On Cruise Ship Quarantined In Japan, Any New Cases Would Reset The Isolation Clock:

Quote: “People who are quarantined aboard the Diamond Princess in Japan have been wondering how long their isolation would last. On Friday, a health official gave an answer they might not like: the quarantine will be extended every time a new case of the Wuhan coronavirus is confirmed on the ship.

The coronavirus quarantine that has kept some 3,700 people aboard the cruise ship is currently set to expire on Feb. 19 – but that date would be reset if any new samples from people on the ship test positive for the virus, Dr. Michael Ryan, executive director of WHO's Health Emergencies Program, said Friday.

At least until they decide you have to die.

The ultimate form of healthcare.

We spend WAY too much on end of life care.  The patient must be kept producing cashflows at all cost!

Percentage increases keep dropping, but at some point all of that new testing infrastructure has got to kick in.

Maybe today was the day the new test facilities kicked in.   Note: may not be done reporting

34,374 cases

719 deaths

Bats and snakes are gone from the menu at Indonesia’s “scariest market” after officials ordered vendors to take the animals off the shelf to protect the nation from the fast-spreading coronavirus.

Sales of the animals at the wet market in Tomohon in North Sulawesi stopped last weekend after an order from the mayor, said the city’s health chief Isye Liuw. While pig sales are still allowed, vendors were encouraged to also stop trading in other livestock including wild boar, dogs, cats and rats, she said.

Countries are putting measures in place to stop the spread of the virus which has infected more than 24,000 people and claimed almost 500 lives, while putting 50 million people in several Chinese cities under lockdown.

From one of the math nerds on reddit.   He predicted today’s totals a few days ago:

  • Predicted = 34,506 cases, 721 fatalities
  • Reported = 34,375 cases, 719 fatalities

His comment from yesterday:

Quote

If testing capacity were limited, the gradient would be a (possibly noisy) constant and we would be seeing a linear rise in cases. However, what we are seeing is an exceptionally smooth quadratic rise, and what is more curious is that:

  • The public health interventions that were implemented in mid-January including use of face masks and increased personal hygiene;
  • The mass quarantine lock-down measures introduced in Wuhan City on January 23; and
  • The addition of two new hospitals that started operation on Tuesday 4th of February;

...have simply not dented or altered the published growth rate in any way whatsoever.

It remains perfectly smooth and quadratic and very hard to believe.

That definitely sucks but I’m not sure what other logical endpoint this situation could possibly have. If the quarantine clock starts getting reset multiple times, perhaps they could divide the ship into individually quarantined sections (I don’t know, floors maybe?) and then each area could have its own countdown.

Crazy about the ship quarantine... don't you have to restart the 14 day quarantine period every time there is a new case? On day 13 there might be 50 new folks who have new (and infectious) cases. It just doesn't actually make any sense to keep them all together. It's not like those 500 folks are all exposed just one time X days ago. And you can't really just say everyone has to stay in their rooms, right?

Called it.

If anyone likes technical articles:

https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(20)30183-5/fulltext

Findings

By Jan 2, 2020, 41 admitted hospital patients had been identified as having laboratory-confirmed 2019-nCoV infection. Most of the infected patients were men (30 [73%] of 41); less than half had underlying diseases (13 [32%]), including diabetes (eight [20%]), hypertension (six [15%]), and cardiovascular disease (six [15%]). Median age was 49·0 years (IQR 41·0–58·0). 27 (66%) of 41 patients had been exposed to Huanan seafood market. One family cluster was found. Common symptoms at onset of illness were fever (40 [98%] of 41 patients), cough (31 [76%]), and myalgia or fatigue (18 [44%]); less common symptoms were sputum production (11 [28%] of 39), headache (three [8%] of 38), haemoptysis (two [5%] of 39), and diarrhoea (one [3%] of 38). Dyspnoea developed in 22 (55%) of 40 patients (median time from illness onset to dyspnoea 8·0 days [IQR 5·0–13·0]). 26 (63%) of 41 patients had lymphopenia. All 41 patients had pneumonia with abnormal findings on chest CT. Complications included acute respiratory distress syndrome (12 [29%]), RNAaemia (six [15%]), acute cardiac injury (five [12%]) and secondary infection (four [10%]). 13 (32%) patients were admitted to an ICU and six (15%) died. Compared with non-ICU patients, ICU patients had higher plasma levels of IL2, IL7, IL10, GSCF, IP10, MCP1, MIP1A, and TNFα.

