Serious question. Why are people Cowboys fans?

My almost extinct NFL fandom is complex...I am a native Texan, but spent my elementary school years in Tennessee. In the 70s, TN was a free agent state for fans -- nobody rooted for the Bengals, Falcons or St. Louis Cardinals just because they were the closest teams. Most kids bandwagoned on to the Steelers or Cowboys, but I picked the Rams, because I was an Aries and their '70s unis were the jam. My dad had already cemented my Horn love, though, and when Earl went to the Oilers I ditched the Rams with the quickness and became an Oiler fan for life -- through the Luv Ya Blue years, the shit years that followed, and then Glanville and Pardee. I moved back to Houston for HS and went off to college in Austin, headed back to TN for awhile, spent three years overseas, went back to Nashville for two years, and then came back to Houston for good in '97, the same fucking year the Oilers moved to Tennessee.

So my dad had his team come to him and I lost mine in the same year. I now have to endure his (understandable) weekly complaining about the Adams's mismanagement of the Oilers, so even as I no longer give a fuck about the franchise, I am not even rid of the worst parts of Oiler fandom.

I tried to be a Saints fan for a couple of years when Houston lacked a team and Ricky was in New Orleans, but it just didn't take, I guess because they were rarely on TV in Houston. Had Fisher not have screwed up the VY years so badly, they might have got me back, but we know how that worked out.

As for the Texans, I gave them a shot, but it was even less successful than my halfhearted attempt to glom on to the Saints. As a matter of fact, I hate the Texans so much I actively hope they lose every weekend, mainly because of the simple fact that they are not the Oilers.

Yes that's spiteful and irrational but I don't give a shit.

The Oilers were Houston, from the team name to the stickers on the helmets to Bum and Earl and the House of Pain.

This bunch is just generic NFL crap: lame uniforms, lunkhead Yankee coach, manufactured traditions, shitty results on the field and dumbass ownership.

Hanging onto the Cowboys or any other major flawed enterprise ( relative to the audience/ fans) is like never getting over losing out on your high school crush. There is no acceptance of the reality that you have been dumped and / or passed over.

In the case of the Cowboys it’s JJ and his meddle fingers that are all about scooping money and attention  apparently, but definitely not about Ws and Ls.

Some folks enjoy pain and suffering, but get out of here stating you are a true fan if you are actively being trolled by ownership/mgmt.

You  not a fan being a fan, you are being a sports cuck, and you like it that way.

My boss is from the area so it’s understandable. But man are they a clusterfuck.

It’s because most cowboys fans are unbearable assholes when it comes to football. They are as bad as fucking aggy when it comes to bragging about made up bullshit stats, wins, losses, next year, what ifs, the refs fucked us, dez caught it, and any other dumb shit they can think of. It’s an absolute beating to talk to most of those mouth breathers about football, particularly if the cowboys win a couple of games in a row.

You just described every single fanbase for every single sport. No idea why people think only Cowboys fans do those things you listed.

Sadly, his son Stephen is worse. The Cowboys are a family business. It is never leaving the Jones family barring something weird happening. Jerry's grandson will probably own the team once Stephen dies. The nightmare will never end for Dallas fans.

How is Stephen worse?  From where I'm sitting, about the time Jerry started to let Stephen work more into the fold of decision making is about the time the Cowboys started actually making some semi-decent personnel decisions.  I look forward to the day Stephen and Charlotte (maybe not Jerry Junior so much) are at the helm once Jerry passes.

And yes, all of Jerry's grandchildren are being groomed for some kind of role within the Cowboys organization.  And most of those kids, by all accounts that I'm aware of, are pretty good, hardworking kids...especially given the situation they were born into.

You're right about one thing, though...this team will never leave the Jones family.  Their tree has way too many limbs for that to ever happen.

It's easy to continue to dog pile on Jerry and there's no doubt he's done some dumb shit over the years that were mostly driven by his ego.  But, setting up the Cowboys as a family business the way he has is actually very admirable and something I'd think any one of us would do in a similar fashion if we ever had the chance.  To forecast the future of the Cowboys as a nightmare once Jerry dies because the team will stay in the family is just dumb.

