As far as not being as contagious as the seasonal flu, I have my doubts also. Maybe it is the definition of contagious that they are using, but it sure seems to spread around cruise ships and nursing homes pretty fast. And I have never seen a map showing the spread of the flu each season, but the spread of COVID-19 around the world from just a few cases in early January has been impressive.

Yes, but keep in mind that while the health authorities (CDC, WHO, etc) may keep track of individual flu strains spreading from place to place, most average citizens don't pay any attention to that. Similarly, if a known illness is present in far apart locations, say, China and the USA, a person traveling from one to the other can be a vector to infect someone in his destination and we'd never know (or blame him for it) because it's already in both places.

In other words existing illnesses probably spread from continent to continent just as easily and rapidly, we just don't pay attention to it because it's already in both places. The only reason we are noticing the spread of COVID across continents right now is because it's relatively unique and we are paying attention to it. I bet if we tried (or had the ability) to map individual flu infection vectors on a global scale, it would appear to be a very similar rapid spread across continents. China -> US -> Italy -> Iran -> China and so on.

As far as cruise ships and nursing homes - kind of the same thing. Lots of diseases already spread on cruise ships and nursing homes because they are relatively confined and captive spaces with dense populations for extended periods of time sharing toilets and dining facilities. People have been advised to wash their hands on cruise ships for a long time predating COVID.

None of this is meant to disagree with your point about it being contagious, just saying that the anecdotal data we have right now about how it spreads doesn't necessarily mean it's super contagious because all diseases spread similarly to the maps and anecdotes we've heard so far. The stuff about "can be present on surfaces for 7 days" and "14 day incubation" is much more indicative IMO.

I definitely am not on the front lines.  Those are the ID guys and epidemiologists etc.  I just have patients who rely on ID and I can feel their pain.  They being patients and ID docs working without being able to test.
Restrictions being lifted on testing was very helpful In theory - Now we got to get the tests out to everyone.  With no testing how the hell do you control this shit?

Interesting take out of Hong Kong. Bitch, give me back my mask.

The thing about the masks is that they don't necessarily reduce the risk of infection for people who aren't sick, but they do reduce the risk of people spreading it who are already sick. But if you don't know you're already sick, then it makes sense for everyone to wear them anyway just to be sure.

Yeah, you knew that the show would go on when they continued with the cookoff even through a Mandatory Boil Water event from that water mane rupture.  I couldn't believe the restaurants were all open as well considering it's unsanitary to operate a restaurant in a Boil event.

when we had our boil event in austin last year most restaurants stayed open.

Okay, great. Now where can I get them?

The other thing about masks is that they prevent you from touching your mouth and nose with your fingers. I am personally wearing them over every orifice these days.

I have personally verified this to be fake news.

Your mom is never covering any of her orifices, when I see her. As a matter of fact, they are all quite open to allowing anything to enter.

Casinos

Right, as I was walking around Vegas at a conference last week with people from all over the world, I couldn't help but think Vegas has to be one of the ultimate spreading locations.  Especially because so many people are only there a few days at a time.  Tracing would be impossible on the Strip until employees begin to be taken down (which is only a matter of time).

Yeah, i'm pro mask....for others.

Yup. Even if it were effective, I can't see a bunch of Americans voluntarily wearing masks out in public...maybe after a couple hundred thousand people die. They'd rather get sick.

I think I saw a report that said the US only has 1% of the masks needed for the population anyway.

/no CR

There are people at certain rallies saying they dont even believe the virus is real.

Wait until the Kardashians debut the new Dolce & Gabbana masks.  They did the whole "latex suit" thing yesterday.

My early-teen daughter will wear them as soon as they're available at Brandy Melville.

As we discuss this issue, some take the view that this virus has been circulating in our cities for weeks and most who contract it are simply asymptomatic or experience only minor symptoms. But here we have something of a control group, no?

12 of 30 first responders are showing flu-like symptoms. How many will end up in the hospital? How many, if any, will die? Seems like an important bellwether of things to come.

Is there evidence that a significant percentage of people who get infected by the COVID-19 never develop symptoms (or develop very mild symptoms), or is that an assumption based on how viruses typically work? Have the 30 first responders been tested?