Treatment summary: Corticosteroids did not work. No antiviral treatment for coronavirus infection has been proven to be effective. In a historical control study, the combination of lopinavir and ritonavir among SARS-CoV patients was associated with substantial clinical benefit (fewer adverse clinical outcomes). Arabi and colleagues initiated a placebo-controlled trial of interferon beta-1b, lopinavir, and ritonavir among patients with MERS infection in Saudi Arabia. Preclinical evidence showed the potent efficacy of remdesivir (a broad-spectrum antiviral nucleotide prodrug) to treat MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV infections. As 2019-nCoV is an emerging virus, an effective treatment has not been developed for disease resulting from this virus. Since the combination of lopinavir and ritonavir was already available in the designated hospital, a randomised controlled trial has been initiated quickly to assess the efficacy and safety of combined use of lopinavir and ritonavir in patients hospitalised with 2019-nCoV infection.

I also think all airlines should shut down for 14 days. Maybe longer. Whatever it takes.

3700 people in close quarters where 61 of them are infected with what appears to be a highly contagious virus.  Unless you have some immunity, like the baby and the old drunk in the Andromeda Strain, you’re not getting off that ship

So they should just have a big orgy and develop immunity.

Info on the Beaumont suspected case

https://www.foxnews.com/health/man-tested-for-coronavirus-at-texas-hospital-after-experiencing-flu-like-symptoms

Quote

There is currently a patient under investigation for the 2019-nCoV (coronavirus) in Beaumont. The Beaumont Public Health Department is working closely with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Texas Department of State Health Services, along with other partners in monitoring this developing situation,” Beaumont Public Health officials said in a statement.

“Detailed testing per CDC guidelines has been initiated and has been expedited for confirmation. As more information becomes available, we will keep the public updated. Currently, there is no risk to the community.”

Quote

The patient, who was not identified, recently returned from a trip to China and went to the hospital on Tuesday night after experiencing “flu-like symptoms,” local news station 12 News reported. Symptoms of coronavirus can mimic those of the flu; signs of the novel virus have been reported to include fever, cough and shortness of breath.

The man is currently in isolation at the hospital while officials await his test results, according to 12 News.

some actual evidence that the China death numbers are juked. Japanese victim (in Wuhan) dies of "viral pneumonia" and technically not listed as coronavirus.

Yeah, I'm not sure why news outlets continue to use Chinese numbers to describe why the situation is getting better, worse or make any judgments.  They have been pretty much proven to be based on some algorithm, and not tied to actual cases.

Nice to see the numbers stay pretty stagnant outside of China. So far, it looks like we have been successful containing it. China is fucked, though.

I hope you’re right, but with the 14 day incubation period we might not know the full extent yet.

how long was the Beaumont guy Walking around before he went to the the hospital?  How many people did he pass it along to who still aren’t showing symptoms. How many people are they passing it long to. Hell, 28 days from now 1/5 of SE Texas might have it!

I just read up on the Spanish Flu.  I of course had heard if it, and knew it was a really bad strain of influenza.  However, I never had really looked at the facts of the pandemic.

Holy hell, that was horrific.  I suggest anyone who hasn't, to look into what happened at that time.

It may, or may not be relevant to what this current epidemic will become, but I feel it's still important to become aware of what could happen.

Better movie idea than Snowpiercer.  Could also be a plausible prequel to Water World
