Denton Ryan scores on a crazy kickoff return

Not to recruit up the football board, but Bowman is my favorite recruit based on his sophomore Hudl tape. I haven’t seen his junior year stuff yet, kid is amazing.

Regarding the odd punter kick that turned into a TD, it seems as though that would essentially be similar to a drop kick missed field goal, which could indeed be returned for a score. But it’s ruled a penalty, declined and still a score. I’m no ref, so I hope they got it right.

(Drop kicks can probably only bounce once before the kick is attempted, so yeah, illegal kick.)

I seem to remember that Texas ran this for a while.   Thinking it was Ham, Lam, and Jam Jones a few times?  Can't remember who the swing guy was.

It was '74 when most kickoffs allowed time for that maneuver. We ran it all season and I loved it. I think it went sour in the Gator Bowl and we abandoned it as too risky. I don't know if Ham was on campus yet and the other two Joneses were after him. Earl was here, but he didn't do kickoff returns.

My freshman year.

Jam was the last of the Joneses, not Ham.

Much crazier play in this same game....

Would you ever consider taking the penalty?  You get a safety and a chance to then pick up the td anyway on presumably a short field after the free kick.  Probably only if it were late in a game and the safety would cut the lead to 7 or 8.

I remember Switzer told the refs before our game with them to watch that play because we were handing the ball off illegally.

Something to do with the angle of it or something. Never understood what they were calling but they flagged us several times for it in that game.

I am sure Switzer's complaint was the first hand off was forward.

Denton Ryan took care of this by bringing the first ball carrier past the "dealer" before handing off.
