It's somewhat amazing, in the current time, that the Constitution has been amended 17 times in the last 230 years.

For those who think the Constitution should be trashed, I wonder at what point they suggest we could have done so?

I don't think it really started to become "outmoded" until the 20th Century, probably right around the Depression and rapidly progressing since, along with political polarization.  The point being, a constitutional redraft prior to the latter half of the 20th Century probably would not have solved any of its present shortcomings.  The shift from an agrarian to an industrial and then to a service economy and the resultant divides between rural and urban areas and states seem to be the problem.

The nation has largely lost sight of the states as anything but convenient administrative units, and, right or wrong, that is highly inconsistent with the structure envisioned by the Constitution.

I think any attempt to hold a constitutional convention at this point would result in the dissolution of the republic.

I agree. But I also think the republic is teetering on the brink as it is.

Of the amendments, I always find it amazing that we managed to both add and remove prohibition on what seems like a whim. I think, if Republicans return to normalcy, there are some amendments on governance that could have broad appeal. Term limits, campaign finance reform, age restrictions for judges and elected officials. But if we are going to save the nation, the electoral college needs to be ended. Let the Senate alone check the majority. The founders wanted to protect the minority. They did not want the minority to be tyrants themselves.

I read something somewhere about the GOP really losing its way after the Soviet Union fell.  Seemed very accurate.

Having been alive during that shift, in my view that was well correlated but not really causal.  The rise of the Tea Party and Moral Majority in reaction to desegregation efforts was the sea change.  This was exemplified by Ronald Reagan and his dirty politics wrapped in an "aw shucks" veneer.  Getting shot helped him get a second term, in a very real way.  He wasn't as popular until he survived the assassination attempt.

It's not that there weren't characters like Jerry Falwell, Ollie North, Karl Rove, etc. prior to the late 1970's.  They just didn't have the national visibility.  If it wasn't part of Walter Cronkite's 30-minute daily newscast, people didn't ever know about it.

Right now, an anachronistic and broken Constitution and the institutions created pursuant to it are the only thing keeping us from the absolute horror movie that would ensue under an "honest representation of our political values."

You might as well write "it's important that we get what we deserve."  Fuck no, I don't want what we deserve.  Because what we deserve is a fascist dictatorship, total economic collapse, and a century of suffering.  I'd like something better than that, thank you.   I want grace, not what we deserve.

Grace would be nice for all of us, even those who do not believe in it.

See how easy that is Cult of Trump? I do not like you or your racist ilk in the least. I am tired of seeing the pain you are inflicting upon people based solely upon the color of their skin. While I  thoroughly feel that you would be getting exactly what would be what is coming to you if a Biden administration cut off all federal funds above what your state contributes to the coffers, I still think grace should be extended to you.

Giving up sports after college, the commander-in-chief developed a theory about exercise.

"Trump believed the human body was like a battery, with a finite amount of energy, which exercise only depleted. So he didn't work out," wrote The Washington Post 's Mike Kranisch and Marc Fisher in their book Trump Revealed. "When he learned that John O'Donnell, one of his top casino executives, was training for an Ironman triathlon, he told him, 'You are going to die young because of this.'"

The Dem's best shot was after Nixon. People thought the GOP might disintegrate back then. What did they do? They nominated the great villain Jimmy Carter, Donald Trump's virtual twin, of course.

Imagine if we would have given them LBJ, we would already have had a dictator for life. The United States of Johnsonlandia.

Would he have allowed the rise of the oligarchs? I'm not an LBJ scholar but I do know he was a ruthless SOB.

It's like there's an arson gang that goes around lighting houses on fire to demonstrate that emergency response times are poor. As they burn to the ground, they point out that they are open to building a brand new house, without smoke detectors.

They're saying government is inefficient and if you vote for me, I'll show you by breaking and burning it to the ground.

When someone states we get what we deserve, they're white and already understand that they'll get significantly less than everybody of color counterparts.  This includes myself.

