The right in this country WANTS us to be a fascist authoritarian state. It’s not subtle, or ambiguous. If the senate tomorrow declared that trump was a living god, and thus will be president for life, and trump sealed it with an EO, they would die from pure ecstasy.

The approach of the right is completely incompatible with a functioning, continuing republic. And they are never going away. There’s no fixing this. We’re done. The best we can do is delay the inevitable.

I keep being told both sides when it's really clear it's only one side wants to nuke the republic.

We're done.  It was a nice 230 year ride.

Park's closed.  Moose out front shoulda told ya.

They'll care when they go to pick up their check and it's reduced along with their parents social security benefits. They just don't know it yet because it's not affecting them now, right this minute.  When it hits their wallet, they'll suddenly give a shit.  But it'll be too late.

It's a really long read, but a good one...
Rolling Stone - The Unraveling of America
COVID-19 didn’t lay America low; it simply revealed what had long been forsaken. As the crisis unfolded, with another American dying every minute of every day, a country that once turned out fighter planes by the hour could not manage to produce the paper masks or cotton swabs essential for tracking the disease. The nation that defeated smallpox and polio, and led the world for generations in medical innovation and discovery, was reduced to a laughing stock as a buffoon of a president advocated the use of household disinfectants as a treatment for a disease that intellectually he could not begin to understand.
As a number of countries moved expeditiously to contain the virus, the United States stumbled along in denial, as if willfully blind. With less than four percent of the global population, the U.S. soon accounted for more than a fifth of COVID deaths. The percentage of American victims of the disease who died was six times the global average. Achieving the world’s highest rate of morbidity and mortality provoked not shame, but only further lies, scapegoating, and boasts of miracle cures as dubious as the claims of a carnival barker, a grifter on the make.
As the United States responded to the crisis like a corrupt tin pot dictatorship, the actual tin pot dictators of the world took the opportunity to seize the high ground, relishing a rare sense of moral superiority, especially in the wake of the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. The autocratic leader of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, chastised America for “maliciously violating ordinary citizens’ rights.” North Korean newspapers objected to “police brutality” in America. Quoted in the Iranian press, Ayatollah Khomeini gloated, “America has begun the process of its own destruction.”
Trump’s performance and America’s crisis deflected attention from China’s own mishandling of the initial outbreak in Wuhan, not to mention its move to crush democracy in Hong Kong. When an American official raised the issue of human rights on Twitter, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, invoking the killing of George Floyd, responded with one short phrase, “I can’t breathe.”
These politically motivated remarks may be easy to dismiss. But Americans have not done themselves any favors. Their political process made possible the ascendancy to the highest office in the land a national disgrace, a demagogue as morally and ethically compromised as a person can be. As a British writer quipped, “there have always been stupid people in the world, and plenty of nasty people too. But rarely has stupidity been so nasty, or nastiness so stupid”.
The American president lives to cultivate resentments, demonize his opponents, validate hatred. His main tool of governance is the lie; as of July 9th, 2020, the documented tally of his distortions and false statements numbered 20,055. If America’s first president, George Washington, famously could not tell a lie, the current one can’t recognize the truth. Inverting the words and sentiments of Abraham Lincoln, this dark troll of a man celebrates malice for all, and charity for none.
Odious as he may be, Trump is less the cause of America’s decline than a product of its descent. As they stare into the mirror and perceive only the myth of their exceptionalism, Americans remain almost bizarrely incapable of seeing what has actually become of their country. The republic that defined the free flow of information as the life blood of democracy, today ranks 45th among nations when it comes to press freedom. In a land that once welcomed the huddled masses of the world, more people today favor building a wall along the southern border than supporting health care and protection for the undocumented mothers and children arriving in desperation at its doors. In a complete abandonment of the collective good, U.S. laws define freedom as an individual’s inalienable right to own a personal arsenal of weaponry, a natural entitlement that trumps even the safety of children; in the past decade alone 346 American students and teachers have been shot on school grounds.
The American cult of the individual denies not just community but the very idea of society. No one owes anything to anyone. All must be prepared to fight for everything: education, shelter, food, medical care. What every prosperous and successful democracy deems to be fundamental rights — universal health care, equal access to quality public education, a social safety net for the weak, elderly, and infirmed — America dismisses as socialist indulgences, as if so many signs of weakness.
How can the rest of the world expect America to lead on global threats — climate change, the extinction crisis, pandemics — when the country no longer has a sense of benign purpose, or collective well-being, even within its own national community? Flag-wrapped patriotism is no substitute for compassion; anger and hostility no match for love. Those who flock to beaches, bars, and political rallies, putting their fellow citizens at risk, are not exercising freedom; they are displaying, as one commentator has noted, the weakness of a people who lack both the stoicism to endure the pandemic and the fortitude to defeat it. Leading their charge is Donald Trump, a bone spur warrior, a liar and a fraud, a grotesque caricature of a strong man, with the backbone of a bully.

