We don’t have the same cultural capability. It’s called freedom. Singapore has given up 100% of their lives to being surveilled openly by their government. And they’re good at it. That was never happening here, nor was people voluntarily giving up their personal freedoms until being ordered to do so, and we suck at it even then.

Which part?

  1. That has nothing to do with testing efficacy
  2. Damned near every man women and child in american voluntarily carries around the most sophisticated spy device invented by man.   Yes our government uses this data.
  3. Have we not given up freedoms in the time of crisis / natural disaster?   I know I can't go to the beach now, I know friends who had to close their businesses.
  4. I disagree that Americans faced with daunting challenges can't rise and overcome them like no other country on this planet. (this is obviously just opinion)

That’s a romantic notion. We can’t even stay at home and do nothing  effectively. We don’t believe the news or scientists, depending on how you view life. People may cary around phones, and the government uses that data, but there is a veneer of deniability in that happening here. The government can’t show up saying “look what we did” and have it accepted. Nor would 100% if the populace willingly comply if asked. Come on man.

Why China's number are barely climbing.  This thing never got out of Hubei and into Beijing or Shanghai or anywhere else?
And
How Germany only as 172 deaths (as of now).   France has 2/3 the cases and 5 times the deaths

Read on another board that while Italy counts anyone who had covid and died as a covid death, Germany isn't.

I did nazi that coming.

Press conference at 2PM CDT in Minnesota. Governor Walz's office expected to produce a shelter-in-place order.

287 confirmed cases here on 6365 tests ran, but everyone thinks the true number is at least 10 times that. Mayo doing their part by clearing 3000 tests per day.

It going to be optional activities for a long time. As soon as it’s required or grades are taken then we have to fulfill special education requirements. We have no capability to do that at this time. We are basically providing resources for kids as well as ways for them to connect with their teachers and each other.

fyi, you can share with your ecosystem....  was on a webinar this morning including the Zoom CIO and the education shift to online is working for all of the top 100 universities (with a couple of exceptions not named) and most of the technical-oriented schools at all levels.  the biggest challenge has been the teachers.  student adoption across all socioeconomic lines and situations has been better than expected.

Why the ever living fuck are there still people on cruise ships? This has been a thing for at least a month, and I don't know of many cruises that last that long. I get airports and planes still having required travel, but fucking cruises are the definition of leisure and unnecessary.

US death rate percentage is slowly climbing.  Other countries are getting higher.  France, UK, Netherlands, Spain and obviously Italy are all over 5%.  Iran is as well but who actually knows what's going on there and how accurate the information is.  China and Russia seem to be playing the same game on nothing to see here.

Louisiana's diagnosed cases of the new coronavirus climbed by another 407 to a total of 1,795 on Wednesday as test results continued to pour in by the thousands.

The overall increase marked the largest single-day increase of new cases, along with 19 new deaths associated with the virus, according to information released by the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals.

The surge in cases was not unexpected, as new testing capacity is brought online to help confirm cases among residents.

But Wednesday's numbers suggest that the number of cases outside of the New Orleans area, which has been the epicenter of the outbreak so far, are rising rapidly.

There are now 65 coronavirus-related deaths reported. There have now cases identified in 48 of Louisiana's 64 parishes and 19 parishes have seen at least one death.

Our biggest challenge is that experience levels and expectations are all over the place. Some parents want daily organized lessons with a ton of activities. Others want something minimal because parents are working from home and can’t help their younger kids. Obviously the number devices and internet connection is something else to consider. If we roll one thing out to appease one group, the other starts freaking out. I’ve collected info from about 200 families and there is a distinct divide about what they want/can’t handle.

In addition, some of our teachers could teach via zoom for 8 hours a day starting tomorrow. One can’t get into the meeting we are having right now...

Its cool. Warm weather and such. Serious, so when do numbers start going up due to Spring Break? And Easter week is right around the corner. In Latin America almost everyone travels.

Mexico City and it’s high altitude/low o2 levels can’t help. That has to be one of the largest population centers to be that high up.

One of those - the Fabuloso or whatever - does a 7-day cruise through the Caribbean islands.  It was denied entry in Tortola on Feb 26 due to the virus and then on March 14 it landed in Martinique and had two passengers test positive.  Yet it's run at least one more voyage since that one.

Usually we'd have march madness on in all the lounges this time of the year.  Instead we have the news.  The only funny thing is all the skype reporting from inside reporters homes.  The backdrop in the home office is always so perfect.  Show us some real shots with holes in the walls etc.  The lotion right next to the laptop...with the odd one off sock.  Give us something.  You fuckers aren't perfect.

Dallas (DPD release):

There has been some misinformation about the Dallas Police Department’s approach to the shelter-in-place ordinance. Please see the statement below for clarity.

Dallas Police officers were previously provided a summary of the shelter in place order for Dallas County. The City has now adopted similar regulations. Essentially, the regulations require all individuals anywhere in the City of Dallas to shelter in place – that is, stay at home – except for certain essential activities.

DPD’s first line of defense is an educational approach. Officers will inform residents of the shelter in place regulations and the reasons for their implementation. Next, officers will ask them to disperse as a means of voluntary compliance. Given the seriousness of this COVID-19 pandemic, violators are expected to leave the area peacefully.

Officers will not stop residents, asking for ID or documentation supporting their need to be out of their residence, without other legitimate reasons for the stop. At this time, DPD will focus on educating the public.

NY at this time is probably the best sample size for US as they don't have the Washington outlier and have tested a lot more.  they are .9, having climbed a bit,  but IMO they have at least 5x-10x(and maybe many more)more cases out there that haven't been tested.

I think we are seeing constraints on the testing capabilities of these countries as the swell begins to hit hospitals. We are contracting our testing back to the sick, high risk and hospitalized.  We simply are not at the point to do good epidemiologic testing and apply comorbidities and CFR to the general population as % of risk. We are seeing the bad tip of the iceberg starting to show up at the hospitals as they get really sick days 5-10 into the onset of the illness.

In other words, the untested asymptomatic or mild cases are likely climbing exponentially but we don't know it.  Our tested denominator is getting sicker.

At least I hope this is the case.

I will say I am tired of the guy who "handled" the Ebola crisis of 2014 opining on the handling of CV19. Ebola infected <10 Americans and supply chain disruption was with Africa which has next to no impact on US economy. Cannot even compare the two,

And it’s really difficult for an Ebola patient to infect others, short of actually bleeding or coughing blood into them and it puts people down so quickly it doesn’t spread very rapidly, allowing for full tracking.

Guy on TigerDroppings has it.  His oxygen level is down to 90 and he's still at home.  He's 44, a former heavy smoker and has COPD.  What is he thinking?  His doctor has already told him to get to the hospital.

Yeah, 90 is low.  He needs to be on supplemental oxygen ASAP

It was localized and the entire world responded. This is not the case this time.

That is funny - I noticed the same.

As kids enter the world of "online high school" in April - there is an urgency afoot in some to create that perfect "set" for their presence at virtual high school. High school "social order" is being overturned with the pandemic.
