BoB isn't terrible. He's a bumbling idiot at times like you say, but in general he's consistent and gets effort out of his players. Plus he has a budding superstar under center to make up for some of the bullshit.

When the Texans win it is usually in spite of BoB,  not because of him . Dak ain't pulling off what 4 did Saturday...and that's just one example

Just another manic Monday.

I wish it was Sunday,

that's my fun day.

I can tell all loyal Dallas fans McCarthy is simply more of the same.  The ONLY times the Cowboys have done well is when the coach has enough clout to tell Jerry to leave them the fuck alone and let them do their jobs.  Does that sound like a guy who was fired and has sat the last year out of the NFL? So Jerry and son will simply continue to what they have always done, take credit for any coaching successes while interfering constantly and taking no accountability for any negatives due to their interference.

So like Garrett ,his ability to say things to the team authoritatively to the team, and have the team not wonder if they will be altered or vetoed by the Jones' even as the words are leaving the man's lips. Now it's possible that you see a new flying pig blimp cruising AT&T stadium next fall, and Jerry and son no longer are the actual decision makers for the team.  But I will see it when I believe it.  It's the Dallas culture now, a team with a castrated head coach again trying to sire championships.  The names change but the culture remains the same.

The ONLY hope for Cowboys fans is that Jerry starts to feel his mortality and he does step back and let the coach lead the team. In other words is this formula true?

Jones mortality > desire for hands on management < chance for championships

Because it's the Cowboys and this is Surly.  We'd have gotten a similar thread from someone if the Cowboys had somehow hired Sean Payton.  Only with more Jerrah bashing (if that's even possible) because the Cowboys would have had to use a couple first round picks to get it done.
If Payton was hired, people would be dancing in the streets. That is how he is perceived nationwide. That he's a genius. And a wizard. And that McCarthy is a bumbling idiot.

I see Dallas fans say they would give up a lot of resources to go get Payton. They have been wanting him for a long time. And the exact opposite for McCarthy.

The problem is that most people have a really hard time understanding how probability works, and I imagine knuckle-dragging football coaches even more so.

The game theory stuff works if you ALWAYS follow it.... the problem is I imagine these guys selectively follow it, thus negating the statistical advantage of using it.

Because you just know that the first time the analyst guy tells them to go for it on 4th and 3 and it doesn't work, they aren't going to listen to him for AT LEAST the rest of the present game, and probably not much in the future.

Might as well put a 100 pound fat suit on Garrett and ran him out there, because that's what were getting.
A coach that doesn't use the tools that he has, makes horrible in game decisions, and doesn't know the rules of the NFL.
Mike McCarthy is a fat fucking retard.
There's another board that I frequent that is centered around gambling and is also full of pretty smart people. Lots of people on the board gamble for a living. Some on sports, some on poker, some on other things. To differentiate Mike from the other coaches named Mike in the NFL they called him "Fat Mike". There is a thread on the forum that discusses stupid decisions from coaches. The thread title is occasionally changed to whichever coach has done something stupid lately, but Fat Mike has been in the title for most of the last few years. Lets look back at some of the highlights.
In 2013 the nfl rule was if you throw the challenge flag on a play that is automatically reviewed such as a turnover or penalty then the play won't be reviewed and it's a 15 yard penalty. Less than two weeks after Jim Schwartz does this Fat Mike throws his challenge flag on a James Jones catch that got called a fumble. Our good friend Jordy Nelson picks up the flag and hands it back to Fat Mike before the refs see it

How does Aaron Rodgers feel about the play calling in that game?

Doesn't understand Causation and Correlation
When asked why he kept running the ball with no success even though he had Aaron Rodgers:
"one statistic I had... 20 (rushing) attempts... 20 attempts is what I felt would be an important statistic for us in the 2nd HALF"
So the dumb fat fuck thought since his running back got 20 carries in a lot of wins, if he got him 20 carries it leads to wins, not that he usually gets 20 carries in wins due to running a lot when up.
What do packer fans think?

Fuck Jerry Jones, this hire pretty much guarantees a few more years of no playoff success

I think we have a critic here

because the historical perception is that the Saints aren't the Packers.  the Saints had done exactly jackshit for 40 years until Payton showed up.  The Packers were a playoff regular in the Holmgren/Sherman years before McCarthy.  Holmgren and Favre brought them out of the post Lombardi 20 year desert.

McCarthy is not terrible. will he win a SB with Dak? Unlikely. but I think he might be able to maximize him way better than the clapper.

there was a guy at baylor. and jeff fisher available. fisher would have been a better choice than fat mike.