No shit, Rolling Stone. But it doesn’t matter - the bulk of Americans believe “THIS IS THE GREATEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD” with the kind of purposeful blindness that defies imagination. And their worldview will prevail as we continue to plummet through the abyss.

It’s not just that we’re a failed state, it’s that we’re so committed to making sure that we are a failed state.

There's a reason people keep talking about the blue wave. The evolving population of this country is constantly shifting left. They're the ones that are delaying the inevitable. Some more shitty stuff will happen if they poach this election, but in the long run they're going to get swallowed by the wave regardless.

Or you could say they're burning it down in a desperate attempt to keep power and we'll just build it up better afterwards.

This is why we have a Democratic Party to channel and redirect the energy of the young towards issues which don’t threaten real, systemic change - like identity politics.    FDR was fighting to save capitalism but through that fight we got the New Deal, in the current fight we aren’t going to get shit but hashtags, more diverse corporate boards, and rube-Goldberg styled targeted subsidies and tax credits.  All has been lost.

Trump has a belief that you have a limited amount of lifetime energy in your body. He seems to limit his exercise to golf swings. He does zero exercise outside of that. From all accounts, he was an athlete in high school but gave it up after that.

Good (long) article about how Trump ignores the intelligence community. I can understand any president that doesn’t want disloyal people around him. Who would. But Trump seems to define disloyal as someone who isn’t wearing a MAGA hat and publicly declaring their political pref for him. I imagine that intel personnel have it drilled into their heads to not be political especially at work.

So about a payroll tax holiday.  Payroll taxes fund social security and Medicare.  A large part of his base is on social security and Medicare.

Seems like the Dems just have to repeat "Trump defunded SS and Medicare and he wants to make those cuts permanent" and the olds will freak out.

The payroll tax "holiday" is just a blatant attempt to buy votes.

Trump: "Vote for me and I (federal govt) will give not charge you the payroll taxes.  Vote for Biden and he is going to require that you pay that back tax."  As much as it's irresponsible, Biden may need to say that he will not back charge people.

I know there are many that have long argued that they would be willing to give up their rights to future SS or Medicare/Medicaid benefits if they're given an immediate payroll tax exemption. Trump is basically giving them the best of both worlds. No taxes but all the benefits.

Imagine if you were out somewhere and some random dude told you that executive orders were created by the lord. You would excuse yourself from that conversation and then tell everyone about this raving lunatic you spoke with earlier.

Also, I don't recall executive orders being quite this revered from say 2009-2017.

I think you're just looking for an excuse to level that criticism against Chuck Todd. That was a pretty insignificant stupid thing to say and it would've been a waste of time to derail the interview to focus on that. I know that it's a favorite shaggy/surly pastime to obsess over irrelevant minutiae but Chuck was on a schedule. He did press him on the lack of adequate testing. We don't need to hear another right-winger go off on a rant about how the Constitution comes from Jesus himself.

When North Korea would announce that Kim Jung-il was the greatest golfer of all time, we could all laugh at the absurdity that a leader requires 100% reinforcement of every aspect of their life. Now we're living that.

I forget the exact quote because good lord who can retain all this... but Trump said something in one of his recent crazy interviews like "I'm in a lot of meetings. As many as 2-3 a week". I guess we're supposed to call "executive time" work.

That was an excuse to skip some event, something having to do with "scheduled meetings." I can't recall what it was. I don't think it was John Lewis' funeral but it might have been that.

While Social security is definitely an issue, medicaid and medicare will be a much harder  blow for the older voters to handle.   Imagine you are 65 and older, your body is failing, and you have basically free health insurance.  Yes you would probably pay some into a supplement and Part D,  but the lion's share is gov't supported.  Now that free insurance goes away, and you, being in that failing physical age bracket have to look at 4 digit per month premiums instead.  Especially with no SS benefits coming in.   I couldn't even hazard a guess at premium costs, if they could even get insurance, due to pre-existing conditions.

Second point is yeah, no payroll taxes means more money in the worker's pocket.  But now do they have to choose between subsidizing their aging parents, or put something aside for themselves.  Incredible consequences will be the fallout.   People being put out of nursing homes, cancer victims being denied expensive treatment.   But hey, Trump and his fellow corporate moguls get to pocket a little more change, so that's best for all, right?  Trickle down and all that?

Also at what point are we going to start seeing draconian budget cuts at the state and local level? The right wants to scream about defunding the police, but the economy is going to do that well before the left does.

Cops will be the last thing defunded, long after health and education, streets and bridges.   Even fire and EMS will come under the knife before cops and military. The politicians need someone to stand between them and the people who are revolting because said politicians are ruining their lives, and their families lives.