Jerry didnt force Jimmy out because he wanted to force Jimmy out. It was because Jimmy hated Switzer. And for jerry to force Jimmy out, the one thing he had to do was tell Jimmy he was gonna hire Switzer. If he didnt, he couldnt hire Switzer, plain and simple.

You on dope son?

If Dak wasn't the QB I wouldn't give a damn about the cowboys.

I understand rooting for players and following them. I was a 49ers fan when I was a kid. Just watched a game and decided I liked them. I was a fan of Joe Montana, Steve Young, roger Craig, Jerry Rice and Ronnie Lott. I really liked Ronnie Lott. I started following the Raiders after he went there. I was a big fan of the University of Texas at Tennessee when Scaife, VY, Griffin and Hall were there.

I mean, that’s just not true. I’m not saying he’s much better, but we wouldn’t have will McClay if not for Stephen Jones. We’d have johnny football instead of Zack Martin if not for Stephen Jones. McClay isn’t perfect, but he’s better than most at what he does. Stephen Jones isn’t perfect, but he doesn’t have the same “I need to prove the world wrong and prove I can win without jimmy” inferiority complex.

I don't know about the 25 and unders but americas team was branded back in the 70s.  They won more games than any other franchise from the late 60s to late 70s, played in 5 Super Bowls, they had some of the biggest rivalries in the NFL with the steelers and the eagles, and they had the cheerleaders.
Interesting note, the TV show Dallas aired from 1978-1991.  That show propelled Texas and Dallas specifically into international stardom.  Many people in countries like France would give you the double bird if you said you were American, yet if you told them you were from Texas you were nearly a celebrity.
Coincidentally, the cowboys won the Super Bowl in 1977 and 1992 seasons, bookending the tv show.  Longhorn network?
Austin is a great place to live, you can be a spurs, astros and cowboys fan and no one gives a shit.

The city of Dallas has not had a pro football team since 1971.

rivalries the eagles and steelers?

fuuuuuuuuuck

what the fuck are the goddamn shitass turdball stinking washington fucking redskins? chopped liver?

I blame my dad. He got me hooked on the Cowboys even though he grew up in Beaumont and should have been an Oilers fan.
I know why he is a Boys fan and not an Oilers fan. it is because the Cowboys were on tv in houston and the surrounding area and the oilers wern't due to blackout restrictions. it is the reason I was a cowboys fan despite growing up in houston. that and Tom Landry had a show where he would break down the previous week's game. ran film backwards and forwards and explained what was going on. when the dumbfucks in the murchison family sold the cowboys to that fucking aggy moron bum bright after clint died and bum sold it to arkansas inbred rotted goat turd jerra and jerra fired the men that made the cowboys and the modern nfl I was done. fuck jerrah fuck bum bright fuck arkansas fuck aggy. if the cowboys pass out of the jerra jones family hands then I might consider becoming a fan again.

pa fuck the texans. when they started and loaded up on aggy and then turned vince down I knew they would never amount to shit.

I kinda like the fins cause they suck, you know they are gonna suck and it is humerous.

Miami has the dolphins a shitty football team!

They take the ball from goal to goal who knows the fuck why bla bla bla

and when you say the dolphins you ain't talking super bowl!!

I mean the fins couldn't even pull off tanking a season.

pathetic.

maybe the finns will hire hermann.

we should be so lucky

I grew up a Cowboys fan in the 70s, in Tennessee when there was not NFL team yet. I was drawn to Tom Landry, Staubach,, Too Tall, Randy White, Drew Pearson, Tony Dorsett, etc, and an organization that I perceived to be the class of pro sports. Then we moved to Austin & it was a natural fit.

This here. I dunno how people, especially Texans or anyone who was a Cowboys fan prior to Jerruh can continue forking over cash to this POS, given what he's done to a once-proud franchise.

