Are you saying it's 30% inside restaurants where people are sitting at tables and eating and drinking?  Are you suggesting that's too low, or too high?  Because I'd expect it to be 0% so maybe I'm not understanding your point?

No there will be 100+ people of all ages at door waiting to be seated without a single mask.   Wait staff still all masked.  But go into a grocery store and it was as good or better than it’s been in Houston.

Well shit Florida was like that last summer.

On a positive note, my neighborhood gas station is 90% no masks.

Also after today I can tell you if you want a real no mask experience, go to Planet K.

Wut?

The science is that masks do help prevent spread of airborne communicable diseases.  The science also is that we are not at herd immunity.  The science also is that until we reach herd immunity there is an ongoing risk that variants could develop that would be resistant to vaccines and antibodies.  But irrespective of the science, if you don't know whether those around you have  been vaccinated wear a fucking mask, because to do otherwise is inconsiderate at the least.

I love when lawyers talk about science

I have flown commercial a few times with the two kids since the oldest is now over two. I am thankful no flight attendant has asked me to mask the toddler. It’s not going to happen. We tried and he rips off the mask immediately, breaking it most times.

We’d be kicked off the flight.

Oh well hell, screw that.  I wouldn't go anywhere with a 100+ people waiting to be seated mask or no-mask even PRE-covid.  That right there's your problem.

We didn’t.  Just surprising to see.  Many of them old af too.  I understand many are on vacation and whatnot but man, figured people would at least try to maintain a bit at very tight gatherings.  Oh well, we are still masked for time being and look forward to when we will be able to not be.

Yeah. If there’s more than a 5-10 minute wait, that’s a big no, pandemic or not, I’m too old for that shit.

Quote
For the vaccinated, the risk of serious illness from the coronavirus — and spreading the virus to others — is vanishingly low.

There have been some cases of breakthrough infections even among those who have received the shot. But based on data posted on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, the risk is tiny — well below 1 percent. Consider the numbers:

  • Out of 87 million people vaccinated, 7,157 experienced breakthrough infections.
  • Of those, 498 were hospitalized and 88 died.
  • So, vaccinated people have a 0.0005 percent chance of hospitalization and a 0.0001 percent chance of dying from the coronavirus.

Those percentages are far lower than the risk of being hospitalized with or dying of the seasonal flu, some experts note. They also represent much less risk than people are willing to take on every day when they drive in their car or engage in a sport.

Re: California - people sometimes forget the West Coast experienced an initial wave of covid separate from the New York wave. The west coast locked down and ground the wave to a halt before it spread across the country. By the time the 3rd wave hit California, there was widespread Covid fatigue/opposition to virus suppression policies. Covid deaths skyrocketed around Thanksgiving/Christmas in California.

Note: India is just getting its second wave.

Remember when removing the mask mandate was unconscionable and vaccination or not you had to keep wearing a mask? Science!!!!

The KSU study, which was published on Apr. 20, determined that house flies are able to carry and transmit COVID. To reach that conclusion, the scientists exposed house flies to COVID in a lab and then tested them for infectivity. Environmental samples were also tested for infectivity after contact with the COVID-exposed flies. Samples were collected at various times after exposure. According to the researchers, they found that "house flies acquired and harbored infectious SARS-CoV-2 for up to 24 [hours] post-exposure."

In addition, the house flies were able to transmit COVID to the surrounding environment up to 24 hours after being exposed to the virus. Environmental samples that were touched by the exposed flies were contaminated with viral RNA, though those samples did not contain an infectious virus.

I didn’t think I was disagreeing with anything you’d posted.

By all means please tell me where I have misstated any of the science.

You haven’t misstated. Your statement needs qualifiers. You are overstating the current risk and apparently arguing for indefinite mask usage (or maybe just arguing to argue). Of course masks are effective against airborne illness. By midsummer pretty much everyone who wants the vaccine will have had the opportunity to be fully vaxed. We won’t hit 70% of the population, so we will see variants. The science shows vaccinated people  (and likely recovered cases) will be protected from significant illness in those cases.

tldr masks are going away (except planes)

We are agreeing. My commentary was not intended to suggest mask wearing should continue indefinitely. By the end of June in TX if you haven’t been vaccinated that’s on you. I’m just talking about right now.

