Limited series "The Confession Killer", about the whole Henry Lee Lucas saga,  dropped overnight. One episode in, and so far pretty good.

Finished the Henry Lee Lucas series. The Texas Rangers, DPS, and Williamson County (of course) can go fuck themselves.

Worth the watch, though?

Jim Boutwell was a cocksucker. And Bob Prince is a complete doofus.

Watching now. Makes it pretty obvious that cop idiocy and unethical behavior isn’t a new phenomenon.
these guys all just wanted credit for closing murder cases.

Wait until you get to what they (allegedly) did to the McLennan county DA for daring to question them.

I'm in the 3rd episode of the Lucas thing and yeah... fuck these guys.  If you want to really get mad at Texas law enforcement I always recommend reading Nate Blakeslee's Tulia

Ohhhhh that burned me up!
I had heard of HLL before but most of the shenanigans around him happened when I was a kid. In my adult mind, based on my childhood memories, he really was a huge serial killer like Bundy, Ridgway, Gacy etc. So watching this was a real eye opener.

And I know this is a Texas centered board and the Rangers have an almost mythic reputation but I’m beginning to think they’re just like regular police with cowboy uniforms.

That Boutwell jerk was HLL’s freaking BFF and he reveled in it.

Those poor families. Their loved ones have been victimized over and over again by the system.

Watchin this henry lee lucas shit is crazy.
How many handies you rhink ol clemmie gave henry? In the name of god and since henry was doin gods work and all.
Grew up in wilco and boutwell waa pretty much a god around here.
Stories of shit he did were legendary.
Modern day rangers (or at least the ones I know) are totally opposite than back then (no cr).

About half way through the Lucas doc. Really shocking stuff, I had never heard of this blatant coverup before.

How can some one like Boutwell and the lady preacher become so fond of a one eyed, four toothed, physically stinking monster?

I can wrap my mind around some poor lonely ladies writing love letters to some handsome, charming, intelligent murderer like Ted Bundy because there have always been those type of groupies out there.

But Lucas literally had no redeeming qualities and seeing her holding his filthy hand and those rangers laughing it up with him was sickening.

They did, yes.

Also the Rangers' historical reputation has been becoming more heavily scrutinized in recent years.  Without taking a dump on the entire legacy of the Texas Rangers they also have been involved in some border atrocities and light ethnic cleansing

What's crazy is 35 years later, and a ton of proof they were wrong, they still refuse to see it.

That's what I think was the thing that pissed me off the most. Can't you just admit you're wrong at some point?

Feel so bad for those families.

Really liked the detective from Dallas. I wish more police were like her.

Boutwell and Bob Prince can rot in hell. Can't believe Prince agreed to be interviewed.

I remember Dave Ward or one of the other Houston anchors doing a one on one interview on death row and thinking this guy is lying. Just accept you did all these murders. Boy were we dumb. Fuck cops.

The directors said they may do a second series. They have enough in the can to follow up on cases and the effects the Henry Lee Lucas debacle has had on them.

Man, what an eye-opening documentary.

I heard Lucas' name on the local news... seemingly every night for a year when I was a little kid.  It's weird to see this perspective 40 years later.

It's just sad to see this behind-the-curtain look at law enforcement, and to realize how these officers were both remarkably lazy and profoundly corrupt.

I mean, you had a reporter from Dallas and victim's family from Lubbock -- those people were doing the fucking job of law enforcement -- trying to put HLL at specific locations in time, interviewing witnesses, establishing timelines, and uncovering critical evidence.

Then you have law enforcement posing for photos, acting like Johnny Bad Ass for the cameras, making statements full of bluster and bravado, and then sabotaging and attacking the private citizens who were doing the police work.

We see the footage of Boutwell's funeral, and all its grandeur, solemnity, and rows of uniformed officers saluting his coffin... and you see that realizing now what a lazy piece of shit he was.

One more thing...

After seeing a whole lot of these miscarriage-of-justice legal documentaries, here's a phrase that I'm putting zero credibility in from now on:  "HE KNEW DETAILS OF THE CRIME THAT *ONLY* THE KILLER COULD HAVE KNOWN!!"