So Payton is regarded higher due to the history of the franchise, something him or McCarthy have no control over? Sounds ridiculous.

McCarthy took over a 4-12 Packers team and many wanted Fave gone. He just threw 29 picks and looked god awful. Let's not act like McCarthy took over some juggernaut Packers team. He resurrected Favre. He did not have prime Favre like the 90s version.

However you want to spin it, McCarthy and Payton are the same coach in almost every metric.

But one thing is for sure, McCarthy is not Garrett. I was on this train before and now feel ridiculous for even thinking it. Bob Sturm broke that down and he scoffed at why anyone thinks this. I'll lean to him since he has watched every snap of both of their careers. Garrett is a bottom of the league coach who took talented rosters and made them play worse than their collective talent. He wasted so many careers. How many has McCarthy wasted? Some say he wasted Rodgers. But he has a ring at least. That is not even close to what Garrett has done. I will not say Romo, Witten, Dak., Zeke, Dez, TO are all time greats and many others they had but to not even get to one single NFC title game with his rosters is pretty god damn bad.

I'm just telling you why, I am not saying I agree with it and I am not trying to spin it.  there is a recency bias as well as the fact that Rodgers torched him on the way out.  Payton made a completely horrible franchise, for its entire fucking history, a super bowl winner, yes WITH Drew Brees.  the media is going to spin him as a better coach, not to mention Brees hasn't told everyone he sucks.

If Jason Garrett took the Brows job and won the Super Bowl with Baker Mayfield, he would probably be Vince Lombardi by the time the media got through with him.

again I don't agree with it, I'm just stating why IMO people say Payton is better than McCarthy.

Sturm had a good point yesterday comparing the two on why one is viewed as a dunce and the other is gods gift to football.  Brees never challenged Payton with anything and they've had plenty of WTF moments and it was the exact opposite with Rogers/McCarthy.  Fans side with the superstars.  Probably doesn't help that McCarthy is fat as well.

The year McCarthy won the Superbowl the Packers lost the most starts due to injury that season. Shit like that would be unthinkable under Garrett.

Because Payton adapts his approach to the situation he has and every other NFL coach not named Payton, Belicheck, or Reid doesn’t

The NFC East is ripe for the picking. Washington is dreadful. The Giants are in turmoil. Philly is incredibly inconsistent and their star QB is an injury waiting to happen. I don't see any reason why a fairly successful coach such as McCarthy can't win that division in year one, Dallas has the talent.

And the Cowboys should be forever on every Longhorn’s shit list for having Switzer as a head coach.

The math will work when all things are equal, and you consistently run your strategy over an infinite time period.  In addition that probability is normalized over that period...”60% of the time it works every time”.  You may have a long string where it doesn’t work, follower by a long string where it works consistently.

I think coaches struggle because if you look at all-history of going for it on 4th and 3 on the opponents 43, the math says to go for it.  However your specific sample size is much, much smaller and has a lot of variability associated with it...there may be 100,000 situations in nfl history that says your odds of converting are 71%, but with that specific team/coaching/players your sample may be 3 all season and against that specific opponent/personnel your sample is 0 so there’s no way of knowing the odds.

So you blow it once and decide to never try again even though you may be on the cusp of 3 straight without knowing it.

Posted

I think its silly to dwell on the small decisions, the stuff fans notice when they go wrong. It's not that. A lot of it is luck. What matters is the overall scheme, game plan, chemistry and adaptability both long and short term. Its getting players in the best spots for them to succeed, and knowing when switch gears on a guy that isn't getting it, or see something special in a guy that should be getting more reps. The good coaches are better at that stuff.

Hell, Wade Phillips was great at challenges. That usually has more to do with the system they have with the guys upstairs than the head coach. And if you're having to decide whether to go for it on 4th and 8, the problem isn't the choice, it's the stupid shit that occurred previously to get in that bullshit situation. But fans are always going to dwell  on the one visible play that went wrong and forget about all the other crap.

I'll buy that.  I've said before that after being a Cowboy fan from childhood through the mid-80's until JJ bought the team, I'll go back to rooting for them when he's gone unless they play the Texans.  By the same token, Texan haters should not hold it against them for not taking VY in the draft. That owner and GM are gone.

If Matt Rhule and some guy I never heard of from NE’s staff were the other hot candidates, I’m fine with McCarthy as the pick. His staff thus far is seemingly less fat, we’ll see if they have any retardation soon enough. I also like that he’s not as close to Jerry as the clapping ginger was, so hopefully Jerry can pull the trigger sooner if it’s not working out.
