“Disease severity necessitating oxygen therapy or ventilatory support was infrequent in both waves and was lower as a proportion of total admission in the second wave than in the first.”
Also,
“Importantly, we have found no evidence of more severe disease having occurred in children and young people during the second wave, suggesting that infection with the B.1.1.7 variant does not result in an appreciably different clinical course to the original strain. These findings are in keeping with early national data. Severe acute respiratory COVID-19 remains an uncommon occurrence in children and young people.”

Which was always the point for the most part.  Everyone had a case of the vapors on the mandate removal, then had to walk back their doom and gloom "every death from here on out is on you" nonsense.  Most places you still see a large percentage of wearers, even in places where there is no requirement to wear to enter.  In places where sings are clearly identifying the requirement, everyone wears.

My guess is warmer weather and more and more people being outside where transmission is much more difficult is causing the decline, not the mask issues.

I saw that but it was a 3 month sample where they could more accurately see effect of the variant. At the end of the sample period, it was 70% of infections.

yeah, that's the big takeaway here.  States could have a mask mandate and it the citizens could be defying it left and right and still show an increase.  opposite is true with a no-mandate state where maybe the major cities are still mostly following masking and the cases could continue down as more and more folks are vaxxed.

There are issues with letting personal choice carry the day, from when does it become a public health risk to highest and best mask use is capturing the droplets coming out of the infected person, who may be asymptomatic or in denial about their health (its allergies/ a cold).  At a statewide level though it should be about information and empowering local municipalities to do as they need to in their own communities.  A blanket order from the state that applies to the entire state is way too broad, or should be if the localities could do and did do what they needed to to get any outbreaks under control.

Wait are folks saying that they think since the mask mandate being dropped that in Texas mask utilization is still as strong as it was?  Because while admittedly anecdotal...no fucking way.  I've been fully vaxxed for a while now so I sort of read the room on places.  If folks are wearing masks, I wear a mask...it's no sweat off my balls and not looking to make people uncomfortable, if they are not I don't (I trust the vaccine).  I have found myself more and more in the second situation.

And this is where the answer just sucks.  You shouldn't opine, if's ok to say "yea it's been a month, it's an interesting trend and one we wouldn't have necessarily expected so we need to look into it further to see what set of variables is driving the outcome to be different than what we might have expected to see."  You can even go on to say that you still believe in mask wearing blah blah blah to drive that point home.

100%. However (not you per se), why all the histrionics about the state lifting the mandate? That's why this conversation always feels like starting with a conclusion and picking facts to meet it: 1) California cases spike after it locks down in December ... it's just crazy anti-maskers defying the order; 2) Texas cases fall after the state mandate is lifted ... people are responsible and still wear masks. For me (and I think others) this is partly why it is hard to take many seriously when it comes to so-called "science." When the answer always is the answer regardless of the data one is not discussing facts or science but an agenda.

I've been pretty conservative throughout the pandemic but I'm starting to think there really is something to there being a certain segment of population that will fight any sense of normalcy until there is zero risk of getting sick (which was never the fucking point).

Yes the fourth wave of kids getting it and having the same disease course as before and not passing it to their vaccinated family members. Sounds terrifying.

He took his mask off to have some water.  It wasn't the scandal it was made out to be.  He has made a handful of communication missteps in the last 15 months.  I choose to look at the broader scientific narrative on Covid-19.  If what a national leader said 12 months ago, or walked back, was a career-ender...there's be nobody left in our government.  The catalog of errors made by people ranking above Fauci will be poured over and mocked by our great-grandchildren, and rightfully so.  All of these people failed us.  Some...more than others.

The Fauci All Star thing was silly.  He didn't do a thing wrong.  Regarding his role in all this, Fauci said it best himself.  He, and those like him, are just a piece of the puzzle.  Unfortunately, one side sees his word as the end-all-be-all, the other sees it as bullshit.

LOL.  This reminded me of another point that pissed me off recently.  Was at f'n Disney on ice with the family last week.  The arena is at like 20% capacity.  There is nobody in row in front or behind me.  Nearest person to me was probably 12 feet away.  They are selling beer so I have a beer.  And I have some damn usher (in the middle of the show) yell at me for not wearing a mask while my kid is in lap and beer in my free hand.  I point to my beer and she says I could only take mask off to sip the beer.    I mean give me a break.   First of all, I'm fully vaccinated and I'm sure many others were as well.  But in any event if you are at Disney on Ice during a pandemic I think it's fair to say you are accepting some risk of exposure.  So if you are going to profit by holding an event and selling food/concessions - maybe cool it with the mask nazi nonsense while seated in a socially distanced arena.

When the data are in, the excess number of  children and adolescents committing suicide likely far surpass those dying from COVID.  But more talk about ranch sizes please.

I just pull a Ted Stryker and throw the beer straight onto my mask.  Sure a lot of drips off me and onto my clothes, but enough seeps through...you get a decent buzz after enough tries.