If jerry wouldn't have fired tom, could he have purchased the cowboys? Yes or no.
no. jerra is the only one of the potential buyers that accepted that stipulation. bum did things in typical aggy fashion. fucking aggy poltroon coprophagic dog fucker.

but it is ultimately the Murchison family's fault for being stupid enough to sell to an aggy piece of shit in the first place. Landry and Schramm were doomed because they were of t.u. hell that turd bright probalallby bought the cowboys just so he could get back at t.u.

Show your work.
Bright was an asshole and seemed pretty sick of Landry, but why the fuck would anyone selling a team specify that the head coach had to be fired by the buyer?  If it was an act of spite, why not just do it before selling the team?  Further, Bright was up to his ass in  alligators at the time he sold the Cowboys, I don't think he was driving a real hard bargain.
I've read pretty extensively on the subject and don't recall anything like that underlying the story.
To wit, https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1990-02-26-sp-1290-story.html
bright is aggy.

all rules about normal behavior are off.

fuck aggy.

There's about zero evidence that Stephen or Charlotte share Jerrah's pathologies, particularly as concerns the cowboys.

They haven't shown the initiative to improve the situation either, regardless of their resources...

Yeah, the blame is on them too, if only for being lackadaisical in the whole situation.

You couldn’t be more wrong.  You can talk a lot of shit about Jerry and his big ego, but I can assure you, Stephen and Charlotte are anything but lackadaisical or lacking initiative.

Like any father/son or father/daughter family business, they are limited by what the boss of the organization/father of the family allows.

I couldn't be more correct.

I didn't say the solution was moral or legally just.  I'm just saying they have allowed it for far too long, given their access and tools at hand.

What, you’re saying they should have just overthrown Jerry by now?  Maybe had him offed?  Good lord

Maybe my sarcasm meter is broken.  It’s Christmas, so I’ll just assume that’s it.  Either that or someone’s in the eggnog waaaaay too early.

When someone makes the decision to quit following the NFL, is there a document or something they sign that obligates them to post in every single NFL related thread, stating that they just don't watch anymore?

Back to the main subject, the Cowboys will eventually win again and when they do, all you haters can suck my cock, one by one. Merry Christmas.

After a certain point, daddy has final say. They have shown SOME initiative to improve the situation. It may not be exactly what we want, but Stephen so far from Jerry that it isn’t even close IMO. It may not be enough to overcome the incompetence of the family, but he doesn’t have the same ego. I’d almost be willing to bet if Jerry weren’t in the way, Stephen would run this thing a little bit more like a regular football team. He’s initiated enough changes with Will McClay and Chris Hall, that I truly believe he would. Again, those guys have had some misses lately, but they are widely regarded as some of the best at their specific jobs.

I get your point.. but growing up in MS my choices were the sucky Aints or the Falcons.. I had no association with either team for any reason and MSU had very little  skill players in the NFL for me to follow along with. (Eric Moulds only one that comes to mind..).

Funny enough If i did root for any team casually it would have been the cowboys.. but i didn't pay attention till the playoffs started.

But Dak isn't going anywhere.. if they can't come to an agreement..and he will get tagged for the year. So.. I just hope Jerry goes out and gets someone that can succeed. But I don't think Jerry's ego will let that happen. So Dak's gonna waste away his career...

I'm not talking about people from Dallas or even Texas.  I get why you're a fan of the local team.

What I don't understand, is why are people in random cities Cowboys fans?  (They're everywhere and the Cowboys are still the #1 brand in sports.) Looking back over the last 25 years, they are a petri dish of mediocrity.  Lots of seasons of Wade Phillips, Jason Garrett, Dave Campo, etc.  I'd be surprised if they were .500 since 2000.  Yet, there are throngs of people watching their games and spending $100 on Dak Prescott jerseys despite living in some random place.

So, really, why are people who don't have a tie to Dallas and are under the age of 25 Cowboy fans?

I know a lot of Cowboys fans and it's 100% because these people were born in the late 70's/early 80's and came of age watching them win relentlessly.  I know a bunch of 49ers fans in the same age demographic.