So raiding FEMA means we are going to have the biggest hurricane season on record, right?

9 named hurricanes so far this year. NOAA thinks there are 9-16 more named storms in 2020. If those hit, the red states are gonna miss that $44B.

https://www.noaa.gov/media-release/extremely-active-hurricane-season-possible-for-atlantic-basin

'Extremely active' hurricane season possible for Atlantic Basin

August 6, 2020 Atmospheric and oceanic conditions are primed to fuel storm development in the Atlantic, leading to what could be an “extremely active” season, according to forecasters with NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, a division of the National Weather Service. Today, the agency released its annual August update to the Atlantic Hurricane Season Outlook, initially issued in May.

The 2020 Atlantic hurricane season has been off to a rapid pace with a record-setting nine named storms so far and has the potential to be one of the busiest on record. Historically, only two named storms form on average by early August, and the ninth named storm typically does not form until October 4. An average season produces 12 named storms, including six hurricanes of which three become major hurricanes (Category 3, 4, or 5).

“This is one of the most active seasonal forecasts that NOAA has produced in its 22-year history of hurricane outlooks. NOAA will continue to provide the best possible science and service to communities across the Nation for the remainder of hurricane season to ensure public readiness and safety,” said U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross. “We encourage all Americans to do their part by getting prepared, remaining vigilant, and being ready to take action when necessary.”

The updated outlook calls for 19-25 named storms (winds of 39 mph or greater), of which 7-11 will become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or greater), including 3-6 major hurricanes (winds of 111 mph or greater). This update covers the entire six-month hurricane season, which ends Nov. 30, and includes the nine named storms to date.

Spoiler

A comprehensive measure of the overall hurricane season activity is the Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE) index, which measures the combined intensity and duration of all named storms during the season. Based on the ACE projection, combined with the above-average numbers of named storms and hurricanes, the likelihood of an above-normal Atlantic hurricane season has increased to 85%, with only a 10% chance of a near-normal season and a 5% chance of a below-normal season.

“This year, we expect more, stronger, and longer-lived storms than average, and our predicted ACE range extends well above NOAA’s threshold for an extremely active season,” said Gerry Bell, Ph.D., lead seasonal hurricane forecaster at NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center.

Current oceanic and atmospheric conditions that make an “extremely active” hurricane season possible are warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the tropical Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea, reduced vertical wind shear, weaker tropical Atlantic trade winds and an enhanced west African monsoon. These conditions are expected to continue for the next several months. A main climate factor behind these conditions is the ongoing warm phase of the Atlantic Multi-Decadal Oscillation, which reappeared in 1995 and has been favoring more active hurricane seasons since that time.

Another contributing climate factor this year is the possibility of La Nina developing in the months ahead. Indicative of cooler-than-average sea surface temperatures in the equatorial regions of the eastern Pacific Ocean, La Nina can further weaken the wind shear over the Atlantic Basin, allowing storms to develop and intensify.

NOAA’s hurricane season outlook is for overall seasonal activity and is not a landfall forecast. Landfalls are largely determined by short-term weather patterns, which are only predictable within about a week of a storm potentially reaching a coastline. NOAA’s National Hurricane Center provides tropical weather outlooks out to five days in advance, provides track and intensity forecasts for individual storms, and issues watches and warnings for specific tropical storms, hurricanes and the associated storm surge.

"NOAA has the most highly trained and dedicated forecasters that serve to protect American lives and property. With improved forecast skill, new storm surge products, and new observations, such as GPS Radio Occultation, we are better positioned than ever before to keep Americans out of harm's way,” said Neil Jacobs, Ph.D., acting NOAA administrator. "It is now more important than ever to stay informed with our forecasts, have a preparedness plan, and heed guidance from local emergency management officials."

This hurricane season FEMA encourages residents in hurricane-prone regions to keep COVID-19 in mind when making preparations and during evacuations. Visit https://www.ready.gov/hurricanes for more information. Stay tuned to the National Hurricane Center for the latest about tropical storm and hurricane activity in the Atlantic.

You must be new to the Donald era of politics. Red states will never be left wanting. The Dems will agree to any aid package proposed in the wake of a natural disaster because they are human and won't let their fellow countrymen suffer. They will do this even though red state politicians not wanting to "bail out" blue states is the reason we are even in this water brained Mexican standoff in the first place.

SS, Medicare, medicaid and FEMA are not in immediate danger of being insolvent unless the entire govt is insolvent. I think you can argue we’re going down that road but I don’t think we’re there yet. If any of the above programs/depts need funds, the govt can just move money or print more.

trump is absolutely hurting years if not decades of America in shameless attempt to win re-election.
