What -- other than the overarching opinion of the American public -- leads you to believe that this message board has a low opinion of Ohio?
Tell your mom to stop texting me. We're DONE. (And sorry I gave her the Clap.)

My wife left for the grocery store over an hour ago. She was gone for awhile and just as I was starting to wonder what’s up she FaceTimes me to ask me what Ralph Lauren clothes I want from the outlet. WTF.

It has been fun Surly. God bless and Godspeed.

Edit: she said the store was packed. F’ing perfect.

Ohio has had drive through beer places since I was a kid and I'm 59.

We are lagging behind in deaths to date.  On March 4th they had 107 and going into today we had 60.  So we've got that going for us.

Welcome! Please cancel any social plans you've got and stay home. In 2 weeks we will see the results of these efforts and undoubtedly wish we'd started isolating sooner.

Repeated for obvious truth.
Just shut it down, folks. Shut it down now. Only absolutely necessary travel (food, meds). And even then, plan it out and limit the hell out of it.

First, you have to learn how to wear them. You need a hermetic seal for them to be effective at stopping the virus. So bend them slightly at the nose. Second, turn on Pornhub and masturbate vigorously while watching your favorite vice. Third, wait for it. Fourth, wait for it. Fifth, now check to see if you were hit in the eye. If you were, you were a dumbass for not wearing eye protection and a dumbass for not knowing that standard masks don't provide a hermetic seal and thus are only partially effective against airborne viruses. They work mainly to block larger airborne particles. Now, wipe down your keyboard and chill the fuck out.

So tomorrow?

Some of the HEB curbsides are showing earliest slots on Saturday and next Sunday.

Those of you with kids in Austin, putting aside the lakes, there’s a shitload of little bodies of water all over the place where you can take them fishing, as long as it’s not posted “no fishing“.   We are near Shoal Creek, and lots of fish there.      North Lamar Central Market has their little ponds with some decent bass, catch-and-release of course.

Actually, I would never eat any of the fish in any of the creeks.

Again, Italy didn't start national at home shut down until March 9th.  It can't be overstated how vital that time difference is between us and them if we shut it down today.  Every damn day leads to massive containment and reduction of morbidity and deaths.

Since they have plans for how to return unopened bottles to the state for a refund I'm going with indefinite.

They will permit takeout food.

My 18 year old son has been all over the fucking place this week. He decided to take a trip to Fiesta Texas, played in the Comal baseball tournament, been to his girlfriend's house daily, attempted to make a day trip to N. Padre, crashed at his friend's house and has probably played in a Chuck E Cheese ball pit too.
My 67 year old mother in law just showed up a little while ago unannounced and it turns out her and my son made plans to go out for lunch and do a little shopping. I looked at my wife and she said "well, they already made plans."

Seriously, Gen Xers are having to manage parents who think they’re bulletproof and kids who just young and dumb and think they’re immune.

We’ve been consistently ignored our entire lives but our early diet of an apocalypse around every corner and our natural misanthropy has prepared us for this.

And as always -

This looks horrible, but we have a much greater population.  So maybe we still have some time?

that said, we still don’t have widely available testing.  So who knows

Everyone stay home first.  Just have to cut social contacts by 80%, not 100%.  Unless you're having notable difficulty breathing, or have other urgent symptoms, testing actually complicates things for the general population right now.

Two thoughts: These young folks who don’t know how to cook are about to learn a tough lesson if we shut down all restaurants. Our entire country is about to learn a tough lesson on relying on other countries to provide our goods and equipment.

I just got back from the Creekside HEB in The Woodlands and it was weird.  The store wasn't all that busy, but the shelves were more picked over than I've ever see including before hurricanes.  The paper aisle was completely empty.  The rice and beans aisle was pretty picked over and the fresh vegetables section was like a wasteland.  I couldn't find a single jalapeno or serrano.   I got the basics and some meat to stick in the freezer in case we are completely locked down for a few weeks.  We have plenty of food to last 4-6 weeks if need be, but the meals will begin to get weirder and weirder as we go along.  I have a bunch of venison that may have to get eaten without any sides if the stores aren't open.

Hopefully this forces us to bring a lot of our manufacturing back here.  How much of our prescription meds are made in other countries?  That doesn't really seem like a good idea, especially during times like this.

The issue is infection density more than raw #s. Per capita certainly doesn't capture it either. It's almost like the thing to look for is each country's densest areas of infection. How does the spread in the Seattle area compare to Milan?

plus we have 5.5X the population they do...and for the most part, we don't live on top of each other

Sign of the end times.  Two couch burning states.  One without a single confirmed case, the other ahead of everybody else in this country on the action curve.

I did lock all the doors. She refuses to carry a house key. And kept them locked until she got frustrated.

Our much greater population is offset by the difference in population density.  US 93 per sq mile.  Italy 531.  Follow the east and west coast population centers.  That's the best comparison to Italy by density.

SIAP. Feel this is encouraging for folks under 50? Lots of anecdotes and rumors over the last few days about rising numbers of fatalities under 50.

Yes this has floated around and seems to be pretty solid data to deaths thus far.  BUT that hasn't been the talking point as much as that people under 50 are being vented etc....that's much harder to see in any data and know is "people" a person or two, or a shitload.  Again lack of testing and data and unknowns creates a shitshow

Ok so is fortnite ok for preteens then?  I’ve said no to online community gaming so far, but they turn 11 this week. Fortnite might be a decent distraction. They are already getting a Switch and Mario odyssey as new content.
i do not have any gaming headsets if that impacts the playability of fortnite.

Life as we know it is about to end so I'd say fuck it and go full CoD Modern Warfare for them. Get them used to killing their fellow man online first so when they have to do it in the real world soon they pull the trigger with no hesitation.

JK. Maybe

I'm in charge of a Meetup group that meets on Wednesday nights in a bookstore. Our group is about 5-10 people, but the bookstore itself is pretty big. I'm not sure if I should cancel for the next few weeks or what. Do you think it's safe to go to friends' houses, etc if it's only a few people? Our local pub can hold about 50, at this point I'm thinking about just holing up inside my house with no contact whatsoever just because I'm not sure if we should be in contact with anybody at this point.

Thanks, just trying to plan out a strategy for the next few weeks or months or whatever. Fortunately I can work from home so that's not an issue.

Make it virtual, invite Surly.  It’ll be on pornhub before the day is done.
