Noo, guess I'll just have to live with the trillion vids online. Might not be able to make it.

This fucking sucks. All of this hysteria for something that’s going to wind up looking a lot like the flu. The pandemic sweeping the globe is panic.

You can ask @Bozo_Casanova and maybe @Lobo and a few others, but my impression of Adler is that he would not have done this just because somebody called up worrying about their granny in Sun City, or at one of the nursing homes around town.   Earlier this week, and even last, he was making it clear it was going to take place, and he even publicly claimed he did not have the power to shut it down if he wanted to.

He seems pretty corporate whoreish to me, and given the numerous real estate holdings he’s involved with around town, and the crowd he runs with, he or close friends probably benefitted from SXSW financially.

Adler can’t run for mayor again,  but I can see him running for other offices, and if this was like the flu that you think it is (it’s not) this has the potential to derail his future political aspirations, something he’s not going to piss away.

So the question is what made him do a 180 on cancellation.  We still don’t have any positive tests in Austin that are public.    It’s possible the CDC wanted it canceled,  but Adler is a Dem, and he harbors other political ambitions.  He would have made the CDC go out there and do the dirty work themselves, rather than risk his career.

There’s enough inventory to get us through a few weeks.  I may do a turn-back-the-clock to 10 years ago.

Just went though TSA Precheck in Terminal 1 at ORD. First time I have ever walked up to it and had zero people in line. Anecdotal but relatively speaking given my hundreds of time through here, this place is empty. So odd to see on a Friday night when everyone should be heading home from work trips.

I’m in A terminal at DFW right now and it’s practically empty for a Friday night.

If he's a corporate whore and all the corporations had pulled out he wasn't going to upset his johns now was he?

Never more have we needed our president/the world to stand up and make a speech like this:

Good morning. In less than a week, men and women from here will join others from around the world. And you will be launching the largest viral battle in the history of mankind. "Mankind." That word should have new meaning for all of us today. We can't be consumed by our petty differences anymore. We will be united in our common interests. Perhaps it's fate that today is St Patricks Day and you will once again be fighting for our freedom... Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution... but from annihilation. We are fighting for our right to live. To exist. And should we win the day, the St Patricks Day will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day the world declared in one voice: "We will not go quietly into the night!" We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on! We're going to survive! Today we celebrate our “We’re Still Alive” Day!

This is the cluster that infected the nursing home? And we still don’t know how it got to Washington state or the nursing home, right?

Yeah I don’t think Tim Cook or Zuckerberg called him up and said “hey bro, we’re pulling out of SXSW, do us a solid and cancel it.”    But I can imagine plenty of local businesses and BMD-types calling him up and telling him to fuck off for cancelling it.

Like i said, easy way out is to let the CDC/feds announce this (he could even pretend to fight it), and he shrugs his shoulders and says “sorry guys, not my call!  I told you I couldn’t even cancel it earlier this week!”

I expect we will see multiple positive cases here in Austin announced this weekend.   I thought they would sit on anything until the very last minutes, but now he has to justify it.

I’m sure this has already been talked about but there’s a scientist that found coating germ masks in a thin layer of salt actually kills viruses once it dries-based on the “spiky” crystalline structure of salt. Think we all know the issues with those germ masks-beneficial or not but thought this was interesting. I don’t know if it’d be possible to put salt water in a spray bottle and coat a mask. But if this thing really does escalate, thought I’d offer a life saving hack to my fellow nimrods.

So that cruise ship off of California where 21 out of 46 tested positive.   A person on the previous cruise (before the current crop of passengers) died of the virus, and supposedly a husband and wife in Toronto from the previous cruise have tested positive.

So if that thing is running 3,000+ people at a time, there could be another thousand or two infected just from that ship, not counting the current crop of passengers.   That seems like lawsuit city.

edit: it’s reddit, but somebody dug up articles and did some ,ath, not going to quote whole thing:

”Two people who died from COVID-19 in California were exposed on this cruise ship between February 11 and 21st on it's previous cruise to Mexico. That means this ship had an outbreak that started at least 2-3 weeks ago, and now there's a significant cluster of symptomatic crew members, who have likely also infected passengers.”

Flew AUS-IAH today. Was hoping for a plane half full. Nope. Not a hand sanitizer dispenser anywhere at IAH. And get this, in the bathroom 9 out of 10 soap dispensers didn’t work. What a shitshow. Also, almost nobody wears face mask.

And some of us prefer grown-ass women who know how to perform a little routine maintenance.  But you do you.  As a wise man once told me, if we all wanted to fuck the same woman, the world would be a pretty shitty place.

Can someone point me to the post where supposedly some ex-cdc person said this is going to be like the Spanish flu epidemic. ?

I don’t know if anyone has said it WAS going to be like that. There are tons of stories suggesting that it could be if its virulence continues on similar paths as it has historically and its death rate remains at current levels.

There was a really good episode on the NYT Daily podcast earlier this week laying all of this out. Worth a listen.

The US now has 327 cases, and 16 dead.  I know it’s early and we will probably be passing up Japan and Spain in the next day or two once they test more Americans on the ship, but it’s odd that Japan, Span, Germany, and France have more cases, but far fewer deaths.

Germany has 670 cases, no deaths for instance.  France, 613 cases, 9 deaths.  Maybe the Surly poster who mentioned Kirkland having the worse Wuhan strain than the rest of the US is right (and the first US case, the January 22nd case in that area, was from Wuhan)..
