About 5 years or so ago, I tried to get my office to move into the 21st century and move most of our processes online. Yeah, my main goal was to try to work from home but my point was valid, our shit is incredibly outdated. Nobody wanted to hear it, everything was fine, it would be a disaster to change anything. Now they're scrambling to figure out how to get shit done remotely. We had the $$$ to implement this plan and nobody could be bothered to do anything. They always seem to figure this shit out after it's too late.

I'm waiting for some one to pose the idea that parents drop off their children at the park where each child is tethered to a peg with a six foot radius given how little compassion for working parents there has been.

Little store is open, but they have a cap on number inside.  Basin restaurant is basically take out only plusbthe 4 outside tables. We've eaten 100% of our food from our own stores. I saw only 1 other truck in the state park yesterday. Today may be a little busier - grapevine hills and walking tornillo creek. 

Man, they tightened up quickly. We left Monday afternoon and everything seemed like business as usual.

Similar-ish. Turns out not only is this rotational staffing plan for COVID-19, it’s also a test program for working remote 3 days a week. 

Some good may come of this.

A novel human coronavirus that is now named severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (formerly called HCoV-19) emerged in Wuhan, China, in late 2019 and is now causing a pandemic.1 We analyzed the aerosol and surface stability of SARS-CoV-2 and compared it with SARS-CoV-1, the most closely related human coronavirus.2

We evaluated the stability of SARS-CoV-2 and SARS-CoV-1 in aerosols and on various surfaces and estimated their decay rates using a Bayesian regression model (see the Methods section in the Supplementary Appendix, available with the full text of this letter at NEJM.org). SARS-CoV-2 nCoV-WA1-2020 (MN985325.1) and SARS-CoV-1 Tor2 (AY274119.3) were the strains used. Aerosols (<5 μm) containing SARS-CoV-2 (105.25 50% tissue-culture infectious dose [TCID50] per milliliter) or SARS-CoV-1 (106.75-7.00 TCID50 per milliliter) were generated with the use of a three-jet Collison nebulizer and fed into a Goldberg drum to create an aerosolized environment. The inoculum resulted in cycle-threshold values between 20 and 22, similar to those observed in samples obtained from the upper and lower respiratory tract in humans.

Our data consisted of 10 experimental conditions involving two viruses (SARS-CoV-2 and SARS-CoV-1) in five environmental conditions (aerosols, plastic, stainless steel, copper, and cardboard). All experimental measurements are reported as means across three replicates.

SARS-CoV-2 remained viable in aerosols throughout the duration of our experiment (3 hours), with a reduction in infectious titer from 103.5 to 102.7 TCID50 per liter of air. This reduction was similar to that observed with SARS-CoV-1, from 104.3 to 103.5 TCID50 per milliliter (Figure 1A).

SARS-CoV-2 was more stable on plastic and stainless steel than on copper and cardboard, and viable virus was detected up to 72 hours after application to these surfaces (Figure 1A), although the virus titer was greatly reduced (from 103.7 to 100.6 TCID50 per milliliter of medium after 72 hours on plastic and from 103.7 to 100.6 TCID50 per milliliter after 48 hours on stainless steel). The stability kinetics of SARS-CoV-1 were similar (from 103.4 to 100.7 TCID50 per milliliter after 72 hours on plastic and from 103.6 to 100.6 TCID50 per milliliter after 48 hours on stainless steel). On copper, no viable SARS-CoV-2 was measured after 4 hours and no viable SARS-CoV-1 was measured after 8 hours. On cardboard, no viable SARS-CoV-2 was measured after 24 hours and no viable SARS-CoV-1 was measured after 8 hours (Figure 1A).

Both viruses had an exponential decay in virus titer across all experimental conditions, as indicated by a linear decrease in the log10TCID50 per liter of air or milliliter of medium over time (Figure 1B). The half-lives of SARS-CoV-2 and SARS-CoV-1 were similar in aerosols, with median estimates of approximately 1.1 to 1.2 hours and 95% credible intervals of 0.64 to 2.64 for SARS-CoV-2 and 0.78 to 2.43 for SARS-CoV-1 (Figure 1C, and Table S1 in the Supplementary Appendix). The half-lives of the two viruses were also similar on copper. On cardboard, the half-life of SARS-CoV-2 was longer than that of SARS-CoV-1. The longest viability of both viruses was on stainless steel and plastic; the estimated median half-life of SARS-CoV-2 was approximately 5.6 hours on stainless steel and 6.8 hours on plastic (Figure 1C). Estimated differences in the half-lives of the two viruses were small except for those on cardboard (Figure 1C). Individual replicate data were noticeably “noisier” (i.e., there was more variation in the experiment, resulting in a larger standard error) for cardboard than for other surfaces (Fig. S1 through S5), so we advise caution in interpreting this result.

