Hospitalizations for what though?  If a person with underlying issues isn't feeling well to begin with and gets a "positive" test and goes to the hospital (logical)... the numbers still are messed up.  In times of a pandemic I would assume hospital rates are higher. I know if I start feeling bad from anything I'll be more likely to not wait before seeking treatment.

People aren’t going to the hospital when they have the sniffles. They are going when they start to have difficulty breathing as there is obviously more to it than a cold. I would think that it’s reasonable to count someone with Covid symptoms (especially the difficulty breathing one) that need hospitalization as positive. I guess there could be instances of pneumonia that could be included which would obviously skew the numbers, but how many people get pneumonia in the summer time (it could be more than a handful but I have no idea). It’s just beyond frustrating that we have the “test test test” pathway in front of us only to find out that the test may actually be flawed at a very high level. It could render all of the data we thought we could use actually useless. It’s just another turd in this Rona punch bowl.

There are also people showing up at hospital ERs just to get tested.  These aren't people of means.  They are uninsured.  Most of them don't speak English.  When their tests come back "positive", they are being admitted.  Symptoms or not.

Color me surprised, we may get a new stimulus bill and a new round of payments/checks.

They were/are going to drop the weekly unemployment stuff from $600 to $100, and there is still talk of capping the checks for individuals making over $40,000.  No payroll tax cut either.  This will definitely help some people towards the bottom.

Why are they admitting positives before they know if they will need advanced care or not?

This one is 1/1000 tests. Truly nothing to see here.

I don't think that is fully correct. They do not specify how many tests were done using Thermo vs their other testing methods. The amount of affected results might only be a small percentage of their overall tests but might also be similar 2/3's for the Thermo test. We do know that millions of Thermo tests have been done nationwide. I would like to see the positive results broken down by testing type/company.  That could be given and could clear up a lot of this.

My 88 year old dad had a stroke almost a month ago and is doing OK in terms of stroke and functioning. Went to the hospital for 3 days and then rehab at his retirement community rehab/nursing center which was an ordeal. Was moved to several different rooms. Some without TVs so he was bored. Tested positive for covid 19 when he arrived so put in a semiprivate room with another positive patient. He had no symptoms throughout the ordeal. Tested negative over a week ago and moved again. Tested negative again and finally got to go home this afternoon. Happy camper! Back in his duplex at the retirement community with a sitter for a period of time. Now waiting to get better so he can get his dog back:

Not sure if the right thread to post (my brother works in multiple hospitals here in Austin) are there many people posting here that work in hospitals? Not just Austin. I am asking for a specific reason. I’m not sure I am allowed to post what I was told. Not trying to bait post or whatever (fuck I’m too old for that bs). Just want to know what the parameters are.

Wasn't there some thought that the MMR vaccine held some benefits against covid?

I  remember reading a story about 2 months ago about Hong Kong having a national policy that started in 1997 that not only children, but everyone of all ages got the MMR vaccine.   It was reported then that a city basically with 14-15 million people in the metro area had reported on 7 deaths, which if truly remarkable.   I haven't read anything else on it since then.

Why would the hospitals be asking for vaccination records  dating back from childhood from employees? To be more specific, employees that have worked there beyond ten years.

That sounds like somebody is putting together a paper/research project.

have you ever been to an ER? 3/4 of the fucks in there have a cold or earache. That is prior to any coronavirus where people are freaked the fuck out about something as dumb as dry mouth, a slight temperature or tickle in their throat.

This is something I’ve seen on Facebook from some idiot friends. If true, I’d love to see a link with any kind of supporting data. I know it’s not happening here in Corpus since hospital tests are averaging 150ish positive tests a day. Hospitalization numbers are only increasing by around 10 a day, so something doesn’t add up.

In other news, authorities are now saying that the country is doing very well.  'Except for the South and the West'...you know.....where half of the people live.

Texas' defense is doing very well, except for the pass defense.  Which is...you know...half of defense.

Looks like work being done in our own backyard!  As more time passes and more studies done, I think we are going to see many measures were unnecessary.

Lockdowns made little difference on COVID deaths according to newly published studies

Quote

Researchers from the University of Toronto and University of Texas found that whether a country was locked down or not was "not associated" with the Covid-19 death rate.

