back at the four, if nobody recovers it and it rolls out of bounds 1 yard further forward for some magical reason it is now no longer yours, it's the other teams ball. Lots of shit is different about the other side of the "plane", whether it should be or not.

Exactly.  And the "You can't overturn something that close because they call on the field was a fumble" doesn't hold water because the refs are now going to go out of their way to let the play go on and then sort it out on replay.  Which is what all of us fans want.

The NCAA and NFL need to catch up with modern technology and totally reform how they officiate.  At a minimum, use replay to get it right, not adhere to some goofy "only overturn if it is clear and obvious."  Just get it right.

Good point. With that being said, why the fuck would he assume he was going to scramble right there. He had a clean pocket, if I’m not mistaken.

Expand

Fields was sliding left some I think but mainly the WR knew he was covered, as the safety was jumping the route, so he broke to the corner but the only way you do that is if it is a scramble play for the exact reason it ended up being a pick. It was an epic mistake by the WR.   you don't cut off the route until you are sure it is a scramble play.

If Olave runs the post -- and therefore doesn't slip -- it's probably a TD in front of the mediocre white Clemson safety. Oh well.

Can't watch the games and read these threads so this may have already been said, but Fields has a weak arm.  Anything long, especially the deep outs, took forever for the ball to get to the reciever.  He nearly had a couple of those intercepted.

Also, it was a dumb call for Day not to go for two on their 4th quarter TD.  It ended up not making a difference once Clemson got the TD, but if OSU had held them to a field goal attempt on that drive that one point would have been the difference.

actually it made a difference until clemson got the 2 pointer.  had clemson failed he would have been able to tie it with a FG(assuming OSU converted their 2 pointer).  with 10 minutes left the binder is in effect at all times.  just a brain dead move.

If OSU had gotten the 2, then Clemson would have just kicked the easy XP to go up 4.

And there wasn't even a mention of the decision on the broadcast. Just completely glossed over. It was a Charlie Strong-esque mistake.

Exactly.  He sticks with the route and he may very well have scored.

I think Fowler mentioned it later in passing but I'm sure Herbie and Fowler didn't want to blow up Day on national TV.

Fuck that homer fraud Herbstreit.

That said, Day is the perfect whiny bitch Buckeye HC. No, he didn’t catch that TD. No, it wasn’t a catch and fumble. Yes, it was targeting. Yes, it was roughing the punter. Yes, it was regarded to not go for 2.

You lost in the first half getting FGs instead of TDs. Own it and quit being a total bitch.

Actually both Fowler and Herbie expressed surprise as to why Day wouldn't go for two.  Herb ended right before the kickoff with a critical, "Only Day knows why they didn't go for 2 there."

He's not good. But at the end of the Day, it's a 19-yard FG. Day fucked up plain and simple. There is no rational reason why you don't go for 2 there -- unless it's the first half.

I thought the officiating was great in the LSU game.  they actually called OU for the OL holding and PI when it was deserved.

there wasn't anything obvious about OSU being better.  Clemson and OSU were very evenly matched, but Clemson had the experience and the bigger playmakers.

it was a great game...

Dont agree, from midway in the 2nd quarter till pretty much the end of the game, I felt like Clemson controlled Ohio State through tempo and good defense. They played disciplined and made great in game adjustments that ultimately made the difference in the end.
