Fair point.  But it was kind of part of the Patriot Act stuff, which mostly gets laid at Shrub's feet.

Supposedly Trump tweeted 68 times THIS MORNING! He’s in full campaign mindset.

He had to give a prepared speech, the sleepy kind he reads off a teleprompter. He always acts out after doing that. Add to it the fact that Biden got better ratings for his speech than Trump did for his and a full blown tantrum should be expected.

The American populace has no real understanding of what widespread civil violence looks like.  IMO, they don't have the stomach for what is necessary for a true, prolonged engagement.  Generations of a pacified populace will regress to that level quickly. The extreme minority of radicals will burn out quickly in a hot flame.

This will be true until it isn't.

Then people will act shocked that the masses have had enough of the bullshit.

"PORTLAND, AMERICA—Violent clashes between militias broke out late Saturday in the western provinces of America. At least one person was shot to death by right-wing militias, following the deaths of two earlier this week at the hands of a child soldier in the middle-western town of Kenosha."

Just someone writing this up the way that it should be.

We are a shithole country....and we’re so fucking stupid that we believe that the things that make us a shithole actually make us great.

Love ya, Brisket, but you fell off the deep end a long time ago.  We are nowhere near the level of violence that was prevalent in the late '60s and that didn't come close to destabilizing the nation.  Today is not even close to that level of neighbor fighting neighbor.  You seem to believe that movies like The Postman are a realistic possibility.  Your devotion to the "End Times" is just a symptom of the narcissistic grandiosity inherent in our species.  The apocalypse has been predicted since the first neanderthals ventured from the caves. We're not the special ones either.

A summer of riots and protests, folks running in the streets with weapons, extreme hate for the other from both sides.  The result?  Maybe a dozen dead and some property damage. In a country of 400 million and 3.797 million square miles.  That you view this as evidence that the centre cannot hold demonstrates that you've become as enthralled with baseless war porn nonsense as Kyle Rittenhouse.  He didn't strike the match that started the Boogaloo.  He killed two people and he will very likely spend the rest of his days behind bars. And a whole buttload of social media drama queens impotently prattled on.  Don't be one of those. Get a grip.

The last major country to fall apart due to civil war was Yugoslavia*  And that was a  country of enemies cobbled together in the aftermath of WWI, and held together by a dictator until his death.  24 million and 98k square miles.  Then the centuries old fights began again.  Not one person who knew that region was surprised.  There is nothing like that here.  Nothing.

In the 60's, there wasn't a massive depression with thousands out of work. That is what helped keep the country together. It isn't that way now and that it why it is a dangerous time. These people have nothing better to do but to let their anger and frustration out in the streets and get swept into doing stupid shit. If the rule of law is run rough shod and treated like a cafeteria plan where those in the administration pick and choose what to enforce and how to interpret the laws, then chaos is the logical result.  The social contract  is in danger of being completely broken. You think nothing like that can happen here for dumb reasons, like American exceptionalism or because you'd rather bury your head into the sand. We are no different when put under the same conditions as other countries were. We have to see the danger and face it rather than try and tell ourselves that we are better than that. No, we are not apparently. There is bad shit happening to the rule of law and no one is willing to stop those in power from fucking with it. It is sad and we have to right ourselves before it is too late.

I would agree with most of this, but the marked difference between now and the 60s is that you actually had adults in charge that had the overall good of the nation in mind, even if they had other motives as well.  The people in charge now have ZERO care for what happens to the people or this nation.  They are in it for themselves only and have been dismantling the very basis of our governmental structure for 4 years.  If they retain power this isn't just going to stop.  It will hit rock bottom.

I don't think brisket or anyone else is claiming that Joe Biden is America's savior. He's a way for us stopping bleeding out while we actually reform the country. Trump will kill the America we have known since TV came out with another 4 years that's guaranteed.

Blatantly breaking the laws and cheating cannot be the new status quo in America.

To me, the most concerning issue is that there is a well-developed far right paramilitary movement in this country that has been preparing for—and actively desiring—a civil war for decades. And their extremist views have been mainstreamed to a significant degree.

When members of that movement bombed an FBI building in Oklahoma 25 years ago, the public viewed them as nutcases and terrorists. Now, two decades and countless broadcast hours and gigabytes of right wing propaganda later, nearly half the country thinks these same extremists are defenders of liberty. If you think I’m overstating this, just witness the polarized reactions to things like the Kenosha shooting or the Bundy standoff.

Now more than any point in my life, Americans are psychologically primed to start killing each other en masse. It is a frightening, dangerous time. If Biden manages to win and actually occupy the White House, we have a shit ton of work ahead of us to unfuck our country. If Trump holds on to power, well... it was fun while it lasted.

The adults control the weapons. That's all that matters.

Uncle Joe is the little Delaware boy with his finger in the dyke. But don't hold that against him, he's our last chance at a democracy.

They have been tearing down shit a lot longer than the last four years. Try more like the last 26 years ever since asshole Gingrich’s fucked up “Contract with America”.

This is actually a way in which he has changed since being elected.  He allows others to use his likeness and trademarks for their own economic gain because it helps him politically.  The old Trump would have sued a place like this out of existence.  I wonder what Trump 2021 will do.

It would be awesome if he somehow loses control over his "brand" because he has been allowing others to openly use it for 4 years.

Yep.  This has been ongoing ever since the Republican Party decided that it wasn't going to concern itself with working across the aisle or actual governance anymore.  Can't say we weren't told this would happen though.

He's not getting a taste of all the T shirts, trinkets, and other shit that gets sold with his likeness on it.  He also isn't getting a taste of that Trump Burger money.  Right now, he benefits politically, and probably economically, from letting others use his brand and turning a blind eye to it.  I know he'll try to reel that shit in next year, but hopefully it will be too late.

Exactly. Be assured he's documenting every copyright and trademark violation. Gotta have that after election income.

I couldn’t find any polls on the question of Americans’ support for paramilitary militias, but I did find this

Poll: Nearly two-thirds of Americans support protests against racial injustice

https://www.usatoday.com/amp/5532345002

hard to believe that if almost 2/3 of Americans support protests against racial injustice that enough of them also are pro right wing paramilitary vigilantes to get that segment up to “nearly half”

That’s because 2/3 of the country are actually decent people. The rest are republicans.

Most people support the right to travel.  They don't support that right to drive dangerously.

It's a shame that 100% don't support the right to protest.  The question is, what percentage are in support of protester or counter protester violence or protester or counter protester destruction of property?

Trump is banking on getting a negative result on THAT question and massive amounts of disinformation in terms of who is at fault.