We found that the stability of SARS-CoV-2 was similar to that of SARS-CoV-1 under the experimental circumstances tested. This indicates that differences in the epidemiologic characteristics of these viruses probably arise from other factors, including high viral loads in the upper respiratory tract and the potential for persons infected with SARS-CoV-2 to shed and transmit the virus while asymptomatic.3,4 Our results indicate that aerosol and fomite transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is plausible, since the virus can remain viable and infectious in aerosols for hours and on surfaces up to days (depending on the inoculum shed). These findings echo those with SARS-CoV-1, in which these forms of transmission were associated with nosocomial spread and super-spreading events,5 and they provide information for pandemic mitigation efforts.

For those asking the day care question, we pulled our son out as of yesterday (his last day prior to that was last Friday). But it was a very tough decision, and our family situation is very, very conducive to making it work. Do what works for your family. Our day care admin said that more than half of families are still enrolled. 

Day care should be reserved for children of front lines medical personnel and those with no other options.

This is 100% correct and something I've been espousing since the early days of this pandemic. The Chinese probably knew this was an issue by mid November or so.  Fuck them.  They need to feel the pain the rest of the world will feel from this. We need to re-patriot as much of our manufacturing as we possibly can and what can't be brought back to the US should go to Mexico, Central and South America.  Fuck China!

We also need to re-evaluate population density. The problems way out pace any potential benefits. Use our resources and innovation to use one of our biggest resources. Land. 
 

Stop trying to find solutions to cram every individual into the same shoebox and use those resources to better connect communities. A dollar spent to solve transportation issues benefits exponentially more individuals than that same dollar spent on forced housing in overcrowded cities. 
 

Space is a strength. Maximize resources. Fuck density.

Around that same time we had a third party evaluate our disaster recovery procedures and they found them severely lacking. Based on their recommendations we instituted a major upgrade and now everyone that can is working from home.   IT and management who supported them deserve a lot of credit.

Do you work for the public sector? Because that describes exactly what is happening in my environment now. I am a senior IT support employee and I JUST got a laptop so I can help people from home.

SARS-CoV-2 remained viable in aerosols throughout the duration of our experiment (3 hours), with a reduction in infectious titer from 103.5 to 102.7 TCID50 per liter of air. This reduction was similar to that observed with SARS-CoV-1, from 104.3 to 103.5 TCID50 per milliliter (Figure 1A).

SARS-CoV-2 was more stable on plastic and stainless steel than on copper and cardboard, and viable virus was detected up to 72 hours after application to these surfaces (Figure 1A), although the virus titer was greatly reduced (from 103.7 to 100.6 TCID50 per milliliter of medium after 72 hours on plastic and from 103.7 to 100.6 TCID50 per milliliter after 48 hours on stainless steel). The stability kinetics of SARS-CoV-1 were similar (from 103.4 to 100.7 TCID50 per milliliter after 72 hours on plastic and from 103.6 to 100.6 TCID50 per milliliter after 48 hours on stainless steel). On copper, no viable SARS-CoV-2 was measured after 4 hours and no viable SARS-CoV-1 was measured after 8 hours. On cardboard, no viable SARS-CoV-2 was measured after 24 hours and no viable SARS-CoV-1 was measured after 8 hours (Figure 1A).

Both viruses had an exponential decay in virus titer across all experimental conditions, as indicated by a linear decrease in the log10TCID50 per liter of air or milliliter of medium over time (Figure 1B). The half-lives of SARS-CoV-2 and SARS-CoV-1 were similar in aerosols, with median estimates of approximately 1.1 to 1.2 hours and 95% credible intervals of 0.64 to 2.64 for SARS-CoV-2 and 0.78 to 2.43 for SARS-CoV-1 (Figure 1C, and Table S1 in the Supplementary Appendix). The half-lives of the two viruses were also similar on copper. On cardboard, the half-life of SARS-CoV-2 was longer than that of SARS-CoV-1. The longest viability of both viruses was on stainless steel and plastic; the estimated median half-life of SARS-CoV-2 was approximately 5.6 hours on stainless steel and 6.8 hours on plastic (Figure 1C). Estimated differences in the half-lives of the two viruses were small except for those on cardboard (Figure 1C). Individual replicate data were noticeably “noisier” (i.e., there was more variation in the experiment, resulting in a larger standard error) for cardboard than for other surfaces (Fig. S1 through S5), so we advise caution in interpreting this result.

We found that the stability of SARS-CoV-2 was similar to that of SARS-CoV-1 under the experimental circumstances tested. This indicates that differences in the epidemiologic characteristics of these viruses probably arise from other factors, including high viral loads in the upper respiratory tract and the potential for persons infected with SARS-CoV-2 to shed and transmit the virus while asymptomatic.3,4 Our results indicate that aerosol and fomite transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is plausible, since the virus can remain viable and infectious in aerosols for hours and on surfaces up to days (depending on the inoculum shed). These findings echo those with SARS-CoV-1, in which these forms of transmission were associated with nosocomial spread and super-spreading events,5 and they provide information for pandemic mitigation efforts.

thanks to the responses to my mini meltdown last night. i realize our situation is just one of billions at this point, and it could be so much worse...we have used the grill, and we are 'camping' on our patio w/ the fridge and microwave...just the thought of being shut in/shut off for months without having a fully functioning house got to me a bit yesterday.