We got vaccine out better than y’all anecdotally.

Sweet Lord 8lb 6oz Baby Jesus, no. Where did you get this impression?

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/us/covid-19-vaccine-doses.html#by-state

https://www.kff.org/other/state-indicator/covid-19-vaccines-delivered-and-administered/?currentTimeframe=0&sortModel=%7B%22colId%22:%22Location%22,%22sort%22:%22asc%22%7D

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/distributing/first-doses.html

Now, to be fair, it’s important to note that some of this is due to the fact that Texas has a higher percentage of children than anywhere but Utah, which impacts who is eligible. So the gap isn’t as wide as the raw numbers suggest. But saying Texas has outperformed CA on vaccinations is laughable.

And before the aggy brigade comes in hot because the idea that California did something better than Texas hurts their feelings, I’m not speaking in terms of overall pandemic response. I think there’s an interesting discussion to be had there with the benefit of a year plus of hindsight, though this particular thread has proven not to be the place for a good faith discussion. I’m just speaking to Wulaw’s comment on vaccinations above.

I said anecdotally. I had a friend that couldn’t get vaccinated in California and literally came to Texas and got vaccinated 38 hours after walking off the plane. My cousin (same age as me) waited 10 more days than I did to get his shot- and he was more concerned about it than I was and I wasn’t exactly hitting F5 non stop.
I fully expect CA to vaccinate way more people than us. I got the sense though we did a better job of taking care of our demand side than them.
as I said- anecdotal evidence.

Well there is a certain demographic that is more vaccine-hesitant and/or believes COVID is a hoax that's more represented in TX than in CA, could have something to do with our ability to meet demand

Rant time. Kid (4 years old) is sick with what I think is strep. Tried to get him an appointment to see his doctor yesterday. Doctor said we had to do a telemedicine visit today at 9:30 in order to get a swab test for strep. Fine. Got on the computer and the PA is asking us all these COVID questions. I said he had COVID back in January (positive test by the same pediatrician office we’re at) and she says that all signs are pointing to COVID again and he needs a Covid test and not a strep test.

I’m not a doctor but isn’t it nearly impossible to get this shit twice in 3 months? Additionally, I just want a fucking strep test. He doesn’t have COVID. Doctor’s office, especially pediatric doctors, are so hesitant to see any patients that are sick right now it’s infuriating. He won’t even be seen by a doctor and no one will look in his throat because he can’t go in the office. They’ll only give him a test for Covid and send us home. I’m going to have to go to an urgent care to get a strep test.

Fuck Covid.

I get the rage. We had to take our kid to emergency room because pediatrics office won’t see any kids except for routine scheduled appointments.

Surprisingly the hospital didn’t do Covid test on our kid when we got there.

Yay, Oregon is closed again.

https://www.kptv.com/news/gov-brown-orders-15-oregon-counties-into-extreme-risk-level-starting-friday/article_c332bb3a-a789-11eb-aa6e-275704f01c64.html

Last Friday, Brown said Oregon was experiencing a “fourth surge” of COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations were nearing 300 patients statewide.

Brown said new COVID-19 variants are widespread and if she doesn’t act now, hospital systems and healthcare workers will be stretched to their limits treating these severe cases.

Correct and especially as a kid. Doctors offices have become giant titty babies about all of this. Especially since, hopefully, most of their staff is immunized.

I barely test kids for Covid anymore unless I am highly suspicious and/or they’ve been exposed.

My daughter had to go through the same thing in Austin trying to get a strep test. It was ridiculous. I should’ve just had her come home.

I feel like doctors offices just want to tell you you have Covid. It’s the first thing they immediately test for, if you have even a single symptom overlap.

Strep test from urgent care was positive. Covid test from pediatrician was negative. Shocking I tell you.

Our daughter recently got sick and a bad rash on her throat. Took her to Urgent Care for strep test...rapid was negative. They suggest we get a Covid test and of course it's not until the next day and we have to drive across town to get it. 24 hours later we get the negative Covid result immediately followed by positive Strep on the culture. Fuck me what a waste of time.
