Cowboy boot related.  I am trying to figure out a good Christmas gift for my brother.  I thought a nice coffee table type book about cowboy boots and how they are made would be cool.  I guess it would be about cobbling.  I was hoping Luchesee might have a book like that, but no luck.

Has anyone found a nice big book with great photos of boots and how they are made?

This is out of print but might be what you're after.  The author is a boot maker and used to host a forum for boot aficianados and appreciates the craft as much as the product.  https://www.amazon.com/Cowboy-Boots-Jennifer-June/dp/B0043RTAAW

Cobbling is repairing shoes.  Cordwaining is making them.

Just had someone tell me they put shoe trees (cedar) in their boots. Am I somehow this late to the party?

i keep cedar boot shoe trees in my luchese boots, but i think todays boots are better made and hold their shape

cedar boot trees, not cedar shoe trees

I put cedar boot trees in all my boots. They’re supposed to absorb the sweat from your feet and keep the leather in better condition.

Most of my boot trees are tecovas. I don’t have any tecovas boots though. For my square-ish toe boots, I get rod patrick boot trees.

Dumb question amnesty request: I haven’t owned a pair of cowboy boots since the mid to late 90s. I was given these Lucchese as a Christmas gift from a good friend.

IMG-5955.jpg

What should I do out of the box to help break in, protect, etc?  I won’t wear often here on the east coast but want to rock them well when I do.

Bick 4 is good stuff works on just about any skin, but apply relatively often, even if you don't wear, keep em from drying out and cracking.

Using your hands to flex the sole can help with breakin some.  In the most traditional fit, the instep is quite tight and a) holds your foot in the boot b) keeps your foot from sliding down into the toe and c) makes them a bit of a bitch to get off, and maybe on.  That will allow some heel slippage until the sole gets broken in.  In the modern, D or E fits all, world, your heel slips like crazy because the boot doesn't really fit.  So it's probably even more important to get the sole flexed ASAP.

I'm a 9 1/2B. My favorite boot is my Redwings sized right with the white gum soles. My momma bought me a pair of new Tony Lamas. Full quill, in black. She finally said something profound, "these should last you the rest of your life."

As the others said, Bick 4 works great. Bick 5 if they get a little dirty. Bick 1 will take chrome off of a bumper, I don’t recommend it.

I don’t ever use polish on my boots or shoes because it darkens/changes the color of the leather. I’d avoid the shoe shines and just do it yourself.

I have flat feet so i have to really break in boots before i can wear them comfortably. I usually wear them like slippers around the house for about a month. Usually good to go after that.

I've had my Dan Post Renegade Bayapache boots for a couple of months and absolutely love them. The leather is worn looking and is starting to look real good. They felt fairly "broke in" when I bought them, but feel even better now. Hard to beat them for $210. (Sorry, didn't wear them today and can't send an updated pic). Here is the boot on DanPostboots.com

Does anyone have any experience with the Allen Edmonds boots?

No, but I was on line recently and i was very impressed with the look.  I wore cap toe AE dress shoes for years, before switching to J&M (yes i still suit up every day).

The AE ropers I saw favored my Luchesse (sp) calf skin and looked sharp.  I would like to see them in person, but I dont have a store near me,

I like the look as well, but I am not gonna pay what they are asking without seeing them in person.  There is a store in Houston, but I am not close enough to where I can just pop in. When I make it over there, I will see if I can get some pics to post here.

I have a 37 year old pair of brown Dan Post lizard boots in size 8.5 that are too small for me anymore, but still decent shape. My feet are size 9.5/10 these days. Any thoughts what to do with them?

I've sold a couple of pairs of boots on Ebay. May not get too much, but it is something. Maybe $150, but probably less. I know that isn't close to MSRP, but used boots seem to not have a good resale value. Guess it depends.

I’d be happy to give them away to someone who can fit into them if they want them.

My Dan Posts are 8.5.  If you wanna send em my way I'll gladly work them into the rotation.  I'll Venmo shipping costs etc.

Edit: Pic of my current daily wears. DPs on the end.

I was looking for a pair of lizard boots, as it’s probably about time to retire my Tony Lama ostrich. I didn’t feel like spending $500, so I figured I’d see if there was anything good on eBay. Ended up on Poshmark, and found these Tomy Lamas for $100. Wasn’t sure what to expect with secondhand boots but these are in very good condition and seem only slightly worn based on the sole and heel.

Ahh. Yeah, I don’t know anyone who wears 8.5 in my circle. Maybe donate to a hand me down store? Or sell them to them. I bought a pair of Lucchese at a place in Tyler. $80.

The boots that watched Jerry Gray separate Bo Jackson's shoulder in 1984 have been placed in a loving, attentive home.

I could have sworn I read somewhere that LVMH or some other "fashion house" holding company had acquired them.

But wiki says Arena Brands, which used to own Stetson and a number of other western brands.  Looks like they're down to Lucchese, and PE-controlled, specifically Hicks, Muse.

I’d imagine with all the uproar over Yellowstone, in about 6-12 months there’s going to be a shitload of “gently worn” boots on the market.

That's the history of fashion but western wear in particular.  Western comes and goes every 10-15 years or so.  Westerns in the 50's and 60's, Urban Cowboy in 1980, Garth Brooks in the 90's, and now Yellowstone and what not.  From what I can tell, Lucchese really isn't increasing production capacity.  They're just increasing store count but I suspect most of them are leases.

Western will always be at least somewhat popular in certain parts of the country but right now you have GQ magazine advising people how to dress like a cowboy.  (Lulz.)

Tecovas is mid tier and will blow away on the prairie when this western fad dies down and/or the economy slows.

Lucchese will be fine.  Rich people will still be rich and want to cosplay cowboy.

Ariat will be fine.  Poor rednecks will still want to redneck.

I’m not a boot know it all but the Ariat Bench Made series (I own two pair) are a step up from most of the Ariat lineup and are on par with the Tecovas I have. You can start there and see how it goes. Caveat: you can only try them on in an Ariat store as they don’t sell them elsewhere. Or order online and return if you don’t like the fit.