Instead, obesity rates and age played a large role, the study said.

Experts compared mortality rates and cases in 50 badly-hit countries up until May 1 and calculated that only 33 out of every million people had died from the virus.

Quote

The study found that imposing lockdown measures succeeded in stopping hospitals becoming overwhelmed, but it did not translate into a significant reduction in deaths.

"Government actions such as border closures, full lockdowns, and a high rate of Covid-19 testing were not associated with statistically significant reductions in the number of critical cases or overall mortality," the study, published in the Lancet online journal EClinicalMedicine, said.

It added: "Consistent with reported Covid-19 outcome data from Europe, the United States, and China, higher caseloads and overall mortality were associated with comorbidities such as obesity and advanced population age."

Quote

It added: "An increased scale of national testing was not associated with the number of critical cases, or deaths per million."

In a surprising finding from the researchers, the study found that nations with higher smoking rates had fewer deaths.

But some experts say the findings may not be accurate, including Professor Sir David Spiegelhalter of the University of Cambridge, who told the Daily Mail: "A large number of possible predictors are put into a model with only 50 observations, and then the resulting formulae are over-interpreted."

Yeah, that's one of the dumbest sentences that I've ever read. "Less people got the virus, less people required hospitalization, but about the same number would have died either way." Oh, ok.

I like how you ignored some other factors noted in the study that are inconvenient to you.

Quote

Reduced income dispersion reduced mortality (RR=0.88; 95%CI: 0.83–0.93) and the number of critical cases (RR=0.92; 95% CI: 0.87–0.97).

Quote

However, full lockdowns (RR=2.47: 95%CI: 1.08–5.64) and reduced country vulnerability to biological threats (i.e. high scores on the global health security scale for risk environment) (RR=1.55; 95%CI: 1.13–2.12) were significantly associated with increased patient recovery rates.

So, our shitty income distribution and shitty healthcare apparatus and system (and yes, ours is shitty when it comes to these things)......are a part of the problem when it comes to deaths, critical cases, and recovery.

How a disease affects a country is a complex thing, as countries and their people are a complex system.  An interesting thing we're learning (if folks like you will pay attention) is that our broken system, particularly when it comes to healthcare and our skyrocketing income inequality, is literally killing people.

We spend trillions on "national security!".....and utterly neglect the things that are actually killing us at [checks notes] a rate higher than we were dying during WWII.  But, you know, anything to avoid being called SOCIALIST!  Quadruple the spending on bombers!  Fight to the death to deny healthcare to people!  Those make total sense!

Of course a lockdown wouldn't impact death rate. We don't need a study to prove that. That article is unbelievably poorly written and completely mis-represents the study (which I just read). "The Evening Standard (also the London Evening Standard) is a local free daily newspaper, published Monday to Friday in tabloid format in London. Since 2009 it has been owned by Russian businessman Alexander Lebedev."

It's a Russian tabloid. Literally. Be better.

My uncle is a Dallas Fire Department captain, since they deal so much with paramedics, they routinely get  tested. However, they still have to go stand in line at a clinic, like everyone else. Three of his guys, I have known one of them personally, all his life sat in line for over an hour, the line wasn't moving, so they left. All three received letters that said they were COVID positive from the clinic, even though they were never tested. Between shit like that, and 90 false positives out of 144 tests, I don't think I could trust testing clinics in urban areas with long lines to get anything right on asymptomatic people. Sure, hospitalizations, and deaths are up, so there is actually proof that things are worse, but just how much worse?

Bwahaha. So many stories like this.

My dad and I were talking to someone we know who made some magnetic signs for us earlier this week and had just gotten off the phone with his realtor in Florida before we got there. Realtor Basically left because 3 hrs of line waiting and no test...only to get a phone call saying they were positive without a test.

Can’t confirm if realtor is rl s t8

This whole thing has evolved into biggest shit show we could ever imagine back in March.

Do the people who should have gotten a positive get a negative? Or is that otherwise caught?

The stories in these situations read like anyone’s test result would be fucked up if your test occurred after someone got out of line. So who knows? I mean they’ve got a list or whatever of 100 patients but only get 97 results back. You’d think they would notice something wrong. And then they just ignore it I guess.