We keep seeing that statement delivered with breathless excitement by reporters standing at the courthouse... and yet it often turns out to be complete bullshit (Henry Lee Lucas, Brendan Dassey, The Central Park Five, countless others).

Yep.  Cops is basically cops.  Some have decent suits (FBI), some wear cool hats and boots (Rangers), others dress like shit or wear corny uniforms.

They're more alike than different.

Took me way too long to figure this out.

Mexican-Americans in South Texas have known this since forever. There’s a couple famous corridos about some of the crimes the rangers committed.

Csb: According to family legend I had a great great great granduncle that was (allegedly) a bit of a murderous outlaw in the Laredo region back in the day, and he got arrested and lynched some Rangers. A big reason why I’ll be never root for the baseball team.

And call me weird but I’m very curious about HLL’s stink. There were a couple of offhand mentions about it but no details.

Like, did he never bathe? Never wipe his ass? Did he have a medical condition? Rotting from the inside out? WHAT?

I need the details.

Only 2 episodes in, but I’m wondering how the FBI didn’t come in and throw cold water all over the task force and the obvious bullshit that it was extracting from Lucas.

Side note: Lucas would be a good character for the next season of Mindhunter.

Maybe because the head of the Department of Public Safety at the time had once been the number 2 guy at the FBI, and had a sordid history in that position.

Keep watching.

I need this information too, and google didn't help.

Finished up last night. Boutwell, Prince, and especially Col. Jim Adams, can all go fuck themselves.

The whole thing was/is a goat rodeo. Hopefully more DNA testing will be done to bring some semblance of closure and justice to the families.

I'm guessing it was periodontal (gum disease). That shit can stink up a whole room.

Prince did say something true... the most dangerous place on earth is between Vic Feazell and a camera.

csb - I knew the man seen escorting Lucas to McLennan Co.  I also met and ate lunch with Mike Cox about a year or so ago.

So isn't it the least bit ironic that the Texas Ranger Museum is in Waco?  Shame on them and Boutwell.  Those poor families.

That’s a funny way of saying “I don’t like the Yankees because I’m jealous of their success”.

No, it’s a silly way of saying you are an idiot if you dislike a baseball team because it shares its name with a state police agency.

So you're mad at the law enforcement officers that lynched your ancestor, who murdered people?

*Allegedly murdered someone. Yes. Also not 100% sure if it was actual ancestor of mine or just someone close to my family. Regardless, fuck the rangers. Never wanted to root for the baseball team anyway, they suck.

There are factual instances of Rangers lynching hispanic Texans with none to spurious justification if it makes a difference. Again I’m not trying to shit on the entire history of the Texas Rangers but it’s not all white hat bullshit. I can think of Porvenir as an example because there was a recent dust up over a historical marker between descendants of the Texans who were lynched and descendants of the Texans who did the lynching.

LMAO at Prince saying/believing that Boutwell gave the reporter all that access, "and then he just decided to turn on us because he was very, very anti-law enforcement." lol, ok. fuck outta here.

"The task force has nothing to apologize for or be embarrassed about." - Bob Prince, after it had become irrefutably obvious that his task force was simply getting this man to confess to every open homicide in America. How fucking soulless and crass can you be? what a clueless piece of shit. but hey, he's a cop, so we all need to respect and praise everything he thinks, says, or does.

Yep - his constant “we were just facilitators...we didn’t clear any of those cases” braying made me want to thump him upside his watermelon noggin.

Fuck Texas Ranger Bob Prince. That guy should be stripped of his badge. The Sheriff was an elected hack who abused his position. Fine, But Prince sticking to his blue line bullshit to this day. Fuck him

Truly infuriating.

But I give the team responsible for the documentary an A.

Nice editing. Definitely worth the watch. The opening song/sequence is haunting.

This.  The documentary would not have been near as good without the film of the crew from Japan.

My father’s partner Don Higginbotham represented HLL he always said the same thing they both said he smelled like a decaying body.
