So you are in charge of flying millions of people around the world who literally put their faith and their lives in your hands and you can't even fucking sign your name! Jesus.

He's good

I've been working with a physician who had several US conferences coming up that have been canceled. Husband was supposed to attend a conference in LA in a couple weeks which was also canceled. Anyone traveling soon will probably have the luxury of a pretty empty plane.

Interview on CNN is interesting. Woman's mom is at the Washington Nursing Home. Brother also tested positive. Sister is ill. She is waiting for testing and not been told to quarantine.

Right, as I was walking around Vegas at a conference last week with people from all over the world, I couldn't help but think Vegas has to be one of the ultimate spreading locations.  Especially because so many people are only there a few days at a time.  Tracing would be impossible on the Strip until employees begin to be taken down (which is only a matter of time).

Fly there in 2 hrs.  Wish me luck.

As we discuss this issue, some take the view that this virus has been circulating in our cities for weeks and most who contract it are simply asymptomatic or experience only minor symptoms. But here we have something of a control group, no?

12 of 30 first responders are showing flu-like symptoms. How many will end up in the hospital? How many, if any, will die? Seems like an important bellwether of things to come.

Excellent observation. Too bad there weren't 1000 first responders!

Serbs jumping on the imported bioweapon bandwagon on the Chinese side.

Then Dacic -- a former prime minister and onetime aide to Serbian strongman Slobodan Milosevic who led their Social Democrats back into the political mainstream after the military conflicts of the 1990s -- twice went on Serbian television to suggest that the coronavirus was a foreign plot targeting the Chinese economy.

"China is the second-largest economy in the world today, so it's not out of the question that [the coronavirus crisis] is part of a special war against China," Dacic first told privately owned Pink TV.

He did not elaborate.

Two days later, on March 1, Dacic told Serbia's public broadcaster: "China is a very cautious country. They're not coming out with it yet, they are testing, but I've heard information from them that they suspect that it is not of organic origin but rather was created in the laboratory and now needs to be further determined how it originated, why it originated, and how it got to China."

Chinese officials have never publicly alleged that a foreign power was behind the outbreak, which is thought to have begun late last year in Wuhan, China.

Yes. Korea and the WHO report on China

Yes, also in addition to the reports from a couple days ago that the majority in Italy are recovering at home with mild symptoms.

The civil protection agency said 149 people had recovered from the virus, up by 66 since Sunday. The authorities said 742 people had been admitted to hospital, with 166 in intensive care. The vast majority of those infected had shown few or no symptoms and were recovering at home.

If this outbreak came from a Chinese lab, China should get sued for damages.

Oh and what do we make of some Iranian general saying he thinks this is a biological weapon released on Iran?

That dying people lash out at their enemies?  I imagine Iran is going to be remade after all is said and done, hopefully for the better.

I'm sure Surly can do something with this (hope the image embeds). Origin and evolution of pathogenic coronaviruses. Friggin bats.

Did someone say the London Book Fair was cancelled? This better be some kinda sick joke...

bad news...

https://www.theguardian.com/books/2020/mar/04/london-book-fair-cancelled-over-coronavirus-fears-amid-growing-anger?CMP=share_btn_tw

One of the world’s biggest international literary events, the London book fair, has been cancelled over coronavirus fears, amid growing anger that the delay in calling it off was putting people’s health at risk and an unfair financial strain on publishers.

Organiser Reed Exhibitions announced on Wednesday that the escalation of the illness meant the fair, scheduled to run from 10 to 12 March, would be called off. Around 25,000 publishers, authors and agents from around the world had been due to attend the event, where deals for the hottest new books are struck.

But the event was already set to be a ghost town when it opened its doors, after publishers and rights agencies began withdrawing en masse over the last week. Some of the world’s biggest, including Penguin Random House, HarperCollins and Hachette had already pulled out, as had Amazon and a host of literary agencies including Curtis Brown.

Not parking widebodies. Redeployed for hub to hub, transcons, and leisure destinations.
