Nothing is ever her responsibility, everything is someone else's fault. She's never saved any money, and she's resentful of her place in life. She can't even seem to bother the last several years to get on state disability for some reason. When my parents move on or can't take care of her anymore, there's going to be some hard decisions to make in regards to her. I have my own family, and a son. I'm not interested in her living with us. Even if my parents leave some money behind, she's in no position to manage it responsibly or in any way to make it last. And those decision and burdens will be passed to me. So I feel your situation man.

We’re in the same spot with my now sister-in-law. She barely even speaks to her parents and blames them for every aspect of her life. Can’t/won’t work, requires the highest standard of care, fights doctors on facts/treatment and didn’t even bother to show up to our wedding.

We’re actively working with her folks to put a plan in place for her and have someone manage it, cause she would burn through the cash in a year otherwise. If that doesn’t work, I’m gonna have some harsh words and then wish her well, cause she sure as shit isn’t living under my roof with the way she’s treated her family.

Going way off topic here, but the family stories are really crushing. Anecdote: guy I know through business is hardcore Trumper. Fortunately don't have to deal with him very often but he always has a story about those lazy poors, they won't work, and so on. I have to be tactful and so I usually change the subject (I'm fairly certain he's addicted to FNC at this point) but I lost patience two months ago and finally asked about the working poor, are they lazy? He went off on a rant about their poor choices with not saving, buying smart phones. You get the idea. I changed the subject because it was pointless and I'm not going to change his mind and I cannot terminate this business. It was heartbreaking to think of the woman I know who would be classified as 'working poor,' who owns her own very small cleaning business. Did not attend college but has managed to keep her business up and running even during the pandemic due to very loyal clientele. She struggles  because for years she could not afford health insurance (which delays medical issues) and she had family members who suffered through tragic events (a car crash for one) and she helped them with the medical bills and getting back on their feet because to refuse would have meant disaster with the main bread winner deceased and the survivor disabled for months and unable to work.

In other words, in order for her to fit this man's idea of what it means to be self sufficient she would have had to turn her back on family and turn off the phone she uses for her business. I would say it boggles the mind, except our President turns a knife in the back of his family on a regular basis and I guess the Party of family values is so dysfunctional they cannot see it.

They are such an odd evil cult I couldn't have asked anyone to write a stranger novel.

Digdug had that post about twitter verbatim company and then posted it again.  I was making a joke about the repeat of repeat.  Looks like his redundant post was removed.  It was funny for five minutes.

The flip side of this are people who have grown up extremely privileged that make this same argument against the “lazy poors”. They are completely disengaged and can’t fathom how anyone would have trouble saving or that everyone has different circumstances. It’s maddening.

I actually fully support Trump's plan to eliminate payroll taxes for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I'm planning my retirement without SSI and will be fine. But secondly and more importantly, I would love to see the ultimate "leopards ate my face" moment when all of the idiot, racist Baby Boomers who voted for him lose their monthly checks in a couple of years. It would be the most satisfying schadenfreude in the history of anything. It would be fantastic. I really hope it happens, and I'm not being flippant or hyperbolic at all. I legitimately am rooting for it.

You guys just don't get it. This will be blamed on that socialist far left nut President Biden by every single R out there. And quiet a few of the "I don't care about politics crowd" will believe it, as well as a few dumbass dems.

Shit, they'll blame the far left radicals even if DoTarD is still in the whitehouse.

As for me, I prefer not to have to worry about driving around dead bodies of olds piled in the streets.

She took the money from selling her house and gave most of it to that sister. She wanted to give me and my other sister a large chunk of it however. I told her to keep it, she might need it when the Dotard-apocalypse comes. She pooh poohed that, and gave it to me anyway. I told her I'd save it for her, and when social security stopped its monthly payments, and medicaid stopped paying for her health care, she could have it back. This was about a year ago.

I'm about to call her up and see if she saw that tweet.

And tell her I spent the money.

Oh on that we totally agree.  I'd probably make it a condition that they have to stop voting, stop giving to any political groups, and never talk about politics in my presence. And I'll tell them it was their lack of foresight and gullibility that put them in this position to begin with, so they have already shown they don't make the best political decisions, so it's in everyone's interest, their's included, to stop doing those things.

But they have no qualms about these groups that they support reducing your social security, your medicare and your rights?  They know what they're doing.  I've discussed with my mom this same thing and she said straight up your social security is gone. They're not planning on their's being gone.  You are doing the right thing by kicking them to the curb because they fought for that right, said screw yours I want mine.  So let them have it, they earned it and are against socialism--assistance.  Let them eat what they ordered.

MediCARE is for the olds.  MedicAID is for the younger poors.  FICA tax funds SS and MediCARE.  MedicAID is not substantially funded by FICA.

Any long-term change in FICA tax is going to have to be passed by Congress and, as a revenue measure, such a bill would have to originate in the House.

