Since this has become the “pretty good covers” thread, here’s a really cool one-man cover of Purple Rain using a unique instrument and a looper. Stick with it, it’s worth it for the solo.

Something just not right about that

Man, I get it, opinions are like assholes, we all have them . . . in my opinion, that just sucks complete 100% USDA Grade A ass.  That is fucking awful.

His tone is just disgusting.  Horrible.  It doesn't sound like there's an amp in the same zip code, much less a vacuum tube.  The effects sound like Eric Johnson took a Viagra and fucked Tom Sholz for over 4 hours.

The playing is all sizzle without steak.  No soul, whatsoever.

And let's be clear, I cannot play like that, not in this lifetime, not in any future lifetimes.  I'd love to have that skill.  I'd KILL to have that skill.  But I sure as hell wouldn't use it like that.  Yikes.

OK, sorry.  + rep

I uh... agree. Couldn't listen to more than a few bars of it before I shut it off.

Have you seen the video of Dave Mustaine trying to do "metal classical" with the San Diego Symphony? They've... since been taken down. But you can read a vivid description here.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4z9sA8XfHwE and here's some audio... :O

That's what Petrucci's "Purple Rain" sounded like to me. Oh my word. Oh. My. Word.

I love me Dream Theater and some good technical metal but maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan...

I thought the Petrucci cover was good. Just a very good guitarist interpreting a very different song than what he typically plays in his own style.

His style isn’t my favorite but I liked it.

Aw man, it didn't even get going yet!

As a technical manifesto (it was for a lecture at Musicians Institute), that version of Purple Rain covers just about everything humans have accomplished on guitar up to that point. State of the art kinda stuff. I'm not a big Petrucci fan, can't listen to Dream Theater for too long before I get fatigued, but I appreciate what that dude is able to do with his fingers. I could watch it just for that, damn the music. He has a Charlie Parker level of precision and accuracy. I know perfection often feels antiseptic and too clean, like a hospital, and this reaches those levels at times, but man, that version of Purple Rain belongs on the Voyager so aliens know not to fuck with us.

And Jimmy, that tone seemed to perfectly pay homage given the context of the song. Did it need more chorus? lewl

But a context-be-damned cover can be pretty fun too:

TLDR: I will pay real money if anyone can find me tabs of Petrucci's Purple Rain.

Yeah, I'd rather hear a good interpretation with the occasional wrong note or out-of-tune note than something played technically flawlessly but poorly interpreted.

Mstislav Rostropovich < Heinrich Schiff, knowhutimean?

Petrucci is enigmatic to me. Massively talented but most of his stuff has no swing or groove to it. And I also think it’s weird that he went all Zack Wylde lumberjack with his look. It worked for Zack because Zack is a big Jersey meathead. But I think it looks odd on JP.

Nice a capella take on "Boys Of Summer" by Petra Haden.  When I say "a capella", I mean it's all voice.  Every instrumental part is there, though (and the guitar solo slays me.)

Interesting, but far from better

The original, which I like just fine for what it is - country blues recorded at the very beginning of recorded sound.

But the Wolf.  Damn.  He blows it out the damn water.

Just released Tom Petty cover, superior to original I think.

You have GOT to be shitting me. This shit? This shit is better than Tom Fucking Petty? They took a badass cock-of-the-walk, take-no-shit rocker and took all the fucking balls and soul out of it and made it a song for 14 year old girls to write poetry to. Petal is her name? Fucking PETAL? C'mon man.

I didn't say Petal is better than Tom Petty. And all credit goes to him for the strength of the lyrics/basic melody of course. I just think I like this quiet, earnest version more than the brash synth-rock one. I'm sure Tom Petty could have done a really effective stripped down version too.

And in these situations I always respect the choice to not go acoustic.

And I didn't say you said Petal is better than TP. I was just making fun of her performance name. But you DID say you think that this cover is better than TP's version. And while I understand music appreciation is entirely subjective, and there is not right and wrong answer with respect to what one prefers, in this instance, you're still wrong. :)

Drake can't sing for shit and Paramore can't write a good song, but holy shit you get Hayley Williams to sing a Drake song and you get some sex magic.

Stevie topped Jimi here.

I've always enjoyed this version much more than the Allman Brothers original

I'm in complete agreement.  It's a stunning recording for starters.  Plus, it just grooves better.

De-testicled that song.

I don't understand why so many classical players can't even swing just a little bit.  No groove.  My sis is the same way.

I always figured because no room for swing in classical. And you have to train so hard to be a classical that it rewires you.

Yeah, but you'd have to be half deaf to transcribe her opening violin riff the way she did.  I mean, just ape the song, it's not exactly difficult.  She literally straightened the phrase out, for no good reason at all.  Maybe it's just the lack of bends, which is probably a no-no on violin.  My guess is she had it transcribed to notation and played it off that, instead of listening to the track.

Not a big deal, just weird to me.