You are probably going to be able to better stay on top of state of evidence via independent research.  Just FYI, MD Peter Attia (via his instagram) had a 6 or 7 minute clip posted Tues night regarding their current  thinking.  Seems it is very patient specific but to the extent you are able to able to regulate BP at an equal level via an alternative mechanism it might be worth trying in the interim but still not enough data for anyone to know if really beneficial.

A medical device manufacturer has threatened to sue a group of volunteers in Italy that 3D printed a valve used for life-saving coronavirus treatments. The valve typically costs about $11,000 from the medical device manufacturer, but the volunteers were able to print replicas for about $1 (via Techdirt).

A hospital in Italy was in need of the valves after running out while treating patients for COVID-19. The hospital’s usual supplier said they could not make the valves in time to treat the patients, according to Metro. That launched a search for a way to 3D print a replica part, and Cristian Fracassi and Alessandro Ramaioli, who work at Italian startup Isinnova, offered their company’s printer for the job, reports Business Insider.

However, when the pair asked the manufacturer of the valves for blueprints they could use to print replicas, the company declined and threatened to sue for patent infringement, according to Business Insider Italia. Fracassi and Ramaioli moved ahead anyway by measuring the valves and 3D printing three different versions of them.

 
The new coronavirus is spreading through the US, and several states have made emergency declarations. The World Health Organization has declared it a pandemic. Here are the basics:

So far, the valves they made have worked on 10 patients as of March 14th, according to Massimo Temporelli, the founder of Italian manufacturing solutions company FabLab who helped recruit Fracassi and Ramaioli to print the replica valves.

“[The patients] were people in danger of life, and we acted. Period,” said Fracassi in a Facebook post. He also said that “we have no intention of profit on this situation, we are not going to use the designs or product beyond the strict need for us forced to act, we are not going to spread the drawing.”

Italy has more than 31,500 confirmed infections of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, and more than 2,500 confirmed deaths. Both figures trail only China.

My change of thinking is based on re-evaluation of the time frames that we are looking at. My earlier assessment was based on a 7-10 day exposure time frame.  We have (hopefully) flattened that, which means the exposure window is significantly increased. I think that we are socially isolated for many weeks at this point, and exposures could occur downstream.  Might make a difference.  Makes sense by my reasoning to consider tapering off the ACEI or ARBs and monitor BP levels.  If you are diabetic, or have kidney disease, or have other complicating factors the risk dynamic is different.  But for myself, I just have essential hypertension and some mildly elevated LFTs. Over the next couple of weeks, I am not particularly worried about either. 

This appears to be a reasonable assessment. The short term variation in blood pressure from switching agents may have short term benefits that outweigh long term risks. I wonder how long it would take the body to down regulate ACE 2 receptors however?  This can probably be done over the phone or with a virtual visit with your doctor.  Looks like many people are going with amlodipine instead of their ACE or ARB which aside from some ankle edema, appears to be a cheap and effective alternative.

I feel for you.  Your situation, and those with kids that are currently stuck in other countries, or folks with kids that are seniors that are looking at missing out on prom/graduation/sports-- those are all tough situations.  They're not life of death but they're human stories and they're meaningful stories.

It's going to take ALL of us, knowing we're in it together, to get through it okay.  And the scars aren't only going to be physical.

But you're going to manage.  It might even be fun to pretend you're homeless or something, challenge yourself to get by with as few comforts as possible. ;)

Yep, I know it wasn't that simple. It's been a move occurring over the years to lots of offshore locations. Free enterprise, cheaper costs are the driver. The BLATANT  intellectual theft is the thing that really pisses me off.

Can somebody explain how a virus infection works generally? Like, let’s say that somebody how is contagious coughs on you and passes the virus to you. That’s day zero. Then what, the virus starts multiplying inside of you? How many days until you become contagious yourself? Does becoming contagious coincide with feeling symptoms, or are those two separate things? What happens when you recover? Is your body killing the virus? Do you have no virus left alive in your body after you recovered, or you still have it but are immune to it?

With this virus you can be contagious before showing symptoms of the illness from the reading I've done, and comments seen posted here.

I've visited our ODM's factories.  Massive assembly lines side-by-side, where they produce Lenovo, HP, Dell, Apple, and their own-branded products.  IP wanders across those lines on a daily basis, and they DGAF.  

But, Americans like our $200 laptops and bigscreen TVs, so it will continue.

Yes, I work for a state agency (not texas). We're so far behind, tech-wise, that it's embarrassing. I have to use Lotus notes for one of my jobs. We just got rid of a DOS option for another. There's a terminal in here that's running Windows 3.1 because the program won't work on newer versions.

What I understood from reading above on this same page is that when they do trials of a new vaccine on humans, they want to monitor them for 14 months to make sure the vaccine doesn’t give them the disease. So between that and actually ramping up production to inoculate the whole world, at least 18 months. My guess is that they’re gonna have to cut down the 14-month observation period.

Wow! And I thought I had it rough supporting Foxpro on a win95 machine. Our customer facing tech is the latest available, but everything the Luddite execs can't see or understand is easily 20 years out of date.