So, I think for the foreseeable future, Trump's blathering about the payroll tax is horseshit.

You did the right thing, educated thing and were smart about it.  It's really her money, she should have it.  I would probably have told the sisters to do the same so that she unbeknownst still had savings in some way. I wouldn't scare her, just tell her she has an account with the portion of the house money she sent you.

There has got to be handout that i missed for how to blame poors for their own hardships and callout #1 is "but their smart phones".  Every fucking time this is the go-to on how being poor is all their fault because they spend money on frivolous things like tiny giraffes and smart phones.

JFC, a smart phone is not a luxury but a token of entry into a functioning society.  Plus they are now cheap AF.  You can get a new one for < $100 and nevermind spread it out on a contract for like $5/mo.

SSI is supplemental security insurance.  It’s for old poors.  It’s paid for from general revenues, and thus is not associated with the payroll tax.

Not really, no.  My older sister receives SSI payments each month for the last several years.  She is not an "old poor."  But yes, it does come from general revenue/DE.

Yep, I have a young nephew that's applying for jobs.  In addition to all the other miscellaneous shit that is done over the internet these days, it's nigh impossible to apply for a job without email and the internet and a cheap smartphone is more fiscally practical than WIFI and a computer.  If nephew walks into a place to apply for a job, they always send him to the internet.  He can't even really follow up on an online application in person.  It's kind of amazing.

I don't know the nuances, I probably should.  But Bateshorn said that was for "old poors."  Young and disabled is not exactly "Old Poors", right?

I caught a bit of Melania's talk on CNN today.  She was prattling on about women and their powerful voices, etc.

What struck me was "holy shit, she sounds like an evil Russian Bond villianess".  Now, I'm not one to hold an accent against anyone, but for fuck's sake, how do all these aging Trumpkins who lived through the Cold War listen to this Eastern European soft-porn grifter speak and not eat their own spleens?

The disconnects are awe-inspiring.  This is why I drink.  (Well, partially.)

All fair. And I know the statement was a bit strong. I'd certainly root for it if I could limit it to Trump voters. But like I said, it obviously wouldn't stick, and I'm not actually rooting for people all over the political spectrum to become destitute. But I'm certainly rooting a bit for them to get the fear of god put into them by way of Trump canceling the payroll tax, them having to sit there and pray and hope someone rational and sane fixes it, etc. Fuck them.

SS is supposed to be a safety net. I would means test that shit. If you are doing well, then pay for your vacation and country club dues yourself. I don’t care how much you put in. It’s essentially insurance. Be thankful you don’t need it for food and housing.

It's not a rant for you, though. Really. Because I'm pretty sure I could hold a conversation with you where we talk about all sorts of things and if the state of the country, economy, careers, or other policy specifics came up we could chat about it without sounding like a record stuck in a deep deep groove. It's annoying and very much resembles the President with his showers that don't have water, toilets that need to be flushed, MS-13 children trying to get across the border or some other nonsense. Except this guy is in his early 40s if I had to guess his age.

The crazy thing is that it's his administration's job to get it right, to safeguard the elections, to ensure that the elections are fair.  Saying that the elections aren't going to be fair when it's his administration that has been in power for four years is like say "we have failed in our responsibility to do what every other adminstration before us has managed to do.  Vote for us again."

He'll demonize processes that make voting easier, ie: mail in ballots, because it does not benefit him.

He'll champion efforts that make voting harder, ie: voter id requirements,  because it does benefit him.

He'll ignore efforts by foreign states to interfere with elections, because it does benefit him.

He has the word LOSER projected all over him. Not sure why people gravitate to him.

That is some pretty weak leadership, having "Biden's America" overrun your Administration like that.

means testing is the camel's nose to eliminating it.

from 1950 to 1990 the FICA rate increased 22 times.  those last few times were when it was generating huge surpluses, and the rate probably should have been reduced then, but that's another conversation.  anyway, it hasn't budged in 30 years.  we've got people in their 50s who've never seen it move, so they've been trained that the rate is fixed, even though it's not.

Lifeboat gonna lifeboat. Also, covid making folks take early SS now to keep the house! Early payout hit, but a SS system benefit over time as the olds lose 33% of their lifetime haul by taking it early.

My position on Social security has been the same for 20 years:

1) Remove the cap

2) Reduce the rate

3) Convert to means tested welfare that phases out at some multiple of the poverty level and drop the charade that it's a pension.

It's more fitting to make it a means test the opposite way: only give it to higher net worth boomers with the expectation that it should "trickle down" to lower net worth boomers.  We can call it "trickle down" economics or something like that.

Sort of.  Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) pays Social Security benefits to people who are disabled if they worked for long enough and paid enough money into Social Security to qualify.  Supplemental Security income (SSI) is disability payments to people who have not paid enough into Social Security to qualify for SSDI and comes out of general funds.