But yeah, the Fauci hate reminds me of Kramer when he tells Jerry he thinks Mom 'n Pop stole his sneakers.  And yes, it all comes back to Seinfeld.

Karens going to Karen ... at least the usher at the Ranger games acknowledged my hands were full when he admonished me to put my mask back on ... I'm with you as shocking as it will be to many ... adults are capable of processing information and making their own unique risk-assessment and related decisions ... if one is attending  a sporting event or performance, I assume one has done the calculation and are will to accept that risk. And LOL at Fauci and water ...

Before I take a sip of a beverage in public...I often pull my mask down/to the side.  I think 90% of sane adults do the same thing.  Or after I take a sip, the mask be off for a couple of seconds before I get it back on.  He's 80 years old, he doesn't have the lightning quick reflexes to mask, remove, sip, mask, remove, sip, mask, remove, sip, mask with each gulp at warp speed.

Admittedly, I guess I don't get your point.  With 100 camera affixed on him, one caught him without a mask on between sips of his Dasani for a couple seconds outside without lots of people around?

I'm honestly just asking your point?   The guy took his mask off to sip some water.  Or wait, are you one of those Mackowiak disciples that didn't see the water bottle in his lap?  Like the blue dress/gold dress thing from a few years ago?  I had to give Matt some serious shit about that, two years before that photo...I have a photo of us at Nats game not too far from those seats with a caption of "Matt hammered in public.  Not seen:  the beer."  And the the beer is also in his cupholder."  He laughed, months later.

Does the photo prove that he once didn't have a mask on in public?  Absolutely and unequivocally.  I frequently encourage those in my life to mask up in public but understand that sometimes people take them off to sip beverages.  Just use your big kid words and express to me what exactly the photo proves/proved.  In 9 months, nobody has ever been able to explain it to me.

Stupid.. but anything Disney is real strict on masks, but I guess if you’re going to operate indoors or try to keep things going...you’ll do anything and everything necessary to not screw it up. I didn’t once feel threatened by covid after going to WDW a few weeks ago. I do wish we could take masks off when not standing in line for a ride and just walking around the parks or resorts. My wife told me today that Disney is now saying you can remove masks for pictures starting in 2 days so the trend may be heading that way in the upcoming weeks

Cheese-Because he wasn't "not wearing a mask."  He took it off to drink.  Everybody does.  It's physics.  If he had just not shown up with one, or had one and not worn it all game, or had one around his chin from innings 1st-8th, or dropped it on the ground and just left it there.  That'd be hypocritical.

I believe in safe sex.  But I don't always have my condom on with Kyle's mom.  I take it off for oral.  I'm a gentleman, she might not be able to eat latex.

But yeah, Fauci's routine has become tiresome.  But a 10-month old stock photo ain't exactly the strongest case against him.  10 months ago, I was stealing toilet paper from my campus office and googling whether or not I could drink the tito's hand sanitizer we had because I was too afraid of unmasked people at the liquor store.  We all get caught in the haze for ten seconds here and ther.e

And that 2-year old girl had it coming.  She kept breaking the "so mister...long story, short" promise to me on the connecting flight before that.  I needed to get some sleep on that damn flight!

But because I’m not a gotcha asshole, if you actually read the articles, you will see suicides have been on decline the past few years, but there was a big dip in April/May last year. All that being said, it seems like after the spike during 2017, 2018, 2019 has returned to the average.

lol, finally an expert has weighed in.

Look, i am 1/2 vaxxed and am ready to not have to wear one in any scenario and I am sure my kids are ready to not wear one at school.  it still just astounds me that people can say masks don't make a difference.  Does a cloth mask 110% stop a virus particle from existing the moment it is expelled from your cakehole?  No.  Does it limit how far the particles from your breath travel?  Yes.  mission accomplished, mask.  thank you for your service.  couple that with not packing in places like sardines and it's a moderately effective tool to slow the spread of this airborne virus.

In this time of give up, i agree with people that even requiring them at the Rangers game was stupid.  No one who bought a ticket to that game thought well I would be worried about spreading the virus sans mask, but I and everyone else will totally be safe since we are all wearing masks.  Still i am optimistic about getting deaths down to zero in the near future and let's get everyone vaxxed first before bemoaning about variants and potential variants.

That whole spin article is utter nonsense.  Funny how "unintentional injury" had a massive spike.  Further, if you read it, it's provisional data.

More COVID suicides than COVID deaths in children

Quote

Although complete national suicide data for 2020 likely won't be publicly available until 2022, Redfield's claim is supported by the increase in calls and emails witnessed by mental illness hotlines.
Between March and August the National Alliance on Mental Illness HelpLine reported a 65% increase in calls and emails. The Trevor Project which targets suicide prevention among LGBTQ youth saw double its usual call volume. The jump in helpline calls hadn't let up by the end of 2020: in November Crisis Text Line received 180,000 calls its highest volume ever, and an increase of 30,000 from the previous month. Over 90% of those were from people under 35.