This is incorrect. Post 2000 gerrymandering fundamentally changed the tenor of politicians, because they mostly cane from safe districts with vulnerability only in primaries. Congressional approval as a whole polls in the 20s-30s, but people *love* their own reps. There’s no incentive to compromise, and in fact, it gets punished. The electorate was different over the decades, and the politicians who represent us were also different.

yep, if you have the votes, there’s no need to compromise or even campaign to convince the folks who don’t agree with you. as long as the gop can continue to placate farmers and religious folks, they’ll be able to govern from a minority position.

this is our concern, dude.

So ruthless that he championed the Civil Rights Act knowing (he's quoted) the Dems would lose the South.

He didn't care about America at all.

Our Constitution is pretty damned good but it is a piece of paper. People drive the ship and thats what limits its effectiveness. The “fuck this shit” crowd need to know that diminishing the Constitution plays into the hands of chaos agents and violent actors.

Like I said, I'm no scholar of LBJ. I know he was shrewed and driven to bringing about The Great Society programs because he truly cared about his legacy and country. He had his blind spots and flaws but he was a masterful leader. I just think if you stuck him in the time after the Nixon resignation, he might have taken the opportunity to stay awhile like his mentor Roosevelt. There were laws against it but that might not of stood in his way. But maybe not, he was a complicated man.

Glad to see dotard wearing a mask.  Someone should let him know that drenching the mask in ether greatly improves its efficiency.

This will cause a mood, no doubt.

Yeah.....while that feels really, really good, and is hard to resist......he's a rabid dog, occupying the seat of POTUS.  That rabid dog has the power to do a lot of damage.  We're best off just getting him the fuck out of there, instead of incentivizing him to be even MORE of a destructive psychopath.

Nothing is off the table with him.   Seriously, he fucking SAYS so.  Sign an EO and claim that it bars Biden from taking the White House?  He said that.  Take action to discard unfavorable ballots?  He said that.  Send in armed irregular troops to intimidate opposition voters?  He said that.  Employ those armed irregulars to hold the White House no matter what happens?  He hasn't said that.....yet....but he's hinted like hell at it when he refused to agree to a peaceful transfer of power.

When you understand that he'll do anything, including kill literally every other human being alive, if it preserves his skin, then you realize the incredible peril we (and the rest of the world) are in for the next 6 months.

There is no doubt that another constitutional convention would result in the dissolution of the Republic. You think California can come to an agreement with Alabama and West Virginia now? So this let’s just start all over y’all talk will never work unless we want the republic of Texas.

From a CNN article in regard to Dotard's answer to the question about a peaceful transfer of power. It's all good, Susan Collins is concerned.

You mean the guy who chose to not run again because of the mistakes he made with the war?

LBJ meant well. He was looking out for the less fortunate. Unfortunately he was saddled with Vietnam and upholding Kennedy's legacy in a no win limited war. McNamara and Westmoreland led him seriously astray. I respect him for saying "fuck it" after achieving Civil Rights reform and trying to heal the country. He cared about his fellow man and those less fortunate. You better believe he suffered immense pain over the loss of American lives. He was a true Texan, not like these asswipes we have running things now.

This is the LBJ I remember.

I hate her so, so, so.......SO much.

Seriously, she may be the politician I loathe the most right after DOTARD.  Because she is pure cowardice and lack of principle, boiled down to its purest, spineless, most gelatinous form.

While I agree with you the story is more complicated than that. A whole lot of LBJ buddies and supporters in Texas made a whole lot of money from the Vietnam war and beyond. Brown and root, bell helicopter, etc.

He was a politician after all and a damn good one. But he made many mistakes his ownself when it came to that war. It wasn’t just thrust upon him.

lost in all of this is the absolutely great news that trump, once again, said the quiet part loud.

every other gop moron with half a brain would've answered the question, "of course, that's what makes america greater than any other country, that we hold free and fair elections, and we honor the results.  we are very pleased with our polling numbers, and i think you'll see come november, when we triumph, that there won't need to be any transfer of power."

then, you go and try to suppress votes and steal the election however you were going to all along.  but now it's out there that he's ready to fight the results.  so when the results aren't good for him, and he fights them, everyone will be ready, because he fucking told us he would do this.  obviously most of us suspected it already, but now it's a top story in the news and cnn can't stop talking about it.

this is the difference between a fuck like trump and a fuck like mcconnell or bill barr.  they do shady shit in the shadows, whereas trump can't wait to go brag about it.
