I think we're currently in the incubation period. Looking at comparable flu pandemics like the 1918 pandemic, we're still in the first stages

1918 isn’t comparable just because you use the word comparable

and one of those dx'd with corona in King Co. WA was a US Postal worker.  someone half joked over the weekend about an Amazon warehouser having it.  No idea if the USPS person was a mail handler.

LOL back 2u.

If the lives of our citizens were a matter of NATIONAL SECURITY, like the military industrial intelligence incarceration petrochemical banker-dick-sucking complex, we would have a COMMAND ECONOMY healthcare system, with enough beds and doctors to go around, and a competent non-assclown version of command and control by everyone involved in the response up to this point.

oh yeah, a special shout-out to big pharma for how they bent Obama over the barrel with no lube at all.  Just like Comcast and AT&T that were given jabillions to build infrastructure and didn't, big Pharma could have spent the Trillion in profit windfall over the past 4 years and oh, i don't know, maybe invented some flu-fighting nanotech or something.

You think my son and three of his jack ass buddies were at North Star Mall eating Chick Fil A at exactly the same time this dipshit was reported to be there?

It was nice knowing you all. In lieu of flowers, please donate giant ceramic crabs to  the Surly Bevo Wreath Fund.

I thought the largest store of giant, ceramic crabs in North America was at the Cumsteen residence and not currently for sale?

We could have emergency hospitals up in a matter of hours, and I believe we will if it comes down to that.

Ironically Italy has state-provided healthcare and guess who is doing a great job of testing?

Well, I'm not necessarily a universal healthcare guy, but I can tell you that at the least people wouldn't be getting charged $1500-$3000 if they test negative for this thing, which has been reported several times in this thread.

Nothing is free my friend. That money would be charged elsewhere.

I'm wondering if it is better to just go out and catch this now intentionally before the system gets overloaded.

Make a quick trip up to Washington

Since Costo is headquartered in Kirkland, can I just go to Costco? Surely the virus is floating around there.

I know this toes the line with the CR-related thread but I gather that the state of Texas is going along 100% with the CDC regardless if it makes sense or not.

Friend who works for a state rep has the impression Texas is relying upon/taking direction from DC on everything.    Legislature is out until next year though, but she’s trying to find out what’s going on (they just put her dad in a nursing home, so she’s rethinking that).

But hey, city of Austin has been monitoring international travelers for three weeks now.  Well, calling and emailing and getting their temperatures every day, so we got that going for us.

Need to ask her if there’s any chatter about SXSW.

What does that mean 'Legislature is out until next year?' I don't keep up with this shit.

political bullshit to the proper thread --->

politics is current and future events.

the past is history and is fair game in the discussion of (macro)economic constructs.

if intended/directed to/at me, i maintain that my posts are NOT political.

The CDC morons forget to test for Telenovela Coronavirus.

In San Antone, they need to test for the cabrona virus.  That pendeja can’t be going to the mall when she’s sick.

It was more directed at the comments regarding healthcare finances, as i thought they had veered away from pertaining to this particular ourbreak.  not scrolling back to see if you were involved.

Washington researchers have some bad news on the latency period:

Cryptic transmission for the past 6 weeks - oopsy.

Let's hope the kill rate and transmission rate is very low.

This is why I’m currently wondering if testing is helpful at all, other than for the number crunching.
if people are feeling bad and want to be tested, then they’ve already spread it and have it if it’s a positive test. Quarantining at that point may help some, but how much?

Hahaha holy fuck. We are wasting way too much time and money trying to contain this thing.

you assume there is no value is trying to contain it even without 100% containment.

@atomheartbevo made a ton of sense with this post:

Nobody here is saying we can fully contain it.

Using your example, if we could quarantine 90% of the people coming in to the US with the virus, that would be fucking awesome.  Absolutely fucking awesome.  Because, we will have a much better chance of providing the needed care for the cases that result from the 10% that slipped in.

I really don't think you comprehend what 5,000 hospital beds in Austin or 20,000 beds in Houston means.   Maybe one of the Surly med professionals can help - @ChiTownDoc or somebody can inform you, but most of those beds are not empty most of the time.

I also don't think you comprehend what a 10-20% hospitalization rate means, and I really don't think you comprehend how intensive this care is - this isn't the flu where it kicks your ass for a few days - this is putting a good chunk of people into a very limited supply of hospital beds for 2-3 weeks, and they are having to be treated by medical professionals in PPE gear.

And I wonder how much PPE hospitals have on hand, when the Health and Human Services Secretary is saying they only have 30 million masks and need 300 million more.

limiting exposure = a good thing.
