Have we heard a motion to "declare Donald J. Trump the bestest president ever, and dismiss all removal proceedings against him, and in fact declare that he can't ever be removed from office by anything, even an election?"  Because that's the one I'm waiting for.

Otherwise, I fully expect this to be a complete sham, and will pay little attention to the pre-ordained conclusion led by Senators who have proudly publicly proclaimed that they will NOT adhere to the oath they just took.  Because, you know, lying under oath is HUGE -- why, the GOP told me it was a clearly impeachable offense.  But when GOP Senators do it, well, that's just good bull or something.

despite your pessimism, it appears to be trending the other direction. I don't think McConnell had the votes and support he thought he did

And don’t quite get Mitch being so outspoken about coordinating with the White House.

what is he gaining by so publicly claiming that he’s creating a sham trial?

The White House already knew this would be the case, so why announce it to the world?

This is just the evidence from the House investigation.  Previously, it would have been allowed for admittance based on a successful motion, and vote. It would have been silly to refuse to admit the House evidence, as it is already out in the public. This just protects Republican Senators from taking a wedge-issue vote on whether to admit the House evidence, because you know there are some Trumpsters who are going to be pissed about any vote that appears pro-impeachment, and most sane people realize that House evidence should be admitted.

I think it's equally likely that Mitch fully planned on these "last minute" changes to be the plan, but he framed it in a way that a few vulnerable senators get to look like they forced concessions.

And I think this ties into my post right after yours. Could Mitch coming out and proclaiming that it’s a sham trial with a foregone conclusion of acquittal have actually cost him some initial republican votes on things like witnesses and documents?

Everything this Sekulow guy says is bullshit.

I'm trying to track it down, but I am almost positive that Rudy texted Parnas that he was going to contact "Jay" about Shokin not getting a travel visa.  It's not surprising at all, as Sekulow has been pushing anti-Dem conspiracy through his ACLJ for ~15 years.  The difference now is that he has been elevated to the position of being one of the President's personal attorneys.

...

Found it: "Gave Jay your number" January 11, 2019

(In the next post, Rudy sends Parnas Jay Sekulow's contact information.)

I called Cornyn's office this morning about the time they would be arriving to work, so even if things go south, I took a swing at the brick wall. I'd rather they had one thousand calls saying 'do the right thing and hold a fair trial/do not acquit' than simply go on about their business w/o objection. I haven't called Cruz yet, but he's next on my list.

Mitch is signaling to other Republican Senators that if they aren't in line with Trump, then Trump will work to primary them, or at least signal to his base not to support them.

It boils down to "you are either with President Trump, or you are opposed to everything he stands for and are a Democrat/traitor!"

I saw it more of a message to Trump and Trumpsters.

Trump occasionally gets cranky on the shitter and tweets out complaints that the Republican Senate is being stupid and weak about fighting the Democrats.  McConnell has to publicly pledge his allegiance to the King, to help quiet his terrors, and to make sure the Trumpsters show up to the polls.

Posted

McConnell would do well to take a look at the calendars in some of the states of some of his "lockstep soldiers"  A number of those states in Class 2 have primary declaration deadlines that have either already passed or will pass while this Senate trial is going on.  Trump can't threaten to primary some of these folks if those states have already closed to the statewide primary process.  Unless of course they're gonna start fucking with myriad Secretaries of State.

But in Class 2-closed already are Alabama, Arkansas, California, Texas, Illinois, North Carolina, Mississippi, and this week-West Virginia.  Primary filing deadlines that will close during what is likely to be the duration of the Senate Trial:  Nebraska, Georgia, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Virginia, and New Jersey.  Look at the GOP senators in those states, those are the only difference makers.

You are making it overly complicated. Jones winning was like Haley’s comet. Trump idiotically supported a pedophile and still lost by less than 2%.  End of story. Any other R will win in Alabama. ANY OTHER REPUBLICAN. Jesus people. Jones’s impeachment vote means nothing. Democrats aren’t winning that Bama seat. Move on.

If they run Tubberville it might split the Roll Tide vote enough to let Jones sneak in again.  Maybe the only thing worse than  running a pedophile would be running a War Tiger.

They are voting on amendments to what I think are the rules for the trial.  Amendments like should they subpoena various documents from the White House, State dept, etc.

