I caught a charter flight back to the US yesterday. Now trying to make my way to Austin. What a shitshow that was. The Buenos Aires airport was essentially closed except for our flight. The whole ticketing process was manual. The boarding passes were pieces of paper with your name, seat number, etc written on them. The social distancing was pretty orderly until the dipshit gate agents totally fumbled the boarding and people ended up crowding each other for a while. Also, 1995 called. They want their shitty plane with TVs hanging from the ceiling back.

And as said above, and as much as it pains me to agree with anyone on the hell hole that is texags, we are half assing this lockdown. It worked (presumptively) in China because people were afraid to leave their residences for anything... or were more likely, locked in. Here, most of the population is dumb/ignorant and ignore most of the warnings/orders out in place because their way of life is more important that some silly virus. While any amount of people staying home or avoiding interactions will help slow the spread, to truly “flatten the curve”, it takes full buy-in from the nation... or enforcement of temporary orders in the event that people don’t buy in. You can’t have people half-assing it if you’re taking the risk of tanking the economy to halt it. It’s whole-ass or nothing.  And our idiot population is not taking it seriously enough to whole-ass it

I am not joking when I say I want to get Corona. I'll be fine, and being "Recovered" is the golden passport to freedom. I may already have had it but who the hell knows.

I would add that full lockdown is completely awkward. It's just socially very difficult to do. You can understand the logic of all this and there is still a kind of mental shock when you can't order Domino's. Obviously, many people are not exposing themselves to people who are at risk, so that further lengthens to chain of events between normal behavior and illness. And of course very few have seen anyone actually get ill, it's just all in the news. And most people are conditioned to ignore the constant shrieking and hysteria from our media.

I don't dispute the need for isolation. In fact, obviously, if what you are saying is true, I would expect an Italy situation in a few weeks over there. If stores like Home Depot are open, you aren't on quarantine. So if true, conventional wisdom here predicts bad things to happen. Very bad things. We've had no restaurants, no bars, no going to work for more than two weeks, and numbers continue to rise. Supermarkets only.

Even so, imagine that the solution ends up being that everyone has to wear a mask when they go out. Do you think that's awkward? I do. It's weird. But it may be necessary for six months or a year.

During the first WWI Christmas, they had a truce. Soldiers from both sides crossed into No Man's Land and had dinner and drinks with each other and to exchange gifts. They literally had no idea what was about to happen. They couldn't conceive of it. They were not mentally prepared. There were no Aggies there.

I don't object to the criticism at all, people are behaving stupidly, but I also think almost nobody is mentally prepared for this. Isolation is a huge stressor, as is losing your job, as is losing your entire routine, literally almost every resource that keeps you alive. It's a huge personal and psychological challenge even for those who were on this early, or who are financially secure, like many of us here. To dismiss people as just being "aggy" is kind of ridiculous.

Maybe someone has already thought this, but when I couldn’t sleep last night .... (happens a lot nowadays) .... I started to wonder what we’re going to call this whole thing.

The last one is called ‘The Great Recession’, or the 08/09 financial crisis, or the mortgage crisis.

What are we going to call this. Is this going to change the name of the last one?

Kind of like how World War 2 turned ‘The Great War’ into WW1.

Just some meandering sleep deprived thoughts.

Maybe Great Recession 2, Electric Bugaloo

Rhode Island ACLU executive director Steven Brown said in a statement. “Under the Fourth Amendment, having a New York state license plate simply does not, and cannot, constitute ‘probable cause’ to allow police to stop a car and interrogate the driver, no matter how laudable the goal of the stop may be.”

I don't know. It seems to me that having a New York license plate would be ample probable cause to determine if the driver is from New York. And however noble the ACLU's executive director thinks he is, his actions could cause people to die. In other words, as long as the actions are solely used to determine residency and not to look for weed or guns or some other crime, I have no problem with them.

The more I think about it the more it is eerily apparent the freedoms of the united states aren't a strength when dealing with a once in a century pandemic such as this.

Weird that they casually mention he was discovered dead in the hotel room he was self-quarantined in. Hadn’t heard the virus could take you out that quickly.

Probably not quite as it seems. Most people probably think they have a little breathing difficulty when in fact they have a lot of breathing difficulty. So it doesn't take much to tip the balance at that point.

Not sure what it says about me but I agree with about half the comments there.

The quarantines feel like a joke if we allow 80% of businesses to continue operating as an essential business. I live in FW which has been “stay at home” since Tuesday and my neighborhood golf course had tons of golfers out today. Seriously, golf is acceptable right now but as an ophthalmologist I can’t see my patients. Went to Central Market to get groceries and it was packed with people. No one even cared about maintaining any kind of radius.

Really frustrating to have these half measures in place because they seem mostly ineffective. Either lock it all down or admit defeat and let the virus do what it’s gonna do.

This is where I am. Pool construction is okay, but treating patients is a no go? Not only does it seem relatively pointless, it will cause me to be out of work much, much longer than it should have.

Yeah. I was looking at tee times for my typical weekend golf course this Sunday. They aren’t packed, but they will still be really busy this weekend.

Rudy Gobert, Donovan Mitchell and rest of Utah Jazz cleared of coronavirus

So Donovan Mitchell never had any symptoms, correct? Have to wonder how many of those cases are out there.

He’s a fucking pilot. Also, it is You’re and misinformed is one word. Miss Informed is probably a character in a teacher/student porn. And we won’t start on your run on sentence. So maybe stop lecturing other folks when you obviously can’t remember context or their professions.

I think mid April most shelter in places are lifted and by May 1 we’re mostly back in business. Obviously by mid April we’ll have a much better idea where we are as a country.

But ya that thread is pretty accurate to what’s going on.

NC just announced theirs yesterday and it runs thru 4/29.  As late to the party states rolls theirs out it is easily getting pushed to mid May or later.

Or if you think it's should go where most needed instead of who can pay the most

Double-edged sword. Who is to say it’s not going where it is most needed.  According to many experts Texas is hours or days from their own exponential exposure. We are on the border with Louisiana that is a known hot spot and haven’t closed that border or forced any fleeing to self quarantine for 14 days. We have a responsibility to NOT become so out of control like NY.

If Texas does ramp up in a major way, then it would simply be said they “weren’t prepared” if they weren’t purchasing.  They are doing right by the 60million they serve. They will spend any dollar they can to protect their citizens. (Not to mention the narrative NYC is all of a sudden “poor”....no comment)

They’re so damned caught up on only trying to push the lower than initially advertised, and only for old people death rate narrative. I honestly can’t understand why they’re  on such an unwavering crusade, other than that it’s the current company line they’re being fed over at texags. It’s quite annoying.

TexAgs has quite the reputation for deleting threads that don’t match whatever narrative Luigi and Co. are currently pushing.   Don’t know if they are deleting covid threads,  but many do seem quite adverse to taking this seriously.

On the one hand, there are plenty of olds in their neck of the woods.   And Montgomery County went into lockdown and is swinging above their weight class in covid cases, so it’s not like there aren’t nearby examples.

And while we make jokes about them, aggy as an instruction has been taking this seriously.   Shit, they had quite a scare early on - it looked like they were going to be the first cases in Texas.   And their vet school probably knows a thing or two about infectious diseases.

My guess is that they are going to need some deaths before it gets through their thick skulls.   Because they are aggy.

I saw one article talking to some docs at a hospital, that some  can go from not showing outward symptoms to full-tilt crisis mode within an hour or two.
