2020 Golf Thread of Disappoint Yourself

93 in 40mph winds today. Then on the E9 I went 39. That combos with a 43 to be an 82 on my card. Handi is going down tomorrow.

I’m on the tee sheet for 4 more rounds this week. Back on track I hope.

Shot a 91 in high winds today also.  Shocked I shot a that well since I couldn’t get off the tee and struggled with everything.  Sprayed the ball out of bounds a bunch and had at least 5 penalty strokes with lost balls. Hoping it was not the norm and I will go back to at least striking the ball well again.  It was a total grind by a bad golfer to get a ugly 91.

Headed to the Prairie Club for the first time on Sunday and Monday, going to hopefully get about 90 holes of golf in those two days. Feel like my game is in a good spot right now but we'll see how things go.

After getting my game over the last 3 months into the mid to upper 80s consistently I went out and shot a cool 100 yesterday.  Couldn’t hit anything off the tee, blading irons, chipping and putting sucked, just brutal.  Went out today and started with a double bogey, triple bogey and quadruple bogey while being unable to even connect with the ball.  I have no idea what I am doing wrong but I stopped keeping scored after 3 holes and walked off the course after 12.  Cancelled my tee time for Tuesday as it is not worth playing when I am just unable to hit the ball suddenly and have no idea why. Worst thing is I have a tournament first week of July with 12 guys where we do a Ryder Cup deal every year with two teams of 6 and two days of match play and best ball all for the rights to a big us trophy cup.  I am now worried I will completely embarrass myself and lose the match for my team.

Been playing the 9 Hole golf courses (Butler, Hancock, Harvey) but can't seem to get in Lockhart. They tell me I need a pass to enter park but calling in had me waiting 52min. on phone. The website for day passes is like a maze. Finally found link... Looking forward to the weekend

Gonna be in ruidoso in a few weeks. Anybody play inn of the mountain gods course? Any thoughts?

Don’t gamble there.  The odds suck, you have to pay for drinks, and you are not allowed to drink the drinks you have to pay for in the casino.  I have not played the course in a long time, just a heads up if it’s your first time there.

What does this mean? You can't bring drinks into the casino that you bought at the bar? That would definitely suck.

Yes, that is the deal, and it does suck.  There is a little kiosk bar next to the casino area where you have to buy the drinks, and you are not allowed to leave that area with a drink.  This was 2 years ago, if you’re looking for more current info I won’t be the one supplying it.

My short game is totally gone. After the 39 with 9 putts on an E9 I have 100% lost it. Costing me 12+ strokes a round.

Every time I've completely lost my putter in the past it's been due to deceleration without me realizing. Tends to happen to me when I play slick greens.

Or maybe you should just try aiming at the hole.

Best advice I’ve learned for putter deceleration is to make sure your though stroke is as long as your back stroke, and -importantly- hold your finish until the ball drops. Knowing the position the club head needs to get to seems to reduce the likelihood that you slow to stop at the ball.

It really is. I’m just over 2 hours from there and that was the first time I’ve been there. It was a travesty it took that long to get there. I’m already planning a return trip next year.

We did Prairie Dunes in Hutchinson, KS, Two days are Dismal River, and two days at Prairie Club. That was a hell of a trip. We had one of the cabins at Prairie Club and it was stupid nice.

I know of them, any experience with them or reviews?

Great experience with CC.  That being said, look for reviews on the actual club fitters.  The guy in OKC is regarded as one of the best fitters in the midwest.  It was a no brainer.  I bought all irons, wedges, and driver from them.  I would not recommend buying clubs there with the exception of a driver.  Their driver pricing is pretty reasonable given your shaft is going to cost as much as the driver and they do a balance deal on the shaft to make it strike pure with little vibration.

With the irons, basically their gimmick is that they buy the irons and buy the shafts as if they are separate entities.  But if you go on the club of choice's website (cobra for me) you can buy the clubhead and shafts assembled.  Basically, they double charge you for shafts when they don't need to.  That's where they make a lot of their money I'm guessing.  On top of that, they won't waive the fitting fees regardless of whether you buy from them or not.

My opinion, research WHO you want fitting you at CC, get a fitting and tell them you need to get approval from the wife on purchase.  Go on the website of the clubs you would buy and buy them direct.  You'll have a print out of your specs so it should be very easy and will save you about $500.

Great experience all around though.

Thanks for the explanation and recommendation, sounds good to me.  Does this mean to actually get the driver optimized to my swing I'll need to spend $1K?

Also, how many brands/models did you test out before deciding on Cobra?

I've been using Callaway Razr driver/3/5/hybrid and Ping G30s and my Vokey wedges.  The G30s feel like I'm hitting the ball with a sledgehammer, I can get around the course OK but with ZERO feel.

Did you get fitted wedges too?

I saw some places offer to help you pick out the best putter but I'm very good with my Scotty.

They believe the stock shafts are inferior. They suggest you buy the club (because the manufacturers don’t sell head only), trash the stock shaft and buy a premium shaft. Yes, you could spend $1k.

