i know this started out as a mockery of the alarmists on the board.

i'm curious if it's getting a little more surreal posting these updates?

Naah....it's the kung flu, it's a big hoax, it's not really harmful, and NY was bad.  There, think we've about covered it.

What I find interesting is that ultimately what most of us support here is extremely human and extraordinarily arrogant when you get right down to it.   Any other animal species on this planet when confronted with something like this would do jack shit to try and stop it.  In fact in terms of the survival and future flourishing of the species that actually might be the exact right thing to do.  You have something that is killing off in larger numbers the older animals (proverbial slowest Buffalos) that require greater resources, greater care, may make a community more vulnerable to predators etc.  It's also taking out a few younger members of the species who for one reason or the other may not be "genetically up to snuff" preventing them from continuing to spread that poor genetic material down the line.  The very very natural thing to do would be to let this thing have at it, survive and come out leaner and meaner on the other side.

Now here we are, evolved to the point that we have the gall to say "fuck that, I actually care about these people Mother Nature...you're not just going to wipe them away and here is what I am going to do about it."  In general as far as we know we are the only animals (and make no mistake about it that is what we are) who would deign to confront this thing in that manner.  It's a uniquely human construct.  We've risen above just being animals who subscribe to the whims of nature.  Is that approach what is really natural? No.  Is it even what is in the long term best interests of our species? Hard to say,. There are lots of things you could uncomfortably argue where this has downline benefits from a "species" standpoint.

We are just arrogant enough as humans to believe we can outsmart this thing and if we can just get a few more people to stop being big dumb animals and find a little humanity, maybe...just maybe our arrogance will pay off.

Don't be a dumb animal....wear a mask.

I just spoke to a friend that runs one of the largest labs in Central Texas.  She said that are pulling their hair out trying to keep up with the COVID testing right now and she said her best advice for me right now was to "STAY at HOME!" .  Take this for what it's worth.

I missed the meeting where we decided, particularly here in the Southern States where we pride ourselves (and rightfully so) on being a bit more considerate to our neighbors, that the mask thing was about ADA and not just being a kind and polite fellow citizen to the person next to you whom is also out and about in public.

If we're gonna bring the ADA into this, let's just be honest and call it like it is.  Most of the people not wearing masks right now qualify for ADA protection because they are mentally retarded.  My 24 chromosome sister wears a mask the one or two times a week she goes out into public for the very simple reason---she cares about other people, even strangers.  She is protected by the ADA but chooses to be a nice person.  What the fuck is y'all's excuse?  I don't blame you from hiding behind the ADA you obese, backwards-ass, glops of human shit.

How are the tourists acting up your way? Just went and got lunch in Fraser at an outdoor restaurant but you have to wait in line to order. If what i just witnessed is how the rest of the summer is going to go, we're proper fucked. Big table of Texans, not a mask between them. Young locals starting to eschew mask wearing as well. Probably less than 40 percent compliance on the whole.

Things were looking good up until now. Now I'm really concerned.

SurlyBevo is right.  They mutate and often to a weaker version.  Also - All coronaviruses we know of tend to do worse in the summer.  Weakens their outer shell if I remember correctly but that’s off top of my head.

Go one step further.

why do they mutate to the weaker strain.....?

What do y'all think of this chart? I saw it initially on the Karl Denninger blog and I decided to make my own with more years, and I adjusted the deaths each year according to population growth. It shows the number of weekly deaths. I want you to focus on the red curve, where it dips below the others. Why do you think that is happening? In case you are thinking "fewer vehicle accident deaths", the average weekly number of deaths in vehicle accidents is around 730. As of the last reported week on this chart, which ended on 6/6, we were at around 15,000 fewer weekly deaths than previous years, so even if all 730 vehicle accidents went away (they didn't), that would only account for 5% of the drop in deaths.

Dear god guys, it just incomplete data for recent weeks. That information takes a long time to get to processed by the states and then sent to NCHS. You're comparing complete data from previous years to do partial data from this year.  You didn't really think we magically dipped below 40K deaths a week, did you?

So, I just wanted to come back to this since that data has been updated. The below should illustrate why the "drop" shown in the chart was an issue of incomplete data and not a real "drop" below typical number of weekly deaths.

Me too. I've always been on the 72 hours from total societal collapse wagon. I am pretty amazed that we have held up this long. Basically boils down to power grid, water supply to urban areas, or gasoline. COVID gonna have to hit one of those to really have a chance for tipping over the edge.

so basically any Kevin Costner movie plot

Our valley ain’t fucking around. Masks everywhere and you can’t walk into an establishment without one. I’m in Ruidoso right now...it’s full of West Texans, maybe 40% mask usage? That’s actually higher than I was expecting, but not high enough to spare this town...just a matter of time before every community gets hit.

Grand County has been really good up until now, but today was rough. Starting to think CO should be banning folks from high case states like NY did.

Hopefully what i saw today was an outlier, but I'll know more after a couple more days.

When we visited CO everyone one of us wore a mask 100% of the time in doors and near buildings unless we were really alone, ages 10, 12, 15, 45 and 49. We went out of our way to show them we had been isolated before traveling and we were going to wear masks. I hate it when tourists aren’t respectful. I’m hoping we can get back in August but not looking good.

went to NM last week.  First rattle out of the box, in Santa Rosa on I-40, the Pilot travel center had signs on the door requiring masks.  My wife and I complied.   We go in and at least 1 out of 5 folks have no mask.   Whatever.

We get to Ruidoso and see exactly what you described. As much shit as I talk, we do actually wear ours in the public places.  It was weird as hell seeing older folks not wearing masks.  "Dude and Dudette...if anyone needs the masks, it's you."

I did get a kick out of the roadblocks on the road going to Inn of the Mountain Gods.   I went to the little casino on the main road and masks were required.   No smoking allowed.  That was cool with me...but no table games.  Stayed about 10min and split.

I don't get too caught up in what other folks are doing.  I'm gonna do the right thing by us and not tempt fate.  If we're wrong and overdoing it, it's still our choice.

We are still looking good for now, but not if this no mask in the mountains shit continues. The mountains is where our early outbreaks started, so we are extra sensitive to that.

The way things are here, each county has a waiver and is allowed to open certain things like outdoor dining (and limited indoor dining) and gyms. If a county exceeds a pre-determined threshold for cases, then things get rolled back.

So i can't tell you if we will be open in August or not. But if you come, please wear your masks in public places.

Can you please explain this like you would to an 8 year old? From the little I read it kinda sounded like natural selection, but it wasn’t clear. Do the antibodies in the human body kinda chip away at it?

The most successful virus strains will keep the host alive to spread the disease.

Not kill, kill, kill.

”success” in biology isn’t always quantified by “most”.
