I'm just saying, The FDA fucked us.  I don't think that was a Trump thing.

Lol.  Yes we all agree it doesn’t fall completely on Trump.  But he deserves plenty of the blame.

Congrats you found something Trump isn’t completely at fault for.  That’s not easy.

The Doctor in the house agrees that the FDA fucked us starting this.  I don't know what Trump could have done about that early on.?   I agree that Trump has fucked us handling a lot of stuff, but the beginning of the outbreak is not one of them.

If you read the actual article it is the FDA that kept us from testing so fast.

This is the best article that I have found of how it went down.  Please share yours.

That is an excellent article. The FDA is a sclerotic and toxic agency.  It needs serious revamping.

Also, props to Reuters.  It's a great, consistently fact-based media source.

I also wonder if CDC basically shutting down its military rival has created some stagnation, there, as well.

But what Trump could have and should have done is bring in private companies and say, "help us, what do you need"?  And then pressured FDA to ease up and CDC to let go.  I still think that's what he needs to do with respect to PPE.  The Defense Production Act is not the only way to go about this.

But shutting down the Pandemic response team? Refusing to listen to US advisors warnings about the situation in China saying "Xi told me it's fine". That's 100% on Trump.

Oh I’d agree.  But it’s comical the lengths his sycophants will go to, in hopes of exonerating their orange Jesus.

i get that trump supporters want others to share in the blame, but the buck should stop with him.

every single day he brags about shutting down flights from china.  yes, i know this isn't exactly true, as americans around asia could still get back in, and airports weren't following protocol, and whatever else.  but let's say restricting travel was a genius chess move brought on by all the latest intel that trump alone was privy to.

then why did it take 6 weeks after the ban for him to (1) take it seriously, at least in public and (2) do something, anything, about it?

the more this stretches on, the more it's starting to look like the travel restrictions might've bought us some time to get out in front of this.  but then we took that time, and did precisely dick with it.

but sure, fuck the fda.  those rascals.

How many times did Trump say in 2016 something along the lines of "I alone can fix this?"

How many times since 2016 has he said something to that effect?

These fools still won't just debate me on the facts of this article and I might agree.  They have so much hate for Trump, they can't help themselves.  I feel sorry for you all.

Donald Trump is a worthless cunt and he's making things worse.

It's a good article. But it doesn't exonerate Trump. It's another cog in a slow moving piece of machinery. He failed to heed the warning to stockpile testing. In fact, he was thoroughly dismissive of it, probably because he simply couldn't be showed a picture of it and it wasn't about him. And he was flippant and downplayed the best information and concentrated data from briefings that weren't available to the rest of us. An entire news organization that exists to maintain his existence followed suit. Senegal was better prepared to test their citizens than we were. Fucking Senegal. The buck stops somewhere. Not here, though. Maybe it stops on Senegal. This is what it's like to try to get a pothole fixed in Guadalajara.

I think Trump could have done better, and I think he is doing ok right now. Trump could have done better only if he was not the President. He is currently leveraging critical medical supplies based on a)Political Party affiliation and b)whether a governor is willing to pretend Trump is doing a good job.

This is something we haven't seen or will not see again in our life time. Lord have mercy, I wish this was true, but we have had several serious outbreaks of viruses and people are stupid.

This is the best article that I have found of how it went down.  Please share yours. The article is from a good source and I agree with Dr. Fauci that we failed in testing. But, there is a lot of between the lines and back story that the article leaves out.

Yes, I do think they would have been better prepared for this pandemic. Under Obama's presidency, there were outbreaks of H1N1 and Ebola. Obama was a supporter of a global health initiative and sending CDC agents worldwide to keep the US up to speed on fast developing viruses. After Obama left, the folding of the team that coordinated the various aspects of pandemic response created an information vacuum. It was that group of agencies that created a rubric from both H1N1 and Ebola to try and learn from the mistakes made during those outbreaks that was missing from the early days of the coronavirus.

Yes, Obama's CDC would have been vastly more prepared for this you fucking idiot.  THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN ON THE JOB. Jimmyjazz says it succinctly.

Well, yes and no. Since Trump has taken office, there have been around 6 heads of the FDA (some were acting). Former President Obama had 3: one long term, one acting, and his final commissioner, who held the office at the beginning of Trump's term. Trump has had 3 acting and 3 appointed commissioners. The longest serving was Dr Scott Gottleib who served just shy of two years. That is a lot of turnover in an agency. Gottleib was an American Enterprise Institute man and he returned to the private sector and there were two acting heads, one of whom was Brett Giroir. You may have noticed him up on the podium with the Task Force talking about all the testing? If testing was a holdup with the FDA, one would think he would have seen this coming since he used to be the acting commissioner, no?