When I did it, we tried 6 different heads, and none were better than my existing driver. So, we only ended up changing my driver shaft.

All of my irons were full replacements, trashing the new shafts and replacing them.

My wedges and woods were all shaft replacements only because I didn’t see enough value to replace those heads.

My putter fitting only resulted in him bending my shaft.

I spent $750 on my driver. G410 head with a fujikara speeder shaft. I might have paid up a little for the combo but wasn’t disappointed given I’ve paid $700 for an F9 that wasn’t fitted at all. The shaft balancing is a unique thing that I think really helps too.

with my irons, cobra had my kbs shafts as an option to build my own clubs. I think I would have saved $30/40 per club just ordering from the site. same with my wedges.

I hit my clubs then hit about 4-5 other heads and 3-4 shafts. Shafts first to get that dialed in and then you go after heads. My guy couldn’t get much more out of me with any combo and I was set to just get new shafts and then I hit the cobra heads and it was night and day. I was up to about 115 swings and he let me pick anything off the wall and give it a go. Hit some pxgs and some Mizuno blades but couldn’t hit either. Plus I was up to 125 swings and was just worn out.

on the putter, if you make putts then don’t change anything ever. I have a very mechanical swing and an old ping anser. Over the life of the putter I probably average 30-31 putts per round with a low of 23 putts in a round. I’m not changing that ever.

I’ve owned one putter in my 30ish year golfing life.  Ping, probably from the 80’s.  Grandfather gave it to me when I started playing semi-seriously.   Always been a pretty good putter, never felt the need to upgrade.  I’ve putted  with some of the new stuff, and I just don’t feel like there is some massive technological advantage I am giving up like there is with every other club.  Everything else in the bag has been upgraded many, many  times over the years, but I very well may die with that putter.

I played a white hot 2ball for maybe 15 years before finally getting a Scotty, so I’m with you on that. One thing you may consider, though, is trying some of the jumbo grips. If you don’t like them it’s easy enough to go back... but you’ll probably like them (possibly a lot)

This is the shit I straight up rebel against. The guy at CC fit me into an iron shaft that was definitely better than the DGs I'm playing now, but it wasn't $90 per shaft, extra, better. Combine that with them recommending a house iron that they were clearly getting kickbacks on at ~$200/head, and it's loony tunes. I'm a recreational golfer, and a damn good one, and there's no value equation in the world where I need ~$1000 in SHAFTS ALONE, just for my irons, and topping $300 a club. If you aren't trying to win money playing this game, find a head and stock shaft combination that you like, and just go play. You aren't handicapping yourself because you don't have tour-issue KBS Tour 130s, or whatever. Spend that money on lessons. Get fit for driver and fairway woods, and then buy the damn shafts on eBay. PgaTour superstore can change the shaft adapters for you for ~$40.

Oh, PUREing shafts is absolute bunk as well.

Edit - this sounds a little more angry than I'd intended. I thoroughly enjoyed the fitting process. But I looked at it as making sure I wasn't missing some major technological leap, not trying to eke out 5 more yards on the 7i. What I learned is that the irons I had fit me really well, and I could get new irons with similar loft/lie specs on ebay for ~$750, which is what I did. The guy was super nice, and didn't pressure me to buy, but you have to know they're going to try and make it VERY easy for you to drop $2k with them before you leave your fitting. Just know that going in - they don't make much money fitting clubs for $250 / 3hours. They make money selling clubs, especially premium shafts; that's the motivation. FWIW, I have confirmation direct from a club engineer at a top-5 club mfr that the "Tour Issue" DGS400 shafts that I play aren't special. They literally roll Dynamic Gold steel shafts off the manufacturing line, and the heavier ones get slapped with the S400 shaft label. Because they're at the high end of the weight spectrum, they tend to cluster closer together in weight; thus, they're advertised as "tighter quality control." But that's a result of the physics, not some special mfg process. Other shafts are the same, I have to assume.

Use care when buying off eBay. Make sure you’re buying from a certified seller for that brand as knockoffs are still an issue, though I understand they’ve done a lot to fix this.

I’m sure Cap did this, but for anyone reading in the future...

You seem mad. For a guy who blows it 50 yards past my best drive you should chill.

Massive +1 to this. I'm still comfortable buying from individuals and not just companies, but there's one golden rule - if the deal seems too good to be true, it is. That's it. Don't expect to "steal" something off of ebay, just pay fair market value for used clubs and you'll be fine. The goal on ebay is to let someone else handle the "new clubs" depreciation, and not you. Last years clubs at ~70ish pct of retail is what I normally shoot for.

If you don't even know what you want, a good place to start is a demo day somewhere.  Most manufacturers will show up and you can just kind of hit everything if you want and get an idea of what direction you want to go before you show up at a fitter.

Still playing a white hot 3 ball SRT with jumbo grip. Have a bunch of older and newer putters but just like the width of 3 ball. As I get older I started missing the sweet spot by 1/4 inch or so and 3 ball is so wide it doesn't matter.

As a lefty I used to love the spring mutil vendor demo day at Golfsmith. Only way to hit multiple sets of clubs and know that will have a good lefty selection
