I’ve offered thoughts and questions math, Houston, Austin, etc. I’m not a wet blanket and think that some of the shit that’s magnetizing some of you guys to this is comical or worthy of balance. Admonishing me to be nicer, post more like you, or leave is not going to have the intended effect. There are plenty of us reading this thread who have independent thoughts, so get over the selfishness, common in everything I’ve ever read from you, and deal with differing positions.

Between you and Brad whining, the original question I asked of Greenspoint still hasn’t been answered and it is entirely germane to the discussion. Guys that come on here referencing percentages without citing the reference or origin to the actual math creating the percentages are either p-hacking the topic to make a show of their view or hijacking the topic using bad math. It appears the irony is lost on both of you guys that that is explicitly and obviously what I tried to get clarity on while you each climbed over yourselves to defend the guy by telling me to get out of the way of whatever the facts are that you’d like to see, that also aren’t prevented by any single poster also posting.

Tl;dr. You’re an annoying bitch. On every board.

I am trying to understand why Ted Cruz would self-quarantine

Senator Ted Cruz will self-quarantine in his Texas home after a person he had a “brief conversation and a handshake” with at the recent CPAC conference tested positive for coronavirus.

“I’m not experiencing any symptoms, and I feel fine and healthy,” Cruz said in a statement, adding that authorities have advised him the odds of transmission given their brief interaction was “extremely low.” Those who’ve interacted with him in the last 10 days “should not be concerned about potential transmission,” medical authorities have advised him.

Meanwhile, shitloads of tourists in Italy and Egypt appear to be picking it up randomly.    Based on Surly not being able to stop touching their faces, the guy probably touched his face dozens of times in the hours before he shook Cruz’s hand.

She has had a lung surgery, is a former smoker and has COPD/asthma.

You should home-school your kid until R0 < 1.  And neither of them leave the house.  That could be in 3 weeks if testing gets us a giant denominator and a shitload of symptomatics turn out to be A1 or something else.  Or it could be through the end of the year.  Or next year.

Or move them to BFE Wyoming, get them an apartment, and hire someone to do their shopping.

I'm starting to think BFE America is the place to be if you can get there with enough physical plant and supplies for X period of time.

I’m gonna stay home and watch porn on the couch for a week or two.  Have groceries and alcohol delivered.  Seems like the safe play.

Everything except for the alcohol which depresses one's immunity. I have anecdotal experience that porn can strengthen one's immunity. If anyone else has similar anecdotal experience, let me know so we can publish a case-series in a peer-reviewed, PubMed-indexed journal.

I’m not doing the next few weeks sans alcohol.

This is an extremely ignorant take. India has been one of the nations that has actually been addressing coronavirus cases well from the get to go (initially only 3 cases and no deaths) and the recent increase has been after cases have risen in other nations like Iran and Italy. For its size, the current number of cases in India has been nothing short of remarkable (again with no deaths), considering India has been quick to bring its citizens in other afflicted countries back home as soon as possible. (Source: https://bnonews.com/index.php/2020/02/the-latest-coronavirus-cases/)

Some details on India's response:

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-51747932

India being a democracy (unlike China), a country that generally does not engage in large-scale animal production for human consumption (certainly not exotic animals), and having a government that is responding quickly (travel restrictions, setting up screening/surveillance in other nations) and at the moment, willing to ignore the economic impact in favor of public safety are some of the reasons it will weather the coronavirus pandemic better than most nations.

well that's great,if they avoid an outbreak, it may be ignorant to say they are going to have one given the positives you laid you...but that's not what i said.

i said i dread hearing of an outbreak...the conditions in those areas (and someone mentioned Brazil slums as well) will exacerbate the impact it if it does occur.

hopefully they avoid it.

Puerto Rico can't seem to catch a break from anything in the last what? 3? 4 years? Based on recent history, the current administration might not offer much support them in terms of preparedness and response.

All these companies, schools, other entities that wait until the first confirmed positive are already fucked at that point. Larry or Karen had been shaking hands, sneezing on tables, putting boogers under their desk, coughing on lunch counters, etc. for the past 7-10 days. You have one positive confirmed, about 20 that have yet to show symptoms, and the multiples that come off of them.

I work at a corporate training center. We normally run several thousand people from all over the world through each week. They decided Friday to shut the place down for 4 weeks. Fortunately, it won't affect me. I hope.

There's no way I'd travel overseas right now.

And not necessarily because I'd be scared of catching Covid-19, but because I'd be scared while there international air travel would be suspended, and I'd be trapped in a foreign country in crisis.

I think next week is gonna be insane.

That is correct in many cases.  There are some problems of a national or global scope, however, that are beyond the ability of individual states to handle.  These problems don’t respect state boundaries and a well-coordinated response in one state may be curtailed by the failings of the neighboring state.  I believe having a functional and competent centralized authority in that context is a good thing.

Instead, we have a federal governance that sought to curtail funding of the CDC and eliminated the office within the NSC that would have had the expertise and planning to allow for a more timely response to this coronavirus pandemic.  It is also undermining the message of our health and science experts and making the effort to combat this harder.

In that context, the states ignoring the central authority that has dropped the ball is our best case scenario.  The following link may offend political sensibilities, so click at your own risk.

Kudos to you for being even-handed.  As stated elsewhere, I am frequently suspicious of federal/national legislation but clearly see a need for federal leadership and coordination on an issue like this.  Other than Trump being Trump, it looks like the feds have mostly fucked this up without his assistance.

Does the flu kill 12-15 in a single assisted-care facility in a week or so?

No but sometimes God does.
actually I don’t know, maybe the flu can be that bad if it gets into those places.  If it did, would it be national news?

But, Trump being Trump is the reason this is fucked up.  "Best people", gotta get rid of the Deep State, "fake" media, on and on.

Every thing in the Federal government has been touched in one way or another with Trumpism the past 3 years, for better or (in nearly all cases) worse.

Oh, we may have competent people here and there, but they are muzzled, or terminated, or whatnot.  Which leads to other competent people staying quiet out of fear of losing their jobs, or being demoted/transferred elsewhere, etc.

Trump's fear of someone competent showing him up on any given day has paralyzed the federal government.

I mean it's not like we're just a couple of weeks in now, with a tiny sample size.

I'm not saying the numbers presented are set in stone,  but I do think they show this is obviously much more lethal than the seasonal flu.

It's useful to show because there are some who still believe this really isn't anything worse than the flu.

I believe that is a dangerous stance to take.

I posted these on the retarded CR thread. Just want people to know that there are protocols that are evolving and being sent through healthcare systems. Mitigation is already underway. From last week.

Oh yeah he has definitely glazed everything with a nice patina of shit.  I'm not anxious to absolve him of any of this.

But that article goes a long way to dispelling a lot of the current talking points.  I'm glad I won't be repeating any of them.

It's all about the tests.  The only people practicing social distancing are the well off and the IT industry who mostly works remote half the time anyway.

Get that numerator as high as possible as fast as possible.  Yes it will create tens of thousands of positives.  But if you want everyone's attention on the key issues (asymptomatics, social distancing to 80%) and what that gets us on the stretch graph the only way is the numerator.

I want to see dozens of big city and state health departments confirming this tidal wave of tests we've been promised for this week.

I will also say, a week ago tonight, talking to Geddy, we both agreed this LAST WEEK was going to be "THE WEEK" shit went insane.

Yes, a lot of bad stuff happened.  Lombardy is fucked.  That one is the big worry.  But under the definition of "insane" i would have expected a thousand dead a day in Lombardy.