The Doctor in the house agrees that the FDA fucked us starting this.  I don't know what Trump could have done about that early on.?   Maybe by listening to the outgoing administration? Dr. Gottlieb, the eventual commissioner of the FDA was on the 2016 Trump transition team and apparently decided to ignore the pandemic response packets that were provided by the outgoing administration. Oops.

I agree that Trump has fucked us handling a lot of stuff, but the beginning of the outbreak is not one of them.

If you read the actual article it is the FDA that kept us from testing so fast. No one is particularly arguing that point, but there is more to it than regulations. The President holds sway in that regard.

Also, props to Reuters.  It's a great, consistently fact-based media source.

I also wonder if CDC basically shutting down its military rival has created some stagnation, there, as well. The CDC has also had some turmoil. Redfield has only been in the position since 2018. Since Trump took office, there have been four people in that position-two acting and two official.

But what Trump could have and should have done is bring in private companies and say, "help us, what do you need"?  And then pressured FDA to ease up and CDC to let go.  I still think that's what he needs to do with respect to PPE.  The Defense Production Act is not the only way to go about this.

So, there are various issues with the President and his response to the pandemic. The article is not wrong in that the FDA and the CDC share some of the blame. But the buck stops with the leader(s) and the President is the final arbiter of that and he MUST accept responsibility.

The cold hard reality is this is what happens when you elect a guy like trump to be the president.

Congratulations trumpkins and baby boomers. You somehow managed in one generation to ruin the greatest county in the history of the world by supporting a known con artist, liar, cheat, and narcissistic shithead. You should think about that fact and contemplate it while sitting on your death beds, whenever that may happen to be. You ruined this country for your grandchildren. Sweet dreams.

I'm so tired of hearing about the flight "ban".

It's like declaring his casinos were successful because he applied for a gaming license.

So, there is no substitute for a President’s ability to break down bureaucratic silos.  It’s one of their most powerful tools. The ability to yell at the head of FDA, Sec. Defense. and CDC and say “Bring me a solution by Thursday!” is a power unique to DC.

Trumps lack of curiosity, combined with his staff’s innate hostility towards career staff is what allowed this siloed shitstorm to occur.  He’s at fault because he let this bureaucratic disaster churn for 6 weeks due to lazy incompetence.

This. Completely. And that is what my rather long-winded reply to BNB was about so thank you for saying it more succinctly--like jimmyjazz. I was on my high horse because I know that there are regs at the FDA that slow things down and errbody knows that one long timer that always picks the low hanging fruit and obsesses over that detail instead of getting things accomplished for the big picture, but that is for a LEADER to wade in and say, 'okay this needs to be done. What is fungible or waste or even necessary that we can eliminate to achieve our goal of more tests, etc?'

Oh, and Hell to the NO on the television censorship. Got damn dictator who doesn't even have good dictator hair. What a freakin loser.

Absolutely.  Here is the thing though.  The FDA is part of HHS.  Azar is head of the HHS. Trump is Azar's boss. And to Azar's credit, he is one of the few Trump cabinet appointees that is actually qualified for his job. Most are either incompetent or openly hostile to the agencies they oversee. Still, Azar has been forced to run with the "all gov't is bad" agenda dictated by his boss. Its no surprise that Trump and Azar have difficulty pressuring gov't agencies that Trump openly hates.   But worse, Trump really doesn't give a shit so he will never learn how to fastrack anything through the FDA while still having it thoroughly tested. Trump doesn't even want a CDC or FDA. So why do private companies need to ask for approval anyway?  Just go straight to market after they do their own trials.  The DOJ will lay cover if needed.

Actually, this is the modern GOP's problem in a nutshell. You can't run a good or efficient gov't when you are openly anti-gov't and hostile to your employees.  Its long hindered their governance when it comes to agencies like the EPA or DOE.  With Trump, its infected every agency, including the FDA, CDC, FBI, and CIA.

 Vindictive cunt.

He already knew that suing the PACs running the ads was a losing proposition because they are telling the truth.  Let him try to kill the licenses and send in the FBI to arrest station employees when they still broadcast.   And let Cuomo and DeBlasio send the NYPD to block the FBI from arresting them.  Let's just rip the band-aid off now.  Its time anyway.  To be honest, sitting through 4 years of a milquetoast Biden presidency while Fox News and Russia run a massive disinformation campaign against him is just wasted time.  Trump is a symptom.  He isn't the disease.  We need to neutralize the poison that gave us Trump if we really want to move forward.   Otherwise, this nation's days are numbered.

Also imagine the outcry from Fox if Obama made a similar threat.