R's are voting no, D's are voting yes.  So, R's have it

Couldn’t get 4 votes for witnesses. This will not bode well for GOP in November. The next person hopefully suggesting Mitt Romney or Susan Collins will have a spine should be ridiculed mercilessly.

As someone on twitter just suggested, if the R's continue this coverup the house should just introduce a new article of impeachment every week or so. fuck them. keep them tied up in chamber (not like they were doing their job in the first place). As more evidence comes out, I don't see how this can continue to be swept under the rug.

Sen. Susan Collins, a Republican from Maine, just issued a statement on the impeachment trial and hinted some support for a motion on witnesses.

A key line from the statement indicates it is “likely” that she will support a motion to subpoena witnesses later in the trial after both sides present their cases.

hahahahaha.  Collins will negotiate some deal with McConnell in which he will immediately refuse to honor.

I'm not saying they will eventually get 4 votes for witnesses, but that ship has not sailed yet. Murkowski, Romeny, Alexander and Collins have all indicated that if they were to vote to allow witnesses, which they may or may not, that vote would come after evidence has been presented, similar to the Clinton impeachment. What they are voting against now are amendments that would ensure witnesses prior to evidence being presented. There is a lot to be outraged about here and I'm sure the "moderate" republicans will let us down like they always do, but to be fair to them they have said the whole time their vote for or against witnesses will come after the presentations. Patience grasshopper.

This is a set up.  It allows them to say, "Well, I've heard all I need to hear from the evidence.  Don't need no darned ole witnesses, mang."

I highly recommend the expat lifestyle.

It's amazing how much less stressful my life has become since fleeing the US for the Czech Republic last week.

Instead of being inundated with Trump's stupidity I now have to actively seek out his latest shit-baggery, I also don't have to fear mass shootings, worry about the national debt, or going bankrupt if I get sick...oh, and people actually care about the environment and what goes in their food.  It's quite refreshing.

The GOP, gun nuts, and Evangelicals used to scare me...now I can just laugh at their stupidity from afar.

I'm sorry, I haven't seen the "Hot Czech girls I've seen being an expat" thread yet.  Can you provide a link?

I don't disagree, but that doesn't mean it's accurate at this point to claim that they have already voted to not here any witnesses.

Democrats should just show up with Lev Parnas and announce they are calling him as a witness, rules be damned. This whole process is a joke.  Why not have fun with it? The optics of Republicans blowing their gaskets and probably leaving the chambers en masses will be worth it from a PR perspective. It would literally be Rs running away from the truth.

If McConnell is gonna rig the game, then change the game. It’s not about winning the trial. That ain’t happening.  It’s about making the Rs looks like clowns at every turn.

Bringing Parnas there would be like showing up with Airman O’Malley and Airman Rodriguez.

You can't really see it, though. The camera is focused on the speaker and occasionally Roberts. Every so often at the beginning or conclusion, there is a long range pic, but not that often. Nothing like the House or the Inquiry where one could watch side conversations, etc. I figured one reason McConnell did not allow it was so that the public would not see that there are few Republicans paying attention with the Democrats speak. They've made their decision.

That being said, Val Demings is showing all sorts of Parnas info. It's too bad her time slot is not great because she is a pistol. She could take Devin Nunes and stuff his head down into his socks before he could get squared up to fight.

They don't, except they get real squirmy when their constituents get in their face. Many won't meet with voters anymore unless it is in a very controlled environment. It's pathetic. That they've hoodwinked people into thinking that all the moneyed  'elites' are socialists or that all educators are liberal, or that scientists are 'mad, crazy, disgruntled' hacks they have put themselves into a position of their own making and it is nobody's fault but their own. They don't care and that leads me to believe that they are going to cheat all the way through 2024 and beyond. The base will be just fine with that, if they economy stalls after being propped up until after November it won't matter anyway because they'll have the public on a spit and we'll be roasted and unable to do anything about it. This trial has no surprises, but I had a glimmer of hope until that first vote. There will be no witnesses despite the polling, despite the pleas from the public that call for a fair trial unencumbered by lies.

ok, so i've been unusually busy today - what have i missed?

saw the days to present case got upped (3 days per side?).

saw that house evidence is automatically submitted into this trial (instead of pending a vote on it).

is that about it?  are we thinking mcconnell "gave in" on these because they were obvious and now he seems flexible?

has jim jordan taken his jacket off yet?
